This Year's Model Updates:

In typical Honda fashion, the Civic receives a number of minor changes this year in order to keep it fresh. For the coupe and sedan, there's new exterior styling, including restyling for the front and rear bumpers, hood, headlights and grille. Inside, the audio speakers have been upgraded, extra sound deadening material has been added and floor mats are now standard in the LX and EX. The LX trim has slightly bigger wheels this year (15 inches) and standard keyless entry. A new value package contains air conditioning, a CD player and a new center console. For the Si hatchback, there are new headlight and taillight designs, larger 16-inch wheels and flashier interior trim. Like the regular sedan, the Civic Hybrid has updated styling, standard floor mats and improved speakers. It also has a new interior console with an armrest, adjustable rear headrests and a manual driver-seat height adjuster. Finally, all 2004 Honda Civic sedans and coupes have a new seatbelt reminder system.

Pros:
  • Fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines, roomy interior, reputation for durability and quality, impressive crash test scores.
Cons:
  • Top-of-the-line models are pricey, antilock brakes not available on DX or LX.

I have been pleasantly surprized by this honda civic sedan ex, its acceleration has been better than I thought it would be and milage is better than 32mpg. It feels good inside and is not as noisy as some econo cars that I test drove. Overall better than a 30+mpg car should feel. I am very pleased.

My other half bought one of these, and while I have owned other Hondas too, I find newer Hondas to be terribly boring and uninspiring than they were 10 or 15 yrs ago. The Civic LX/auto engine is rather buzzy and tends to downshift a lot. Of course the MPG is great. Handling and steering feel are what I HATE about this car. The steering is not precise, and the suspension feels floaty to me, with lots of body lean. Feels like a 20 yr old Buick Century. Unimpressive braking too. If you want an appliance with the soul of a refrigerator on wheels, buy this. If you want a little more personality and spirited driving fun, shop elsewhere.

  • Couldnt think of a better first car. - 2004 Honda Civic

Display stopped working at 2000 miles; dealer had to get a new chip which reset my odometer. Besides that I have not encountered any mechanical or electrical problems. People working at the dealer were sleazy, didnt listen to me and werent in a rush to help. Gas needle has a mind of its own. Panels and doors fit together very well and obvious care taken toward fit and finish but doors still dont close with a confident thump. For the cars size the trunks massive. Drivers seat uncomfortable but not unbearable to be in for long trips. Back seat is nice and fairly roomy. Yawn inspiring acceleration. Ride is smooth, cabin noise minimal on highways.

In a years time and lots of highway travel, we have enjoyed our experience. However, a few things that buyers should know. One is the brake pads. We had to replace them at the 20k mile mark and recently I over heard an Accord owner discussing with a service manager their replacement also at 20k miles. Ive owned numerous makes and models. Ford brake pads lasted longer than this. And I drove that car harder and under more harsh conditions. The other complaint is road noise and handling. Its highway road noise shouldnt be over looked as well as its ability to handle like it should. Freeway ramps (clover-leaf style) you will have to slow down as others dont.

the engine turns off when the car is still, so when you are parallel parking on a hill the car stalls and rolls.

  • Fun to drive if SHE could steer it! - 2004 Honda Civic

At 511 the steering wheel and controls too far away from the driver. It is an uncomfortable and destracting reach to change the radio, heat, air and so on. Female member of home will not drive the car due to this.

This car is pretty fun to drive. The acceleration is decent, and the ride quality is smooth. Im not getting as good of a gas milage as I wanted, but its good enough(around 26 mpg). The exterior is candy for my eye, I love it. The interior looks clean and there is a lot of space in the front of the car. The rear is pretty tight but Ive had 5 people in the car a few times and no one complained so I guess its cozy back there. The build quality seems mediocre. The hood bends in and out a little bit if you press it.

  • GREAT CAR EXCEPT PAINT - 2004 Honda Civic
    By -

PICKED THIS CAR UP 3 WKS AGO AND FIRST TIME IT WAS WASHED WE NOTICED SLOPPY PAINT AROUND INTERIOR DOOR PANELS VISIBLE FROM INSIDE WHEN DOOR CLOSED. WITHIN TWO WEEKS A LIGHT MUSTARD COLOR BEGAN TO SHOW THRU THE WHITE PAINT ON FRONT LOWER "AIR DAM" PANEL. RETURNED TO DEALER WITH REQUEST FOR NEW CAR BUT THEY ONLY OFFERED TO REPAIR PAINT. NOT HAVING TOTAL FACTORY PAINT IS A BUMMER, ESPECIALLY ON A NEW HONDA. SERVICE MANAGER STATED PAINT PROBLEM - "ITS BECAUSE THEIR MAKING THEM SO FAST" (DEMAND AND ALL THAT). WOULD ADVISE NEW OWNERS TO INSPECT CAR CAREFULLY BEFORE TAKING FINAL DELIVERY. ALL OTHER ASPECTS OF CAR FINE.

  • Good car, but no longer the best - 2004 Honda Civic
    By -

I got this car mainly b/c I like the local Honda dealer so much. I retrospect, I wish Id gone with the higher fun factor that you get with the Mazda Protege5 or the new 3. I would also like the wagon utility that the Honda doesnt have. The Civic has good ergonomics and a quiet cabin. It is easy to work on and gets great gas mileage. The 04 facelift is also far more appealing than the earlier Civics. On the down side the car is painfully slow due in part to the gearing which seems more interested in fuel economy than performance. The seats are also a bit uncomfortable on the long haul. Overall, the Civic is a good car but the Mazdas are a lot more fun.
