Overview & Reviews
For decades, Land Rover SUVs were known primarily for their utility and off-road prowess. During the 1980s, they became more luxurious, but their ability in the dirt has never been in question.
A prime example of this change was the Land Rover LR3, which replaced the aging Discovery. The old "Disco" was long on utility but a little shy on amenities. The LR3 offered a lot more style. Unfortunately, it still suffered from an underwhelming engine, quirky ergonomics and a poor reputation for reliability.
If all-terrain adventures are a frequent family activity and the thought of owning a pedigreed SUV appeals to you, it's hard to think of a better-suited vehicle for the task than a used Land Rover LR3. But if you'll be sticking primarily to pavement, other luxury SUVs like the Acura MDX or Lexus RX 350 will be better choices.
Most Recent Land Rover LR3 Models
The Land Rover LR3 was produced from 2005-'09. Originally, there were SE and HSE trim levels. The SE came standard with a 216-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 (we would avoid this), while the HSE got a 300-hp 4.4-liter V8. The V8 became standard on all LR3s for 2008. The HSE trim essentially became an option package in the final production year. Aside from the third-row seat becoming standard on the HSE for '06 and in the SE for '08, other changes were limited to additional standard features.
Though smaller than the Range Rover, Land Rover's midsize LR3 was still capable. V8 versions could tow up to 7,700 pounds and the LR3 was hard to beat off-road. All variants came standard with fully independent adjustable air suspension and a host of electronic off-road aids. Combined with a locking center differential, an optional electronic rear locker and the LR3's new Terrain Response system, this truck had the ability to climb boulders in a single bound.
At the same time, the LR3 also provided a useful interior as well. There was seating for seven adult passengers and both the second- and third-row seats folded flat to make cargo-hauling easier. The cabin design was a tad utilitarian and lacked the luxurious ambience of its competitors or its successor, the LR4. Another downside was the chaotic mess of little buttons spread upon the dash that could be confusing to use at a glance.
Other than being underpowered given its hefty curb weight, there were few complaints about the way the LR3 drove. It delivered the kind of tight, refined ride we expected from a luxury SUV and the steering provided excellent road feel and more feedback than many of its competitors. A tight turning circle and an effective power assist kept it nimble in parking lots.
In reviews, we were endlessly impressed with the Land Rover LR3's capabilities off-road and continuously surprised at how well it performed on road. However, besides the above concerns, there's also the matter of its thirst for fuel and poor record for reliability. As such, buying an out-of-warranty LR3 without being close friends with a Land Rover mechanic is not the wisest idea.

FamilyGuy LR3 driven daily - 2005 Land Rover LR3
By MidwestFamilyGuy - May 20 - 12:00 amWow I am impressed. I purchased the 2005 Land Rover LR3 SE V8 Java Black/Black Leather to replace our 1999 EB Expedition. The LR3 gets used as a daily driver and my family loves it! Striking good looks, plenty of power, soft supportive heated leather seats front and rear, etc.. This was a definite upgrade from our aging EB Expy. Have had zero issues with the LR3 since new and am considering replacing wifes Grand Cherokee Overland with the new Land Rover LR2. I was considering a new Tahoe ,Yukon,Expedition type vehicle but am glad I have something different I dont see everyone else driving around town. The Brits are back thanks to BMW and Ford completely re-working the entire line up.

My First New Land Rover In 30 Years - 2005 Land Rover LR3
By Kendall - April 22 - 12:36 pmI have owned at least 1 Land-Rover since 1974 when I bought a new Series III 88. I vowed never to buy another new L-R as a used LR,RR or Rover sedan was,for me,a better value. The high-tech LR3 changed that. This is the best one yet! At this time, it is even more high-tech than the new RR. The interior retains features from the Range Rover Classic that were so popular in the P5 and P6. The heated windscreen was first seen in the 67 6- cyl L-R 109. Computer integration of engine, drivetrain, suspension, etc. is amazing! EAS bags are now protected from the elements. Navigation system is fantastic compared to 98 RR. WELL WORTH THE NEW STICKER PRICE! Best value of all new RR & LR models!!!

I got a Lemon - 2005 Land Rover LR3
By Sunridgefarm - April 16 - 8:53 amI have had my LR3 for 8 months and it has already been in the shop for over 50 days. First a bunch of lights went on for no apparent reason, the shop had my car for over a week. Then I took it in for its 7500 mile check and the next day it started to surge forward then the engine would die. That took 3+ weeks to fix (new fuel tank). I got the car back and within 3 hrs. the engine light went on. Another 10 days and a new feul pump, the service manager took it home to test it and the light went back on. Finally got my car back and within 24 hours the check engine light is back on. I have had it and am filing a Lemon Law claim.

First Land Rover - 2005 Land Rover LR3
By dave and patti b - March 26 - 6:46 amWe have a 2003 E Mercedes; the Land Rover rides better. Other considerations: Lexus GX too showy for the beach and surfing .Thought of waiting for the Mercedes 2006 but our E has been in the dealership so often the salespeople donÂ’t even bother me anymore

King of the Road - 2006 Land Rover LR3
By upper midwest - March 21 - 11:23 amWas a Volvo wagon owner and follower but always admired Landrover. Was concerned about reliability, but after a bad dealership customer service experience at Volvo, I traded my vehicle in for a demo 2006 LR3. The ride is phenomenal. Im 61, 205 lbs and theres nothing like Landrover headroom, they are second to none. The seats are firm and supportive, and the instrumentation clear. An extremely technologically advanced vehicle as far as stereo, electronic gizmos i.e. rain sensor wipers, backup alarm, air suspension, ride dial and things Im still discovering! The lure was all servicing is complimentary during warranty. Cant wait for the Minnesota snows!

This is a REAL 4X4. - 2006 Land Rover LR3
By Stillwaters - March 16 - 10:36 amThe LR3 is a true 4X4 off road vehicle. Everything else is just a station wagon! I dont know where to begin. The ride on road is smooth, stable, and quiet. Off road, this thing is a "Mountain goat!" Couldnt get it stuck (I tried). The build quality is fantastic, tight, sound and poised; simple, yet elegant. If you have been thinking of buying the Lexus, Acura, or Mercedes, do yourself a huge favor and test drive the LR3. Those other cars are just station wagons is disguise (and boring to look at). The LR3 has personality, and rugged profile, and a cast iron constitution. It will take you anywhere you want to go and then carry you home safe (with a huge smile on your face)...

Better that my 2003 Range Rover - 2005 Land Rover LR3
By JBSSChicago - February 17 - 11:40 pmI was sad to give up my 2003 Range Rover, which I loved, but I needed the third row. I am shocked to say that I am enjoying the LR3 even more than the RR. Very peppy ride. So well thought out, esp. the seating design. Can easily fit three boosters across in the 2nd row (caused bloody knuckles in the RR) not to mention the HUGE 3rd row. The entire cabin is light filled and airy. The nav. system is definitely an improvement as is the in dash CD changer. So sporty, Im having a blast!

Excellent Vehicle - 2005 Land Rover LR3
By TN-LR3 - February 11 - 5:13 pmThe LR3 is a comfortable and powerful SUV. It does so many things well. It is filled with high tech edges and can go anywhere, any time in style and grace. It is not cheap, but if you compare it to its competitors, it is a far better option.

frustrated - 2005 Land Rover LR3
By Pamela - February 10 - 2:10 amThis by far is the best looking SUV in its size, but have not had it since Jan 21 due to electrical problems. It was in the shop 3 times before this last one, a total of 4 times in 6 months. It has been in the shop for a total of 67 days as of today. The service department cant figure it out. It goes into crash mode while driving down the freeway. This means hazards light up and wont turn off, locks constantly lock and unlock, all service lights on the dashboard light up and the suspension drops no matter how fast or slow you are going. They have replaced the CPU and harness, and check all circuits, it still has the same problem. I will sell it when I get it back.

Landrover LR3 HSE - 2007 Land Rover LR3
By steve - January 28 - 12:30 pmi have been enjoying this vehicle ever since i got it. It did well on our trip considering how many ride in it and handles well. If you are looking for a mid size SUV and still want cargo this is the car to get. The 3rd row seat is good to have in case you find yourself carrying more than expected. Of cousre it handles great off road.
