Overview & Reviews
Why are Honda vehicles so highly regarded by American drivers? Certainly, their excellent reputation for reliability and quality is a major factor. But it also has to do with the overall driving and owning experience. Read any Honda review and you'll likely notice common themes such as thoughtful design, a friendly nature, better-than-average fuel economy and attention to safety.
Japan-based Honda Motor Company was founded in 1948 by Soichiro Honda. The company got its start making motorbikes. Japan had been rendered cash poor and fuel-starved after World War II, and its citizens were hurting for an inexpensive, fuel-efficient mode of transportation. Honda's first motorcycles mated engines with bicycles to create a motorbike that was cheap to make and operate.
Honda's bikes quickly evolved into vehicles far more sophisticated than small engines stuck into bicycle frames. The manufacturer's 1949 D-Type could reach speeds of up to 50 mph, and offered front and rear suspension. The 1950s saw the launch of the successful Juno scooter, built to steal market share from the Vespa knockoffs that were popular in Japan at that time. In the latter part of that decade, Honda introduced the ultra-successful C100 Super Cub. The motorbike was remarkably easy to operate and featured a crossbar-free frame that made it popular with women. It went on to become the first Honda motorbike sold in the U.S. via then-new American Honda Co. in 1959.
By the early 1960s, Honda had built its first automobiles for the Japanese home market and entered Formula One racing. But it wasn't until 1970 that it exported its first car, the diminutive N600, to the U.S. The automaker initially had a hard time sparking interest among American buyers, but that all changed in 1973 with the introduction of the Civic. The car was larger than Honda's previous models even though it was still very petite compared to compact American cars. The Civic's high fuel efficiency (an important selling point given that decade's energy crisis) and affordability made it Honda's first American success story. By 1976, the Civic had been joined by the Accord, which quickly became a favorite with U.S. consumers as well.
By the 1980s, Honda's success and its reputation as a maker of well-built reliable cars and motorcycles continued to grow. It began building Accords in the U.S. in 1982 and by 1989 had earned the distinction of making America's most popular car. This was also the decade in which Honda created the Acura brand as a way to sell more upscale and luxurious vehicles. Throughout this decade and into the 1990s, the Civic and Accord were huge sellers and considered class benchmarks. Also during this time, Honda continued to innovate through such technologies as variable valve timing, aluminum body construction and improved safety features.
Today, Honda's lineup runs the gamut. Included are fuel-sipping hybrids, a spacious minivan, reliable family sedans, practical SUVs and even a pickup. Although the latest Civic and Accord aren't quite the benchmarks they once were for their respective classes, Honda's brand as a whole continues to be one of the most well respected in the industry, with millions of loyal and satisfied customers.

Very Underrated - 1997 Honda Prelude
By freuger - June 8 - 11:57 pmI recently bought my Honda Prelude and it is by far the best car Ive ever owned. Stock Preludes are decent to look at, but when you stick a good looking body kit on, this car gleams. I have had so many compliments on this car that sometimes I literally have to excuse myself from them in leiu of having to leave! Stock, this engine pushes out 195hp and from a 4 banger! Just imagine what a super charger or turbo and some bolt ons could do to this, a turbo alone could probably push it into the 300hp range. Stock exhaust sounds great on this machine, and the limited slip differential tranny makes this car have the smoothest shifting in any manual Ive driven. You wont regret buying a Prelude

The Orange Scooter - 2007 Honda Fit
By Hans Hess - June 8 - 11:56 pmMy son purchased this car for me and I love it! I only wish that the hand gears were located in a different position on the steering wheel. This car is very comfortable and roomy. I love yard sales and purchase large gardening items... they fit! I feel very safe in this car. It has so many extras that you would normally pay more for. I just cant seem to say enough about my Honda Fit Sport. I call this car my "Orange Scooter" because I just "scoot" place to place. No hassle getting in or out of tight places, etc. Also, the color is great, does not show the dirt and easy to keep clean. Plus, it is a cheerful color. The sound system is fantastic. It brings joy to my ears. Love my Honda.

Overall an Excellent Vehicle - 2009 Honda Accord
By Myron Fisher - June 8 - 10:20 pmThis is absolutely one of the best cars Ive ever owned. Ride quality, quality of workmanship, handling, performance are all excellent. It is a fun car to drive. I can find nothing negative about this vehicle. The seats are very comfortable. This is an excellent vehicle for the price. Comparatively speaking, I consider it equal to Mercedes, Audis, and BMWs.

Upgrade to EX, its worth it - 2012 Honda Civic
By barba311 - June 8 - 10:52 amThis is a great car. Honda lives up to everything they stand for. Fuel economy, value, and its a really nice looking car! We upgraded to the EX model. Its less than $2,000 more but you get sunroof, bluetooth, and alloy wheels. Its definitely worth it for those 3 things.

Best Minivan - 2001 Honda Odyssey
By JD - June 7 - 4:06 pmWe bought new after owning a Windstar, and looking at Chrysler, Ford and Toyota. Transmission had problems at 600 miles! But the dealer and Honda were all over it, and we had the car back with a new transmission the next day. No problems since, not one. It handles better than any other minivan, no exceptions, and holds more, too. Weve taken 2-3 trips per year of 2000+ miles with two kids and a dog, and I wouldnt try that in any other vehicle but this one.

MuttLove - 2016 Honda HR-V
By Joan Urban - June 7 - 9:41 amLove the car, just what I was looking for for a personal v. working vehicle. Just a few caveats: (a) Im relatively short (53") but still have to be careful not to bump knees on steering column when getting in, after that, theres plenty of room, (b) theres precious little handy storage space for incidentals (pens, keys, etc.) in drivers cabin, (c) for some reason, rain drops seem to stay on windshield, washer/wipers dont sweep them away, going to try windexing them today and see if it continues to be problem.

Fantastic car! - 2001 Honda Civic
By Sonia - June 7 - 3:11 amMy boyfriend and I just bought this car a few months ago, and we LOVE it. We both have older cars (him, a 67 Chevy me, an 86 Volvo) that we love dearly, but this car takes the cake. Its very reliable, fun to drive, comfortable even for very tall people, and is very well designed, inside and out. We get about 33 mpg city and 40 highway, which is a huge money-saver. Parts are relatively inexpensive and easy to find, and the car is pretty easy to work on.
