This Year's Model Updates:

For 2001, Hyundai comes to market with its very own sport-utility. The Santa Fe is based on a modified Sonata midsize car platform and is available with either front-wheel drive or full-time four-wheel drive with either a four-cylinder or V6 engine.

Pros:
  • Relatively inexpensive price, super warranty, roomy interior.
Cons:
  • Unproven reliability, unimpressive four-wheeling capability, underwhelming powertrain performance.

  • I will never purchase Hyundai again - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

I bought my 2001 Santa Fe used at a Toyota dealership, and within three weeks of purchase I had replaced almost 3000 worth of computer parts, as well as the spark plugs. The dealership was full of liars and crooks, but most importantly this car turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life. My transmission blew in late 2008 and cost me almost 4500 to fix, and I only fixed it because I still owe so much on the vehicle and the dealership did nothing to help me. As soon as I can get rid of this car, I will do so and I will never purchase another Hyundai again. Its a smooth ride and the seat is comfortable, but neither does me any good when the car almost never runs.

  • BEST SUV - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SUVS ON THE MARKET. IT HAS ONE OF THE HIGHEST GROUND CLEARANCE. THE ONLY THING THAT IS HIGHER IS A FORD EXPEDITION AND ONLY BY .5 INCHES. THIS IS ONE FUN SUV TO DRIVE.

  • Sante Fe is Excellent - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

We absolutely love our Sante Fe. We have had it over 6 mos. now and have had absolutely no problems with it and we still have people asking where did we get our car cause it is so cool looking. Its reliable, quiet, and probably the most underestimated SUV on the market.

  • Im satisfied - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

Its a bit of a putt-putt but it works for me. Acceleration is slowed, nothing like when new but it still works. I usually work close to home so most of my mileage is recreational. Thats cool. Handles really well in bad weather, takes a while to warm up but AWD pulls out of snow and ice with hardly a grunt. Ive seen this vehicle without AWD almost stuck. The extra height helps me to see more, and makes me feel safer, its a smaller but not the smallest sized SUV.

  • Unexpected perfection - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

Best balance of performance, quality and value. Previous SUV was a 92 Explorer XLT (great vehicle, still own it, just getting too old to be a daily driver) and the Santa Fe has performed as well as the Explorer did at the same tasks with additional comfort and economy - for less money!

  • Pleasure to drive - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

Very smooth comfortable ride. Distinctive styling. Very thoughtful design from the cup holders to the sunglass case. Great warrenty with freindly service department.

  • Worst Ever...Horrible! - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe
    By -

I have had my Santa Fe for almost 3 years now...and have had NOTHING but problems with it!! I have had to replace/repair so many things its not funny. It has ranged from electrical issues in the engine (multiple), the cruise control had to be disabled at one point or the transmission got stuck in 1st...now its a power steering issue. I am dumping this thing as soon as humanly possible. Hyundai was NO help at all of course, non-transferrable warranty and all that.

  • Best Ever Owned - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

Easily the best SUV on the market for the price. Have owned for 4+ years, no problems. Get 24+ MPG combined w/ V6. Solid build quality, easy to maintain. Hyundai builds to Lexus quality at 1/2 the price.

  • great machine - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe

Best auto I have owned in 35 years

  • If they made the stereo buttons bigger.. - 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe
    By -

Then I would have given this a 10 on the interior design. Those buttons are smaller than an ants nose, and the buttons work in a very non-intuitive way. Other than that and a couple of minor quibbles (see below), its great. This is the "other" car, with our main family vehicle being an Explorer. The Santa Fe is exactly what we wanted it to be.
