Overview & Reviews
Why are Honda vehicles so highly regarded by American drivers? Certainly, their excellent reputation for reliability and quality is a major factor. But it also has to do with the overall driving and owning experience. Read any Honda review and you'll likely notice common themes such as thoughtful design, a friendly nature, better-than-average fuel economy and attention to safety.
Japan-based Honda Motor Company was founded in 1948 by Soichiro Honda. The company got its start making motorbikes. Japan had been rendered cash poor and fuel-starved after World War II, and its citizens were hurting for an inexpensive, fuel-efficient mode of transportation. Honda's first motorcycles mated engines with bicycles to create a motorbike that was cheap to make and operate.
Honda's bikes quickly evolved into vehicles far more sophisticated than small engines stuck into bicycle frames. The manufacturer's 1949 D-Type could reach speeds of up to 50 mph, and offered front and rear suspension. The 1950s saw the launch of the successful Juno scooter, built to steal market share from the Vespa knockoffs that were popular in Japan at that time. In the latter part of that decade, Honda introduced the ultra-successful C100 Super Cub. The motorbike was remarkably easy to operate and featured a crossbar-free frame that made it popular with women. It went on to become the first Honda motorbike sold in the U.S. via then-new American Honda Co. in 1959.
By the early 1960s, Honda had built its first automobiles for the Japanese home market and entered Formula One racing. But it wasn't until 1970 that it exported its first car, the diminutive N600, to the U.S. The automaker initially had a hard time sparking interest among American buyers, but that all changed in 1973 with the introduction of the Civic. The car was larger than Honda's previous models even though it was still very petite compared to compact American cars. The Civic's high fuel efficiency (an important selling point given that decade's energy crisis) and affordability made it Honda's first American success story. By 1976, the Civic had been joined by the Accord, which quickly became a favorite with U.S. consumers as well.
By the 1980s, Honda's success and its reputation as a maker of well-built reliable cars and motorcycles continued to grow. It began building Accords in the U.S. in 1982 and by 1989 had earned the distinction of making America's most popular car. This was also the decade in which Honda created the Acura brand as a way to sell more upscale and luxurious vehicles. Throughout this decade and into the 1990s, the Civic and Accord were huge sellers and considered class benchmarks. Also during this time, Honda continued to innovate through such technologies as variable valve timing, aluminum body construction and improved safety features.
Today, Honda's lineup runs the gamut. Included are fuel-sipping hybrids, a spacious minivan, reliable family sedans, practical SUVs and even a pickup. Although the latest Civic and Accord aren't quite the benchmarks they once were for their respective classes, Honda's brand as a whole continues to be one of the most well respected in the industry, with millions of loyal and satisfied customers.

Best Car In Its Class - 2002 Honda Accord
By SteveVFP - February 3 - 10:00 amI did more research before buying this car than any other. Put it side-by- side with the Chrysler Sebring, Toyota Camry, Chevy Monte Carlo, etc., and dollar for dollar you will not find a better vehicle. Sure, this is my 6th Honda, but I gave the other vehicles every opportunity to win me over, and none came close. The Camry may be a smoother ride, but it will cost you a few thousand extra to dress it up with what comes on the Accord.

Crummy Paint - 2005 Honda Accord
By Laffelady - February 3 - 6:46 amI am surprised to find out that the white Honda Accord that I purchased has only two coats of paint on it. It does not have the clear coat because it is white. A small pebble apparently hit the hood. Now it has to be painted. I have two places on the rear bumper that the paint scrapped off while the car was at the airport. A Honda dealer while I was on vacation told me about the paint. I have never had a car that has paint that just flakes off. What can I do? I bought this beast in Sept 2004. It is a 2005 model. I wish I had never even seen this car. It has a high pitch whine from the front. The first 100 mile trip I went on there was a constant flapping sound from toward the front.

The Energizer Honda - 1991 Honda Accord
By hondahappy - February 3 - 2:00 amOver 12yrs/239K &and still going strong. Needs painting, but no rust & interior like new except for couple of little things. Utterly dependable never had to do ANYTHING to the brakes until 134K! Keep oil/timing belt changed, reg. tune-ups & it just keeps going & going. Trouble w/drivers side window & power mirrors this year, but if thats the worst after these many miles, hey! Some parts understandably wear out: radiator & speed sensor @ 10yrs, another type of sensor (dont remember the name) that corrected the hot weather problem that others have referred to, ignition switch, but thats about it.

Inherited a Civic and Love it - 1993 Honda Civic
By Dex Diamonds - February 3 - 2:00 amI have had my Civic for almost a year. My mother bought it new in 1993 and growing up with it Ive learned to appreciate it. It has 87,000 miles on it and hasnt had a major problem yet. The acceleration is great for a 4 cylinder and it drives like a mini racer car. Im 18 and for my first car only a Benz would have been better. haha

Great buy - 2003 Honda Civic
By DjY887 - February 2 - 5:16 amI purchased mine in Aug 2004 with only 3400 miles on it. Excellent choice for my 40 mile highway commute. Im seeing a steady 38 mpg. Very happy to find a car w/o AC or electric windows..always a costly maintenance issue. Excellent build quality inside and out. Fun to drive. I gave up the utility of a Ford Ranger for the economy and reliability..absolutley no regrets. I would like to see the sedan get the HX package

Its more fun to drive than you can imagine and hugs the road beautifully. Theres nothing like shifting into 6th and sailing past everyone...especially when they think theyre actually going to overtake you! Great for rides in the hills and on curves. Amazingly low road noise and I never get tired of having the top down. Buy one today!
