Why are Honda vehicles so highly regarded by American drivers? Certainly, their excellent reputation for reliability and quality is a major factor. But it also has to do with the overall driving and owning experience. Read any Honda review and you'll likely notice common themes such as thoughtful design, a friendly nature, better-than-average fuel economy and attention to safety.

Japan-based Honda Motor Company was founded in 1948 by Soichiro Honda. The company got its start making motorbikes. Japan had been rendered cash poor and fuel-starved after World War II, and its citizens were hurting for an inexpensive, fuel-efficient mode of transportation. Honda's first motorcycles mated engines with bicycles to create a motorbike that was cheap to make and operate.

Honda's bikes quickly evolved into vehicles far more sophisticated than small engines stuck into bicycle frames. The manufacturer's 1949 D-Type could reach speeds of up to 50 mph, and offered front and rear suspension. The 1950s saw the launch of the successful Juno scooter, built to steal market share from the Vespa knockoffs that were popular in Japan at that time. In the latter part of that decade, Honda introduced the ultra-successful C100 Super Cub. The motorbike was remarkably easy to operate and featured a crossbar-free frame that made it popular with women. It went on to become the first Honda motorbike sold in the U.S. via then-new American Honda Co. in 1959.

By the early 1960s, Honda had built its first automobiles for the Japanese home market and entered Formula One racing. But it wasn't until 1970 that it exported its first car, the diminutive N600, to the U.S. The automaker initially had a hard time sparking interest among American buyers, but that all changed in 1973 with the introduction of the Civic. The car was larger than Honda's previous models even though it was still very petite compared to compact American cars. The Civic's high fuel efficiency (an important selling point given that decade's energy crisis) and affordability made it Honda's first American success story. By 1976, the Civic had been joined by the Accord, which quickly became a favorite with U.S. consumers as well.

By the 1980s, Honda's success and its reputation as a maker of well-built reliable cars and motorcycles continued to grow. It began building Accords in the U.S. in 1982 and by 1989 had earned the distinction of making America's most popular car. This was also the decade in which Honda created the Acura brand as a way to sell more upscale and luxurious vehicles. Throughout this decade and into the 1990s, the Civic and Accord were huge sellers and considered class benchmarks. Also during this time, Honda continued to innovate through such technologies as variable valve timing, aluminum body construction and improved safety features.

Today, Honda's lineup runs the gamut. Included are fuel-sipping hybrids, a spacious minivan, reliable family sedans, practical SUVs and even a pickup. Although the latest Civic and Accord aren't quite the benchmarks they once were for their respective classes, Honda's brand as a whole continues to be one of the most well respected in the industry, with millions of loyal and satisfied customers.

This car sings in the canyons and on the turns. Great cockpit, incredible handling, love the exterior styling, its apleasure to handwash. I find the vehicle wanting of exterior temperature display, and a better tonneau cover for the top when down.

  • Love My Honda - 2000 Honda CR-V

I had never owned a Honda. I was so pleased with the CR-V! I sold three of my friends on this vehicle. They all feel the same as I do. For my first taste of a SUV I was so impressed with the CR-V. The only drawback has been there isnt enough room for all the shopping trips we go on!

  • dependability in a honda accord - 2000 Honda Accord
    By -

my loyalty goes to honda, it has proven to be the most reliable car I have ever owned (besides the civic) a true value when considering dependability vs. $$$$ at 120K miles still runing strong , only had to replace battery, and rotors, still have original timing belt although recomended to replace @105K miles. excelent interior & exterior intergrety .reliability a great plus for single parents, students , and single females who dont own stock in repair shops and those who do not like to throw away money in cheep disposable cars and/or parts .

I bought this car after my Volvo S60 was totaled. It drives very well and has a lot of features for the money. Mine has XM radio in it plus the 6 CD in dash player, so I have fun with it on long trips. I havent found it to be as comfortable as my Volvo was, but its also a lot cheaper.

  • WOW! - 2004 Honda Accord

Almost bought an Acura TSX (dealer could not get the car and wanted MSRP - no discount, Honda dealer discounts). Drove a 5 speed EX and was very impressed with the acceleration of the 4 cyl. and smoothness of the 5 sp. Wanted leather and nav so I had to order the car. It was well worth the wait! To quote my 24 y.o. son, "The car is awesome!" This is luxury without the price!

  • Gotta get one!!!! - 2004 Honda Accord
    By -

I have had the car a little over a month and enjoy the heck out of it. The power with the V-6 is great, there is no regrets about getting the 6 speed manual transmission. I got the red with tan seats, I love the combo.

  • Great Car!!! - 2004 Honda Accord

Ive had the car for about a week now and I still grin every time I get into it. I was considering the Infiniti G35 coupe and am soooo glad that I didnt go for it. All the same features plus a few more for $8,000+ less. Great bargain for what you get. On top of that the buying experience was top notch, best Ive ever had. No hassling and in/out of the dealership in 35 minutes. Great job Honda!

  • Great road manners, excellent MPG - 2017 Honda CR V
    By -

I have driven 3200 miles of which 30% are highway. I am getting 30 mpg combined. On a freeway I was getting 35.7 mpg over a short distance. In the city it more like 27 mpg. The car handles great, very responsive turning, solid hold of the road, digital console is wonderful, I love it. Sound is decent, bluetooth work well. I ended up uninstalling Android Audio from my phone, as I found it is easier to use Google navigation on my phone than setting up the car touch screen. I wish the back seats could slide in and out, but they are ok where they are. Overall cant compain about anything really. Great SUV.
