This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, Jaguar has reduced the base price of the X-Type 3.0 by almost $3,000. In other news, the Sport Package now includes 18-inch wheels and a 320-watt sound system. All X-Types get redesigned alloy wheels, as well as a revised front bumper and new foglights. The trunk lid has been reshaped and the push-button release for the trunk is now easier to operate.

Pros:
  • Comfortable highway ride, attractive styling inside and out, standard all-wheel drive, large trunk.
Cons:

  • LEMON !! - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

My husband purchased this car for me for my 40th birthday. Not a day goes by without regret. It has been nothing short of disastrous. It has been in the shop 7 times for the same two problems: 1)grinding noise located in the right front 2) at about 35 mph the engine begins to vibrate - best description: feels like you are driving over a washboard. They actually REPLACED the engine and it still is not fixed. The interior is falling apart. The lining surrounding the front and back windows is peeling off. The visor mirrors are broken. The back seat seat belts have broken. The glove box will not close properly. Electrical side mirror adjustment switch is faulty. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!

I have the 2004 X Type for a year and a half now and cant wait for the lease to be up. Both key remotes have broken at different times. Both headlights have gone out at different times. The wipers stopped working and had to be serviced with a new motor. The car now started emmitting a whining noise from the rear and now has to go back. The seats are very small and uncomfortable. The heated seats and rear defroster shut off at 15 minte intervals which is annoying. Horrible sounding stereo. Cup holders are made it appears for cups of British tea rather than water bottles. Rear seat is cramped. Great AWD in snow. Ample HP with 3.0 engine but nothing exciting. Hood ornament is best feature!

  • A typical Ford - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

I am so unhappy with this car. It has had so many problems, I hate the fact of even getting in the car. The transmission went at 9,000 miles, the car has been at the dealer at least 7 times in one year. Thank goodness they offer a free loner car. I have had every color X type in my driveway The sad thing is they all seem to drive like my old ford tempo. Sad because they are a nice looking car. I am not usually one to complain, but I am going back to Acura when this lease is up.

Car is a 2002 x-type. Nice looking car. At 12000 miles the entire transmission had to be repaired. Further on down the road, the steering rack had to be replaced. The power locks, trunk latch, fuel door latch all had to be replaced. The clear coat paint was defective and begin developing air bubbles, had to be repainted. At a stop light once, the clamp for the hoses broke, all fluids drained, the car had to be towed. Engine does not always seem to have full power. Recently I was made aware that the Chasis on the 2.5 x-type is a ford tempo and on the 3.0 is a ford taurus.

Worst car I ever bought. Rides like a tin can. So many little problems- with lights, sunroof, stereo, wipers, etc. Passenger seat difficult to recline- not power. Wouldnt recommend this car to anyone!

  • Problems - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

Nothing but PROBLEMS. Had to have the gearshift replaced with only 8,000 miles. Had to have a new sunroof because of leaks at 12,000. Required complete transmission replacement at 20,000 miles. Needed four new tires at only 22,000 miles. Now at 25,000 miles I am told that I need a complete brake replacement. The locks freeze in cold weather and you could possibly be locked in or out. I will never buy another Jaguar X-type again.

  • Dont get stuck with one - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

Weve had our X-Type 3.0 Sport for about three years and it has been one of the sorriest cars we ever bought. In 60k miles, the car is on its fourth set of tires, fifth set of defrost vents, second set of visors and 3 three rims have been replaced, one because it had to be chiseled off (stuck $14/ea lug nuts caused it). It leaks oil, makes tons of various noises and gets horrible mileage. It can take off and turn good in the snow, but forget about stopping. 30 days after a $200 alignment from Jag and new tires on the front, the wear indicators on the inner edges are gone! Look at something out of Germany instead... trading this in on a Jetta diesel.

  • worst car and service we ever had - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

The clutch failed at 13k miles then the car was off the road for a faulty linkage and the clutch failed again at 25k miles. We were told the failure was due to normal wear not covered by warranty. We can’t believe a car of Jaguar’s prestige has an expected clutch life of 12 to 15k miles. We have driven sticks for 30 years and put between 35k and 115k miles on cars and have never had a clutch fail. This car has mainly highway mileage with little shifting. We find it nasty to be told that the damage is due to our driving habits. Two separate Jaguar dealers told us they see around 15 to 18k miles as the average life on an X-Type clutch and that they do not have experience with many manual cars.

  • X-Type Unreliable - 2004 Jaguar X-Type

From the time that I purchased this vehicle, it spent more time in the shop then I spent driving the vehicle. Unfortunately, I decided to purchase this vehicle instead of lease. The car has very little residual value now at 55,000 miles and I have had to put over $3000 into the vehicle in the last two months because of the poor quality of this vehicle. The vehicle is pretty to look at and yes it will turn heads, however, it has been a complete waste of money for me. I am a professional and do not have time to waste getting a vehicle repaired constantly.
