Model Overview:

The Hyundai Elantra Touring was based on the European version of the fourth-generation Elantra sedan. Compared to the sedan of the same time period, the Elantra Touring hatchback wagon had a slightly longer wheelbase, sportier suspension tuning and different styling inside and out.

Where the Elantra Touring really stood out, however, was with its hauling abilities. The interior was roomy enough to seat four adults in comfort, and cargo volume was impressive. Unfortunately, the Touring never sold in big numbers, and Hyundai eventually replaced it with the newer Elantra GT. But if you need a used practical hauler with some driving spirit, the Elantra Touring merits a close look.

Used Hyundai Elantra Touring
Produced from 2009 through 2012, the Hyundai Elantra Touring was initially offered in a single well-equipped trim level. For 2010, Hyundai broke out the Touring into two trim levels, GLS and SE. Standard equipment on the GLS included air-conditioning, a tilt steering wheel, full power accessories, a 60/40 split-folding rear seat and a six-speaker sound system with a USB/iPod interface.

There was an optional package available for the GLS that we recommend looking for that included extra features including roof rails, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, upgraded upholstery and additional driver seat adjustments. Those features were standard on the SE, as well as 17-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, leather upholstery and heated front seats. Bluetooth was optional on both models.

The Elantra Touring was powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 138 horsepower and 137 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission was standard, and a four-speed automatic was optional.

Inside, there was plenty of room for all occupants and their gear. The Touring was more like a midsize wagon than a compact hatchback, as it offered 24 cubic feet behind the rear seats and a massive 65 cubes with them folded down. The latter is more than many competing hatchbacks or wagons. The Touring's cabin design came from Hyundai's European studios, but the result -- primarily in terms of the interior materials – was inferior to the U.S.-market Elantra sedan of the same time.

On the road, we found the Hyundai Elantra Touring performed reasonably well, hitting 60 mph in a little under 9 seconds. The Touring's ride was also smooth and stable, and the relatively quiet cabin made it a good highway cruiser.

If versatility and utility are at the top of your list, a used Hyundai Elantra Touring stands as a great choice among small hatchbacks or wagons, especially considering its feature content, large cargo capacity and overall drivability.

  • So Happy - 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring

Looked to take advantage of the C4C deal and needed a car for my wife that would get good gas mileage, not overly priced and room for my wife to put all her cleaning supplies in as she has a cleaning business. The elantra touring was perfect. Plenty of room, great road manners, quite and great warranty. She was driving a rodeo and at first missed the seat height of the SUV, but really loved the way the elantra touring drove. Every day she tells me how she loves her new car. Very very happy with the elantra touring.

  • Solid Compact Utility Vehicle - 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring

Im "stepping down" from a decade of owning cars costing $10k more. I bought this for the high reliability (Im expecting) and the value it represents. It may be hard to wrap your head around that fact that this is a compact car, with a midsize wheelbase and tremendous interior space. It IS fun to drive, though not sporty, but torquey, taut and surprisingly refined. Its not fast, but competent and capable around town and on the hiway. It has a "do anything" demeanor, but rides like a car, not an SUV. The biggest drawbacks being the 4 speed auto, oddly weighted steering and the 2L engine that makes only 140 Hp. But brakes are excellent, built quality high, and the interior well thought out.

  • Love it! - 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring

I am in love with this car! I was actually in the market for a new Santa Fe, but I wanted to keep my payment low. As an alternative (I have two big dogs so I needed a car that would suit them comfortably), the touring is perfect for my needs. Lots of interior space, especially with the back seats down. The car is sporty and fun to drive, economical (so far, Im averaging 25 mpg) and has nice eye appeal. I chose the chili pepper red (my first red car!) with the tan/taupe interior: really nice combo. The bluetooth and XM/Sirius system is great. Excellent safety features, unbeatable price, and a quiet ride. I would highly recommend this car to anyone.

  • Does everything better than a mid-sized SUV -- at far lower cost - 2011 Hyundai Elantra Touring
    By -

Does everything very well; truly great in several areas: driver/passenger comfort & cargo space w/compact exterior size, both low and hi-speed handling, ease of parking and maneuvering in heavy-traffic, braking distance, driver-visibility, fun-factor & winter-weather driveability (with 5-speed manual tranny), reliability, ease of service, and a long list of standard features. All that and an expectation of good long-term reliability for 19G including tax and title? Im pretty happy.

  • I hope Consumer Reports is correct - 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring

We bought this because CR is in love with the vehicle. The car (as the i-30 elsewhere in the world) has garnered all kinds of awards over the past 3 years. Compared to my Pontiac Vibe (Corolla), the ET has better fit and finish, excellent visibility, transmission, and is unbelievably quiet. The dash layout is simple and attractive, the Bluetooth is voice interactive and a must have, and the air conditioner is far superior to any other car I have ever seen. The ET is much more comfortable for rear passengers than the new Tucsan. If the reliability holds up as CR thinks it will, Ill be buying Korean products instead of Japanese from now on. Buying this car is a no brainer.

  • Another Sleeper from Hyundai!!!! - 2010 Hyundai Elantra Touring

This is my third Hyundai, and our most impressive Hyundai so far. The perfect little Euro-Style hauler for my wife and I, with just enough room for our dog in the back. I love the way it drives and handles, and for the price I dont think youll find a more feature packed ride. AC, Power Windows and Doors, ESC, Traction Control, ABS, Tire Pressure Monitor, XM Radio, MP3/IPOD plug-in on a base model GLS? It even tells me the outside temperature! Try getting that in any other vehicle! I used Edmunds.com TMV and competing dealership quotes to purchase for $1900 UNDER the invoice price. Best car buying experience of my life. Thanks Edmunds!

  • DONT BUY THIS CAR!!!!!!!!! - 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring
    By -

I just bought a manual one and since day one is having problems with first gear that most of the time doesnt engage. I have to start in 2nd gear even when I am completely parked. Took to the dealer and was told that I am the problem. I have always driven manual cars and NEVER had any problems. They dont want to fix it or they dont know how. Now I am stuck with a brand new car that doesnt work properly.

  • update - touring hatchback - 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring

Well heres an update to what I already have. Just took a little trip to cape cod. The car went 188.5 miles on 4.8 gals. of gas. Thats 39.2 miles per gal highway at 70 mph. I think it would have been higher if we did not get stuck in a 5 mile crawl to the Bourne bridge. In city seems to be about 31.5 miles per gal. The ride was very comfortable. No back pains like in other cars. The car handled great on uneven surface for repaving. I am loving this car more now than when I first got it. Good going Hyundai!

  • New and its a jem - 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring

Nearly perfect sporty commuter with room for the toys on the weekend. Fantastic value for the money. Gives 30 mpg in very mixed driving. Nothing seems cheap. Its very well done. Its the most car you can put around a 2000cc engine. Not a rocket ship, but more than enough go for a great daily driver.

  • Love this car! Probably last car Ill buy - 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring
    By -

Love the exterior, interior, displays, comfort, got to use the Clunker program on it. Only had 1 week, but it is so much fun to drive! Turns easily, parks easily, love the fold down rear seats and the cup holder arm rest in the back seats. Can carry my things to craft shows easily as well as friends when necessary. Great car for the money!
