This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, Jaguar has reduced the base price of the X-Type 3.0 by almost $3,000. In other news, the Sport Package now includes 18-inch wheels and a 320-watt sound system. All X-Types get redesigned alloy wheels, as well as a revised front bumper and new foglights. The trunk lid has been reshaped and the push-button release for the trunk is now easier to operate.

Pros:
  • Comfortable highway ride, attractive styling inside and out, standard all-wheel drive, large trunk.
Cons:

  • OK but Reliability Issues a Concern - 2004 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

I did tons of research when I purchased this car. Bought for ridiculously cheap price. All and all drives nice, on par with other entry level luxury vehicles. Many issues have popped up including replacement of propshaft, faulty seat heater, grinding noise when braking, faulty sunroof (had to be fixed twice). For price I paid, and magnitude of repairs (small but annoying) I am not unhappy but if I had to do it again, I would probably have purchased the Volvo S-60 instead.

  • Looks good, reliability not there... - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

First 12 months: 3 breakdowns, three tows to dealership, car out of service 27 days. Horrible experience w/dealer on third time, wont go back. Plus side: good ride, decent power, looks sharp. Negatives: Automatic transmission terrible, poor fit and finish.

  • My mistake - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

My first Jaguar will be my last. New transmission at 2600m. Problem not identified after repeat visits to dealer. Whirring sound at low speeds annoying and alarming. Back seats cramped and headroom very limited. Gas mileage awful at average 17mpg, not what Jaguar wants you to believe. Trunk space about half of that in our 99 Acura TL. Mini spare tire did not improve my opinion of Jaguar. Great snow car! All wheel drive works well, sticky tires seem to claw their way through snow up to 18 inches. On icy hills we passed sliding SUVs BMWs and Mercedeses, as they were struggling to keep their footing. Passing reserve at higher speeds is good.

  • Jagau X-Type 3.0 - WARNING !!! - 2004 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

I bought a new 2002 X-type 3.0. Although I really enjoy driving this car it has been a maintenance nightmare. The car was delivered with three Continental and one Pirelli tires (should have tipped me off). Selected problems over the course of 30,000 miles: transmission seal has been replaced four times, transmission has been replaced, master computer has been replaced, cooling system main valve has been replaced (car had to be towed), brake pads replaced, trunk latch is intermittent. Spoke with jaguar repeatedly about this car – no help. STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST BUYING THIS CAR!!!

Certified used purchase, 16000.00 miles. Since then in the shop 5 times. Completely unreliable car. would discourage anyone prom purchasing. Also would not recommend Toyota Volvo Jagarf Warren, Ohio.

  • Good, but not Fantastic - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

The X-type looks great inside and out. To me it looks like a mini XJ. There are several items that I would like to point out to potential buyers. I have the 3.0 Liter but it is weak with hardly any torque. Gas mileage is horrible. Much less than the sticker says. I drive about 1/2 city 1/2 highway, and average only 17 MPG. Also, the car has alot of rattles, and the springs are very squeeky. The car rides very harsh, especially on dips or rough roads. Overall a decent car, but the lack of build quality really shows.

  • If only there was a money back guarantee - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

I bought the 3.0 Sport because it visually appealed to me and on test drive was smooth, fast and quiet. But after 2 months, the Sport package has proven too stiff, the gas mileage is worse than a SUV...consistently average 13-14 mpg. The drivers seat shakes. Buttons here and there squeak and the car just doesnt make itself a keeper. My old Lexus was light years smoother and more sophisticated than this Jag.

  • What a Mistake - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

When we walked into the showroom my husband and I fell in love with the JagX. It didnt take long to find out we had made a mistake. In the two years that we have owned this car it has been in the shop 25 times. Rattles and noises have been endless. Many have been fixed just to come back again. We put on our third set of tires at 55,000 miles. Remote locks have been fixed 4 times. Dashboard has popped up 4 times and currently rattling again. Electric windows broke, wheel covers fell off, seatbelts jammed, wind leak in windows, door jammed from outside, Grinding/rubbing noise when stopping. Rattles everywhere! Looks nice but grrrrr! I will do more investigating next time I buy.

  • Forget about the manual transmission - 2004 Jaguar X-Type
    By -

I had a 5 speed 2004 X type, the styling, suspension and handling are Ok. The engine not very economical, but OK, needing 91 octane. My 5 speed gear shifting action was Ok, but the clutch was awful, and after only 20K miles the rear differential was clunking badly. The dealership changed the clutch, and I got to see the old unit - a terrible design. Lots of plastic pieces also broke. Happy to get rid of the car - I now buy Japanese.
