This Year's Model Updates:

Honda redesigns its cars and trucks every four to five years, whether they need it or not. For 2001, it's the Honda Civic's turn. Larger inside and out, with more powerful engines but a less sophisticated suspension, coupes and sedans return in familiar DX, LX and EX trims, while HX models come with two doors only. The GX Sedan is powered by natural gas. Unfortunately, the hatchback dies just when Americans are once again figuring out how useful they can be, and the sporty Si goes on hiatus for a year or two.

Pros:
  • Fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines, reputation for durability, neato CVT transmission, likely to retain a healthy chunk of original value, impressive crash-test scores.
Cons:
  • Si goes bye-bye, gotta get the EX or GX for ABS, vanilla-flavored sedan styling.

  • Major regrets - 2001 Honda Civic

I bought this car hoping for good gas mileage and reliability and have been disappointed on both counts. The front struts have been replaced once already and probably need to be replaced again, given that it sounds like a gunshot has been fired everytime I go over the smallest bump in the road. Interior is very cheap - the cover for the door handle falls off about every week and has no screw to keep it in place. It is basically an embarrassment to let anyone ride in this car. Gas mileage is average (25-30mpg), at best.

I got this car because I did a TON of research on safety, reliability and gas milage. I never bought a new car before and wanted to be sure I got the best car to drive my infant daughter around in. The first thing that aggravated me was that the fuel economy, which was a HUGE factor in my decision, was listed at 30city/38hwy - WHAT A LIE. I get about 25-28. I have brought it to two dealerships at least 4 times to ask them to find out why the milage is so low - they said they couldnt find anything wrong. Then I had several manufacturing defections, including a wire that opens the fuel hatch that had snapped. I cant wait to trade this in.

  • Most Overrated Car on the road! Really. - 2001 Honda Civic

Bought this car brand new for my daughters 16th birthday. Why, because I wanted the very best reliability for the money. It was a slam dunk according to "everyone". "What a long, strange trip its been"... Reliability issues, one after another. Failed auto Door locks. Failed power windows. Failed front and rear struts. Failed transmissions (if this has not happened to you yet, be patient it will. It is a manufacturing defect. Leaky/noisy sun roof Could have bought a Cavalier for this.

  • Tranny Woes - 2001 Honda Civic

Buyer beware. I have a 01 Honda Civic with 54,000 miles. Bought it new. It is certainly not an an abused car with about 8,000 yr average miles, far less than the standard 12-15,000 a year. I have maintained my car, had an extended warranty for 3 more years. Isnt it funny how cars are built to collapse right after the warranty! My trany just blew and I have to spend $2,500 out of my own pocket. This happened to another friend of mine at about the same amount of mileage.

  • Less than I expected from a Honda - 2001 Honda Civic

An acceptable car but lower quality than I expected from a Honda. For example: * Lots of wind/road noise * Poor exterior and interior design quality * Lousy turning radius * Poor climate control

  • Not A Very Reliable Car! - 2001 Honda Civic

I also bought the Civic for its reliability, but the overall experience has been somewhat of a nightmare. It all started when the struts went at about 65,000miles. Then at 85,000 miles alternator went. Then at 93,000 miles the switches to the windows went. The lining in the bck is coming apart over the rear passengers. The SRS light came on around 124,000 miles because of the seatbelt buckle. Now the big kicker the transmission is going at around 126,000 miles 5th gear pops out for no reason at all while driving. From what I read from other reviews, I will needing a new transmission. If that is the case the car is getting traded in!! I will never buy another Honda!

  • Civic in the Sun - 2001 Honda Civic

Great commuter car, not for a long trip. Quality has not been what I expect from Honda (Interior molding loose, drivers side light switch failure, very easily dented by parking lot mishaps). Seat adjustment limited.

  • I thought Honda was the best - 2001 Honda Civic

We thought the perfect car for my husband and then pass it on to my teenager, but we noticed it did not handle good and the suspension is horrible. very disappointed to find that there is a defective part in the transmission. Had to go back and forth to dealer to find out. The sensor light would go on and off. disappointed with my 2001.

  • Not what I expect from a Honda - 2001 Honda Civic

I owned a 1992 Accord EX sedan and loved it so when I was looking for a new car, I figured I couldnt go wrong with another one. This civic has been horrible. There is a real problem with the front end. Almost every 6 months, I need new struts oup front, Ive had the control arm replaced and the control arm bushings replaced. Honda has upped the warranty on the struts to 200,000km. I guess they recognize there is a front end problem with the 2001s but instead of fixing it, they are prepared to throw free parts at it for the time being. Free parts are nice but its a real headache to take a new car in for surgery every 6 months.

  • A car for those who dont really care. - 2001 Honda Civic

High quality appliance. Gets you from point A to Point B very reliably. About as much fun as an elevator ride.
