Larger and more luxurious than the average midsize family sedan, the Hyundai Azera slots between the Sonata and Genesis sedans in Hyundai's lineup. It provides impressive interior room, features and power for a price that's thousands less than many competing vehicles. Buyers who have owned a domestic full-size sedan in the past and are looking for a new vehicle will want to check out the Hyundai Azera. It prioritizes comfort, luxury, safety and value, and is well-suited both for commuting and long-distance trips.
Current Hyundai Azera
The Azera comes in base and Limited trim levels. Both are powered by a 3.3-liter V6 engine that produces 293 horsepower. The only transmission offered is a six-speed automatic with manual shift control, which routes power to the front wheels.
Even the base Azera comes with keyless ignition/entry, blind-spot monitoring, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, powered and heated front seats, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a rearview camera, Hyundai's BlueLink emergency communications and a six-speaker audio system. The Limited adds xenon headlamps, power-folding mirrors, a power-adjustable steering wheel, driver memory settings, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, an upgraded surround-sound audio system and a navigation system. Limited buyers may add bigger wheels, a panoramic sunroof, rear parking sensors and window sunshades.
In reviews we've been impressed with the Hyundai Azera's overall competence. The potent V6 provides swift acceleration and good fuel economy, while the six-speed automatic provides smooth, if somewhat leisurely, shifts. The suspension is clearly tuned for optimal ride comfort, though handling doesn't suffer noticeably, as there's none of the floaty feeling one might associate with large sedans. Overall, the roomy Azera is quite impressive and is an excellent choice for a comfortable, upscale large sedan.
Used Hyundai Azera Models
The Hyundai Azera was redesigned for 2012. Compared to the first-generation Azera, it's considerably more stylish and boasts more power, as well as a higher-quality interior. Not much has changed since, though for its first two years this Azera came in only one, loaded trim level.
The first-generation Azera was produced from 2006-'11. It was generally regarded as a decent, well-rounded large sedan. There were a number of changes throughout the car's run, however, so we'd advise paying attention to specific years if you're considering one from this era. This Azera was offered in three trim levels: GLS, SE and Limited. The GLS and SE came pretty well equipped; the main options were leather seating and a premium sound system. The Limited had those features as standard, along with additional equipment. A navigation system was optional for the Limited in the car's latter years.
At its debut, the Azera GLS was powered by a 3.3-liter V6 that produced 234 hp and 226 pound-feet of torque. The Azera SE and Limited sported a 3.8-liter V6 that made 263 hp and 257 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission was standard on all Azeras.
As for changes, the GLS received more standard features in 2008 and essentially replaced the SE. Satellite radio, a navigation system and the surround-sound system also joined the 2008 features list. For 2009, the Azera's steering and suspension were revised, while different interior lighting, a new grille and an iPod/USB audio jack were welcome additions. For the final model year, Hyundai upped the power output to 260 hp and 233 lb-ft of torque for the GLS, and 283 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque for the Limited. The transmission was also upgraded to six speeds. Fuel economy was also up, so if you can swing a 2011 Azera, it's likely the pick of the litter.
In editorial reviews, we typically found the Azera's awkwardly tall seating position as one of its main liabilities. But overall we found much more praise-worthy attributes in the form of its excellent interior design and materials, refined and quiet ride, powerful V6, strong brakes, roomy backseat and value for the money.

It performs smoothly and is extremely responsive, It is not a sporty car in that its suspension is not tuned for sharp turns. It performs more along the lines of a touring car. Curiously men seem to appreciate the cars elegance, while most women are lukewarm to it initially. There is a lot of brand snobbery, yet I think anyone who experiences this vehicle should have no problem seeing that this car is on par with the Avalon, Passat, Lucerne, maxima, and ES330. Hopefully time will prove this to be one of the better cars on the road today.

outstanding car,competes with $40,000 car - 2006 Hyundai Azera
By bernard n edwards - January 7 - 4:13 pmHyundai has really managed to build us a car that i would compare with a $40,000 car. The ride is smooth, not floaty and tracks beautifully. Extremely quiet, gorgeous interior and exterior, extremely high quality. We just love the car and the new 3.8 litre engine. The Azera moves easily with no effort, smooth transmision, works good with the engine - lots of torque. Hyundai rules in my house.

Great car - 2006 Hyundai Azera

We chose the Azera after comparing it to Acura TL, Lexus ES 330, Buick Lecerne and Toyota Avalon. The Azera was equal to or superior to all of them and thousands of $ less expensive. Its a nicer car than the I30. We love the fit, finish and ride.

Inexpensive Luxury - 2006 Hyundai Azera
By masterling - January 4 - 3:37 pmI have been used to driving high end/expensive cars. But I took a leap of faith, ignored the Hundai logo and bought the Azera. I find that the ride is smooth and the interior is very comfortable. It is appointed nicely and appears to be well constructed. I have also gotten many complements from coworkers, customers and friends who have been in it. For the price it cannot be beat.

Unbelieveable - 2006 Hyundai Azera

If you failed to note the nameplate on the decklid, you might mistake the sumptuous interior for a Lexus or the Cadillac DTS - except that unlike the DTS the Azera uses better materials, has a 5 spd auto, instead of the antique 4 spd, and has folding rear seats ( a must have for us ). The 24 valve V6 outguns the DTS v8, too - in acceleration and top end and gets better MPG on reg. gas. Ride is buttersmooth, it handles well, and is whisper quiet. The Azera would ba a bargain at up to $10K more, and the warranty seals the deal. It gets 29-30 MPG at a steady 70MPH ( 22-23 in mixed driving ) in a Michigan December. This car is absolutely awesome!!!!

A bargain with great performance - 2006 Hyundai Azera
By emsmister - December 28 - 4:28 pmI have not been disappointed in any way since purchasing the car (a Limited with the Ultimate Package) ten months ago. The build quality was noticably higher than any American-made car I have ever owned and the feeling of solidity and the quiet ride are still very much in evidence. Routine maintenence has been all that has been required. Small wonder the Azera made it to Edmunds "Most Wanted" list for 2007. Both my wife and I feel this car handles, looks, and rides like a car costing many thousands of dollars more and intend to drive our black over gray Azera well past the 100,000 mile mark.

I wish I would have opted for the 07, because of some upgrades they made to audio controls and mirrors, but I got a great deal on the 06. Power, luxury, warranty--cant beat it for $24K out the door. Comparable to a BMW or Cadillac in my opinion.

Better car than my Lexus RX300 - 2006 Hyundai Azera
By James Padlock - December 23 - 2:19 pmThe azera really accelerates, and the shifts are seamless. This car has all the bells and whistles. It is extremely quiet at 75 mph. The outside paint finish is flawless. The seats are very comfortable, and the leather is of high quality. When going through turns, it really hunkers down and grabs the pavement, it feels like you are glued to the road. This car has great brakes with little pedal fade. The motor is so quiet that you have to listen really hard when you start it, to hear if it is running. The combination of headlights and driving lights really light up the road ahead. There has not been any warranty items that I have had to have the Dealer correct, this being a first for me.
