This Year's Model Updates:

Entering its second year of production, the Santa Fe gets four-wheel disc brakes as standard equipment as well as an optional upgraded stereo system. In May 2002, Hyundai responds to customer requests and makes a power sunroof optional for GLS and LX models. Besides that, all models benefit from midyear interior upgrades, among these larger air conditioning vents; a center stack-mounted clock; illumination for the power window buttons and glovebox; chrome accents; ISOFIX child-seat anchors for the outboard rear seating positions and an improved rear-seat recliner and folding mechanism. In September 2002, Hyundai announced that it had misstated the horsepower ratings for all of the models in its lineup -- the Santa Fe's 2.4-liter four-cylinder is now rated for 138 hp and its V6 is now at 173 hp. To compensate, the company is offering Hyundai owners (of 2000 models and newer) three options: 10 years of roadside assistance, 6-year/72,000-mile basic warranty coverage or 12-year/120,000-mile powertrain coverage.

Pros:
  • Relatively inexpensive price, super warranty, roomy interior.
Cons:
  • Unimpressive four-wheeling capability, underwhelming powertrain performance.

I will be trading in my 02 Santa fe to purchase a 06 Honda Element. This car has been so great I actually feel bad about trading it in. I had planned on driving it into the ground but decided to trade it in before it lost all value. Had a few bumps in begining with dealership- they never lubed on front wheel/brake and it wore out instantly. Dealer always fought over what was covered under warranty. After the first year things were great. So much room my friends were envious. At least they would have been if it didnt say HYUNDAI on the back. Cant shake that cheap stigma even though its a 22k car. Not sure I would ever buy another.

I had a Toyota Van before I got my Hyundai, I miss the room in the van, but once I got use to driving my Santa Fe, I found out, I had lots of room once the back seats are down. I like the 16 inch tires, makes a big difference when traveling. The one problem that I have is the gas miliage, its not quite the same as with the van, I get about 15 city and sometimes 23 on the open road.

  • GREAT CAR for the money.... - 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

I am only 16 years old and this was my first car and I bought a 2002 Hyundai sante fe and I bought it used at 60,000 miles and for about 6,200. I was hoping to get an suv because I have to drive about 2 hours each weekend during the winter through the snow and this car holds up really well, I dont have the all wheel drive version but even just the 2 wheel drive does really well. Its great in snow and rain. Another reason I got this car is because for an suv it has pretty good gas mileage. Its a good car pretty cheap and I love I highly recommend it. The only thing I could complain about is how when I go over 70 the wheel shakes but that has happened since I had the car. But great car!

Car is good-looking inside and out; friends look twice, then express surprise that its a Hyundai. Its highly reliable. In two years, only trouble has been a failed battery. Maintenance is inexpensive.

  • The Right Choice - 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

I looked at sedans, vans, compacts and SUVs for over 4 months while driving my miserable 1994 Ford Taurus with a rattling exhaust. I did not want to settle for just any new car. I wanted a 5 passenger, good in the snow, sharp and affordable vehicle. The Santa Fe had everything I was looking for, and some pleasant surprises. The electronics (lights, controls, when on and when off) compare and almost match the $65k+ Lexus SUV. EVERYONE I talk to about my car tells me how sharp it looks and what a surprise it is to see it in person. Saw dozens in Naples Florida area.

  • Love my SUV - 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

We love our Hyundai. We have had no major problems. Its fun to drive and comfortable. Tried to get a friend to look at one, she never did and ended up with a Ford Escape. The ride isnt as good as our Santa Fes and she paid way more for a smaller vehicle. We tried to tell her!

  • Love My New Santa Fe LX 4WD - 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

Just bought a Santa Fe LX 4WD with V6 engine. Its great to drive and the most comfortable of the small SUVs. My husband is 67" & weighs 250. This is the roomiest small SUV. Forester was the smallest. He couldnt drive it. Also drove Jeep Liberty, Saturn VUE (nice), & RAV4. I wanted a RAV4 or a Jeep, but this car beat the others out. Didnt try Honda CR-V (couldnt wait, which also ruled out Saturn, but we still liked the Santa Fe better). This car is loaded. There are virtually no options on the LX. Bbought for $550 over invoice. Gas mileage is OK (at least as good as my 95 Taurus wagon). I love this car. Plan to drive it 100K mi.

  • Hyundai Hyundai *so good to me* - 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

A+ on price, quality, warranty, and drive. Could not wait to get enough miles on it to take it on a road trip. Extremely impressed - Must have started a trend in my town. A friend has already bought one. Might write another review down the road - once trailer hitch is put on and I see how it performs towing a boat.... Wish me Luck! Would love an extra one .... :)

  • Proud owner of 2001 GLS and 2002 LX - 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

I drove the 2001 Santa Fe AWD GLS for 18 months and found it 100% reliable. Gas mileage was 18MPG highway. A bit less than I was hoping for. It was a solidly built vehicle. howver I would suggest adding a little round mirror to the drivers side to cover the blind spot inherent in most cars.
