Make Overview:

Why are Honda vehicles so highly regarded by American drivers? Certainly, their excellent reputation for reliability and quality is a major factor. But it also has to do with the overall driving and owning experience. Read any Honda review and you'll likely notice common themes such as thoughtful design, a friendly nature, better-than-average fuel economy and attention to safety.

Japan-based Honda Motor Company was founded in 1948 by Soichiro Honda. The company got its start making motorbikes. Japan had been rendered cash poor and fuel-starved after World War II, and its citizens were hurting for an inexpensive, fuel-efficient mode of transportation. Honda's first motorcycles mated engines with bicycles to create a motorbike that was cheap to make and operate.

Honda's bikes quickly evolved into vehicles far more sophisticated than small engines stuck into bicycle frames. The manufacturer's 1949 D-Type could reach speeds of up to 50 mph, and offered front and rear suspension. The 1950s saw the launch of the successful Juno scooter, built to steal market share from the Vespa knockoffs that were popular in Japan at that time. In the latter part of that decade, Honda introduced the ultra-successful C100 Super Cub. The motorbike was remarkably easy to operate and featured a crossbar-free frame that made it popular with women. It went on to become the first Honda motorbike sold in the U.S. via then-new American Honda Co. in 1959.

By the early 1960s, Honda had built its first automobiles for the Japanese home market and entered Formula One racing. But it wasn't until 1970 that it exported its first car, the diminutive N600, to the U.S. The automaker initially had a hard time sparking interest among American buyers, but that all changed in 1973 with the introduction of the Civic. The car was larger than Honda's previous models even though it was still very petite compared to compact American cars. The Civic's high fuel efficiency (an important selling point given that decade's energy crisis) and affordability made it Honda's first American success story. By 1976, the Civic had been joined by the Accord, which quickly became a favorite with U.S. consumers as well.

By the 1980s, Honda's success and its reputation as a maker of well-built reliable cars and motorcycles continued to grow. It began building Accords in the U.S. in 1982 and by 1989 had earned the distinction of making America's most popular car. This was also the decade in which Honda created the Acura brand as a way to sell more upscale and luxurious vehicles. Throughout this decade and into the 1990s, the Civic and Accord were huge sellers and considered class benchmarks. Also during this time, Honda continued to innovate through such technologies as variable valve timing, aluminum body construction and improved safety features.

Today, Honda's lineup runs the gamut. Included are fuel-sipping hybrids, a spacious minivan, reliable family sedans, practical SUVs and even a pickup. Although the latest Civic and Accord aren't quite the benchmarks they once were for their respective classes, Honda's brand as a whole continues to be one of the most well respected in the industry, with millions of loyal and satisfied customers.

I have never regretted the purchse, despite the price and the wait for delivery. Smooth drive, with a powerful engine. Much smoother than the Windstar I had before, with significantly better acceleration. The disappearing 3rd row gets udes even more that I expected. Great minivan.

  • Jekyll and Hyde - 2004 Honda S2000

This car is an absolute blast to drive, I test drove many different cars before deciding on the S2K. It is almost as much fun as my Triumph Speed Triple, but also lets me bring home a few groceries. Road noise and a harsh ride are a part of the character of a roadster thats more than offset by the S2000s precise handling and sweet drivetrain. Though some complain about torque, if you drive it like a motorcycle (rev like crazy), the V- Tech L4 provides more than adequate output in an open top, RWD roadster with Honda reliability and good resale value without one on every corner. Way to go Honda!!

  • Most Fun per Dollar! - 2004 Honda S2000

Total reliability, great handling and acceleration, and a reasonable price make this the sleeper deal of all deals for sports enthusiasts! Beats the pants off Boxsters, Z4s, etc.

  • Neat Rig - 2004 Honda Element

It is Fun to drive and to raise the seats is a snap. Everything is convienent and handy.Has a lot of power and will cruise comfortably at any speed.

  • Quality with a touch of luxury - 2001 Honda Accord
    By -

The build quality is outstanding--many American automobiles dont even come close. This is my second Honda; I expect the same dependability as the previous one I owned and have no doubt I will. The automobile is comfortable in both the front and back seats; I like the position and view from the drivers seat. Power windows, locks and mirrors add a level of luxury at a working mans price. The Honda Accord--Quality with a touch of luxury.

  • more than perfect! - 2004 Honda Civic

I wrecked my car back in March and I mean, a hard wreck. My car had extensive damage, but kept me completely safe. I didnt realize my life was in such great hands.

  • Great Car - 2003 Honda Accord

My wife and I purchased the Accord after test driving the Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, and the Volvo S-60. The Honda was far and away a much better car, with the reliablility of Honda engineering. We are so imensely happy with the Accord!

  • Honda Accord 4 cyl with navigation - 2004 Honda Accord
    By -

I have only owned my vehicle for a few days but I think that it was priced right with all of the options. I always keep the navigation system on and have even used it to get me around the L.A. area a few times in the past week. The only weak point I can see thus far is that the voice recognition controls could be improved. With the air conditioner going it sometimes doesnt get the command right. I bought my car from Sierra Honda in Monrovia, CA (near Pasadena, CA)and would highly recommend them. They were friendly, professional and a pleasure to do business with.

  • Best Honda Yet - 2004 Honda Accord
    By -

Exellent ride, probably due to the stiffer cariage. Eeverything on the dash is exactly where you want it. Our Son and Grandchildren live 300 miles away and we visit them as often as we can. This Honda is excellent on the Hiway and has more than enough power to pass a vehicle. As well the noise level in the car is extremly low. The comfort of the seats are probably one of the best reasons to purchase a new Honda.

  • good car - 2004 Honda Accord

    It is a good investment.
