Model Overview:

Since its launch in 1973, the Honda Civic has been one of the most popular compact cars sold in America. Its success can be attributed in large part to its consistently high level of quality inside and out and its long-standing reputation for reliability and low running costs. Impressive fuel economy and engaging performance have also played a role in making the Civic a top choice for many Americans.

The competition has largely caught up with Honda, though, and there are now many excellent small cars vying for your attention. Still, we continue to recommend the Civic due to its ergonomic interior layout, wide range of models and high resale value. For small-car shoppers in search of a solid used vehicle, the Honda Civic is certainly a smart choice, as its long production run and many variants make it easy to find what you want.

  • A step up from the last gen Si - 2012 Honda Civic
    By -

I totaled my 2009 Civic Si Sedan, I was T-Boned by a full-size SUV doing 40+ MPH, the Civic Si held up superbly, so I knew I wanted another one. So now I have had my 2012 Civic Si Sedan for a bit and can comment on it over the 09. Its a big step up, not only in looks, but in power, the torque is very noticeable and the ride is smoother. Not as sporty as the 09 but grippier than a regular civic, my Wife enjoys the ride more and its more comfortable on the road. The upholstery... the 09 has softer plush-ier fabric, but I actually prefer the new fabric due to pet hair and it seems easier to clean as well. I miss the higher redline of the 09, but the 12 feels less of a "chore" to drive.

  • Good car but other than few recall issues - 2007 Honda Civic
    By -

I bought it new from the dealer and there is a water boiling sound from the engine and dealer wont do shit even though there is recall on same issue with other year. Gas mileage and the seating comfort is very poor. Trans shutters in from 1st to 2nd if you press the pedel slow. Overall I like it but I do not buy another Honda due to their dont care customer service attitude.

  • Does it even have a check engine light? - 1998 Honda Civic
    By -

I really dont know, now that I think about it. I found a nice one-owner with 124K. After two years it has 175K and the only thing that has not been routine maintenance has been some rust thru the exhaust system. Thats it. Brakes/tires, fluids, filters, and spark plugs. Thats all Ive had to touch. Everything works. Ive owned a lot of high mileage cars b/c I prefer them for various reasons but this one acts half its age. It also beasted thru the Appalachian mountains loaded with myself and about 250lbs of military gear, so dont underestimate the power under the hood. And I average 35 mpg.

  • ShouldaBoughtAToyota - 2009 Honda Civic

I purchased this car Certified used with just under 35k miles. I thought I was getting a deal. Boy was I wrong. When people buy a hybrid theyre buying it for anything more than value. Now while I have yet to encounter many of the problems I have been reading on the wed, I am in fear for the future of this car. This car is advertised at 40/45 MPG. I have not even had the car a month and I am getting 33.4 and it keeps falling. I am about to have a dealer look at it but even she eluded that the issue will not get better. Worst purchase I ever made and I will be paying for it for 5 years!!

  • A different Si but still a great car - 2012 Honda Civic
    By -

I have to admit I was one of the naysayers. I have been leasing a 2008 Si Sedan and have enjoyed the car immensely. However, the stars aligned and I was presented with a deal that I couldnt resist. The new Si won be over in a couple of days. Its a bit more "mature", shall we say. Yes, it leans a bit more and it lacks the dramatic stratospheric top end but its still a great drive: planted and solid with a progressive and fluid driver/vehicle connection. The new mid range punch is delicious and the transmission is another gem from Honda. Ive even warmed up to the interior. Though the navigation system is a bit fussy most of the controls clear and straightforward.

  • exl w nav coupe - 2012 Honda Civic
    By -

I have had the exl nav coupe now for 6 weeks and about 1500 miles mostly city and averaged about 30 to 33 mpg. traded a 2010 coupe for this one. This car is quiter, more comfortable, and has more mid range torgue than the previous one. The leather is top notch and seats are great. The electronics from nav to i mid screen are easy to use and radio functions displayed are really nice. This car feels very luxurious. Its sporty, looks good, has cool electronic dash with lots of color and looks very upscale and space age. This was a good choice and i am very happy with this car.

  • all the car you need - 2004 Honda Civic
    By -

I managed to score a decent used one of these with 80k miles and drove it cross country last summer I have been enjoying it ever since. Yes, the interior is rather basic, and its a little buzzy at highway speeds... but in every other respect, a really solid car and great value. Nimble handling, slick shifter, quite peppy with the manual transmission and VTEC engine, reasonable stereo. Also consistently gets 35-40 mpg. Hard to go wrong!

  • Poor MPG - 2009 Honda Civic
    By -

At 31,000 miles, my average mpg went down to 24. and ive gotten used to the check IMA and check engine lights on. Acceleration is poor when the IMA battery is discharged - have to downshift to gain some power. Besides, its a good car.
