A new engine has been fitted -- a 3.3-liter V6 -- and, consequently, the car formerly known as the ES 300 is now badged the ES 330. Besides the newfound power, Lexus' entry-level luxury sedan gains additional content upgrades for 2004, including a memory function for the adjustable pedals, improved navigation system features, power lumbar adjustment for the front-passenger seat, larger side airbags and a maintenance indicator light.

Pros:
  • Comprehensive array of luxury and convenience features, superb ride quality, smooth and silent V6, advanced safety technology, excellent reputation for reliability.
Cons:
  • Bland driving characteristics, many of the desired features and options are expensive, no split-folding rear seat.

  • Transmission shifts poorly in ES330 - 2004 Lexus ES 330
    By -

First the good things: This car has a superbly designed interior with real wood accents that is beautiful. It rides very smoothly, and is extremely quiet. The ML stereo and GPS navigation sytsem are incredible. However, this car is spoiled by a poorly shifting transmission. When punching the gas pedal, theres frequently a 1-1.5 second delay before the engine accelerates and the transmission engages. This unpredictability makes the car frustrating to drive in heavy traffic.

  • Bad Transmissions - 2004 Lexus ES 330

This cars computer has problems controlling the transmission. Car hesitates badly at low speed/gear. Lexus knows but wont acknowledge because they cant fix it. Ive sent 3 letters to HQ and they tell me the car is operating as designed (without even talking to the mechanics or my dealershi, Hmmm!!). City gas mileage is BAD also, about 15-17. Read all the complaints about the trans on this site, then buy something else!

  • My Third Lexus - 2004 Lexus ES 330

Had it since March, 2004 and purchased on basis of satisfaction with the previous GS300 and ES300.

  • acceleration very poor - 2004 Lexus ES 330
    By -

The new and "improved" computer controlled throttle is dangerous. The vehicle hesitates for one to two seconds whenever the accelerator is pressed; generally, when you need to move out or over, there is no pick up at all. Even the Lexus mechanics told me they would not drive it.

  • Transmission - 2004 Lexus ES 330

Very nice car except for transmission shifting characteristics at low speed acceleration and deceleration. Lexus needs to hire some new engine/throttle control/transmission integration engineers. Very anoying waiting for transmission to shift gears.

  • Not well-equipped - 2004 Lexus ES 330

The Lexus ES330 is a beautiful car, perhaps the most beautiful and aerodynamic exterior in its class. The interior is classy and tasteful too. A car worth admiring, but not necessarily worth purchasing. Compared with Acura TL 2004, this car seriously lacks some useful features.

  • Impressive but ...... - 2004 Lexus ES 330
    By -

The interior design is beautifully done. Sitting in it, you felt you probably spent more than $50K although most likely you spent significantly less than $40K. The exterior design, though, is quite dull - almost indistinguishable from a Camery. The acceleration is significantly improved compared to the 3.0L version, but still significantly deficient compared to SAAB 9-5 or Lincoln LS V8, both are only slightly more expensive. It is a very comfortable and very quiet car to ride, although driving it for long distance can put you into sleep qucikly. The fuel economy though, is a bit disappointment: I registered about 20 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on highway.

  • Good but had to trade it - 2004 Lexus ES 330

We bought the ES a little over a year ago and traded it over a week ago for a sportier car. The ES is an excellent sedan built for comfort and rolling isolation. I just had a change of taste for something sportier and more fun to drive.

  • Great Value - 2004 Lexus ES 330

Great car! Great value for the price. Gas mileage is very good for a car of its size. I dont think the new design is as sharp as the old version 300 but when you sit down in this car you know its a quaility automobile. Dont think I agree with the decisssion to change the body style in 2003 and in 04 change the version from 300 to 330. I would expect Lexus to have changed the number when the body style was change,

I may be a tough grader in comparison to others, especially since I basically love my new car. It is a great compromise between performance and luxury (I am coming off a Saab 9-5). I feel better that the 330 has more power, and that the transmission problem appears to be solved. It is the best overall car in its class.
