This Year's Model Updates:

Honda has completely redesigned the Civic for 2006. Highlights include a more powerful and fuel-efficient 1.8-liter engine, new exterior styling, an advanced interior design and more premium features. The company has also improved the gas-electric IMA system for the Civic Hybrid and restored the Civic Si trim's potency with a 197-horsepower engine and a sportier coupe body style. Midway through the year, Honda will also introduce a new "GX" trim level that runs on natural gas.

Pros:
  • Fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly engines, lots of standard safety equipment, roomy and refined interior, special Hybrid, GX and Si models.
Cons:
  • Polarizing dash design, top-of-the-line models are pricey.

  • Great, but could be better... - 2006 Honda Civic

Fun to drive manual - after break-in of touchy clutch. Cool looking, and very spacious interior. Very well-designed seats. Just took multi-state trip & can say this is the most comfortable seat Ive sat in for a bad back... very firm and well-bolstered. Attractive interior. Stereo initially sounded horrible, but got better after a few hours break-in... still nothing to write home about. A let-down in gas mileage, esp if you take it over 65 or so - but my last car was a VW TDI, so Im spoiled. (I average low 30s in mixed, very conservative driving).

  • Good but not great - 2006 Honda Civic

Owned the car for 2 months and 2500 miles. Overall, it is a good car. The 5 speed auto is smooth, willing to kickdown and will hold a gear to readline. Like the styling and the digital speedo. The fuel economy is only good in a combined downtown/highway commute. However, I have several issues with it. First, the front seats are awful. No lumbar support and odd seatback shape induces lower back pain after a half hours drive. Other issues, bouncy front-end on the highway, drive window switches set too far back on armrest, loud wind noise at 70+ in crosswinds, odd shaped door locks.

Great style, excellent handling and superb fuel economy. More problems then people told me Honda should have. Glove box replaced due to a rattle. Fuel cap went bad and made the check engine light come on. And now I believe the rf motor mount is failing. This car has more problems then the 99 Taurus I traded in for it.

I have had my new car since October, and it has been in the shop twice. The SBS light sensor had to be replaced (it stayed on) and the Recall on the gas petal taken care of. Plus when I plug in my cell phone, the fuses blow. The highest gas mileage is 28mpg highway. Now there is a racing engine sound when I am driving, so I am going to have to return it again... Would I buy it all over? NO!

Im 61" and heavy. I find the only complaint I have about comfort is the e-brake handle is exactly where my knee rests. It really bothers me, but shorter people will be fine. The interior layout is great, speedometer is easy to read and great location. The car could use an optional more powerful engine, instead of having to jump up to the SI. Great car.

  • Its good, but not great - 2006 Honda Civic

Not sure how I got so lucky, but my gas mileage has been ranging around 36- 38mpg this summer. I like the interior and dont have any problems with the digital speedo or the parking brake lever digging into my leg (Im only 58"). Inside of windshield does get dirtier than in previous cars Ive owned. Squeaks and rattles are MUCH more numerous than in my previous car, the Mazda Protege. Body roll and handling in general is inferior to the Mazda, but I can live with it. Factory Honda stereo is significantly better than the Mazda, and I like the aux input on the EX. Seat comfort on long trips could be better (little too firm for me).

  • So Far, So Good - 2006 Honda Civic

One of the first HCH cars sold in the Raleigh, NC area. So far, my highway mileage has been between 45-53 mpg; city 35-42 mpg (my commute is 99% freeway). Seating is quite comfortable and the cabin is fairly quiet. Engine noise is most pronounced during hard acceleration and there is some wind noise around the side mirrors. Acceleration is adequate and the CVT (transmission) is wonderfully smooth. Overall, much improved over the 2005 model. Me likey! A lot!

  • good commuter - 2006 Honda Civic

I bought the hybrid to save on gas because I commute 41 miles each way on the L.A. freeways. I have been pleased with the mileage (about 43-44 mpg) plus in California I have received my exemption stickers that allow me to use the carpool lanes alone. This saves me over 30 minutes each way daily. My auto insurance also dropped significantly. Probably owing more to the change in cars (previous car - Subaru WRX). While the car is definitely not built for the fun factor that the WRX was, it is comfortable (except on potholes), has major safety features and great ergonomics.

I drive approx. 30,000 - 35,000 miles per year. I purchased the car primarily for the gas mileage.

Purchased in April 2006. Drove it as a daily commuter until it was totaled in mid-July 2006. An awesome entry level sports coupe. Fun to drive in early morning light traffic (3:30 AM) but not during the San Fracisco Bay Area rush hour traffic (4PM~7PM). Post crash hindsight: Not a very practical daily commuter car being unable to take advantage of its capabilities in stop & go traffic. In other words, it becomes just like any other car on the road in heavy bumper- to-bumper traffic - something to keep in mind when you get caught up in the "emotional" process of buying a car. Replacement car is a 07 Scion tC, because it is a more practical choice for a daily commuter.
