Overview & Reviews
Why are Honda vehicles so highly regarded by American drivers? Certainly, their excellent reputation for reliability and quality is a major factor. But it also has to do with the overall driving and owning experience. Read any Honda review and you'll likely notice common themes such as thoughtful design, a friendly nature, better-than-average fuel economy and attention to safety.
Japan-based Honda Motor Company was founded in 1948 by Soichiro Honda. The company got its start making motorbikes. Japan had been rendered cash poor and fuel-starved after World War II, and its citizens were hurting for an inexpensive, fuel-efficient mode of transportation. Honda's first motorcycles mated engines with bicycles to create a motorbike that was cheap to make and operate.
Honda's bikes quickly evolved into vehicles far more sophisticated than small engines stuck into bicycle frames. The manufacturer's 1949 D-Type could reach speeds of up to 50 mph, and offered front and rear suspension. The 1950s saw the launch of the successful Juno scooter, built to steal market share from the Vespa knockoffs that were popular in Japan at that time. In the latter part of that decade, Honda introduced the ultra-successful C100 Super Cub. The motorbike was remarkably easy to operate and featured a crossbar-free frame that made it popular with women. It went on to become the first Honda motorbike sold in the U.S. via then-new American Honda Co. in 1959.
By the early 1960s, Honda had built its first automobiles for the Japanese home market and entered Formula One racing. But it wasn't until 1970 that it exported its first car, the diminutive N600, to the U.S. The automaker initially had a hard time sparking interest among American buyers, but that all changed in 1973 with the introduction of the Civic. The car was larger than Honda's previous models even though it was still very petite compared to compact American cars. The Civic's high fuel efficiency (an important selling point given that decade's energy crisis) and affordability made it Honda's first American success story. By 1976, the Civic had been joined by the Accord, which quickly became a favorite with U.S. consumers as well.
By the 1980s, Honda's success and its reputation as a maker of well-built reliable cars and motorcycles continued to grow. It began building Accords in the U.S. in 1982 and by 1989 had earned the distinction of making America's most popular car. This was also the decade in which Honda created the Acura brand as a way to sell more upscale and luxurious vehicles. Throughout this decade and into the 1990s, the Civic and Accord were huge sellers and considered class benchmarks. Also during this time, Honda continued to innovate through such technologies as variable valve timing, aluminum body construction and improved safety features.
Today, Honda's lineup runs the gamut. Included are fuel-sipping hybrids, a spacious minivan, reliable family sedans, practical SUVs and even a pickup. Although the latest Civic and Accord aren't quite the benchmarks they once were for their respective classes, Honda's brand as a whole continues to be one of the most well respected in the industry, with millions of loyal and satisfied customers.

Owned mine for 8 years now!! - 1990 Honda Accord
By Matt H. - March 18 - 2:00 amThis 1990 Accord will probably be the most trouble free car I will ever own. I dont know how any car could get much better. Ive got 249,000 miles on it, and have had no major problems to speak of. The most major problems have been a water pump, and a radiator. Of course Ive gone through my share of regular maintenance things like cv joints, but thats it.

This Pilot was worth the wait.... - 2016 Honda Pilot
By Scott T. - March 17 - 10:22 pmI was driving a Toyota Highlander and loved that car, sorry Toyota but after driving the new Pilot I had to make the switch. I learned a lot about this SUV through Youtube.com, from the amateur reviewer to the professional I learned what made this SUV a future leader in this segment. I also read reviews on this website and feel that some of the reviewers had issues and I dont doubt that but dont make a decision based on a couple of unfortunate few. In the end it is a Honda and I have been an owner of an Acura in the past and was very impressed with the service that came with the vehicle.

Not Made Simple Anymore - 2000 Honda Odyssey
By PAN - March 17 - 2:00 amWhere to begin? Move up to the HO from a Nissan Quest so my wife could have a reliable van. What a mistake!! For the first 3 years, back to the dealer 3 times per year to fix power doors...got stuck at Disney World & on the highways (ignition switch problems)...replaced transmission @ 40K miles...trans stopped working again at 54K miles...looks like we will need a new trans again @ 61K. I better stop there, Im starting to get depressed. Must say though, Honda has tried, they know they have a mayor problem out there. Currently looking at the new Toyota!!

nice car, but overrated - 2000 Honda Civic
By rubykeeler - March 17 - 2:00 amthe civic is a nice car for a new driver or someone on on a budget. i only had one minor, easily fixed problem. the other cars drove away with nary and scratch and mine was trashed and had problems ever since. i just ended up selling the damn thing for a nice new acura rsx that had the luxury of power windows. also, the gas mileage is overrated. i commute to college on an all highway route, and never topped more than 280 miles per tank. i get more than that with my rsx. plus...whenever the gas got low, it would take a few more seconds to start the engine. lastly, right after the warranty expired, the cd player went to bust.

Love my Pilot!!! - 2003 Honda Pilot
By Susan Mary - March 17 - 2:00 amWhen the lease was up on my 98 Toyota 4Runner, I knew I wanted another SUV but one with more seats. The Honda Pilot was a perfect choice! It is not too much larger but it seems so much more spacious. The interior is designed with a lot of thought put into it. It is so quiet and such a very smooth ride. I bought the car on a Saturday and on Monday had the cross bars installed and was I surprised!! The whistling noise was horrible, the service men had installed them incorrectly. They switched them around and it was instantly quiet again. I recommend the car to everyone, especially my friends with kids. Thanks, Honda!
