I am going to be that guy.... - 1998 Honda Civic
By dxer1105 - January 17 - 10:07 pmThis car is reliable but.... I just strongly dislike it. I run into many small repairs on this cheaply built car. I hate manual windows. Defrosters are terrible. The car shakes if you drive faster than 65 mph. I had it for 18k from 102 to 120k. Iam about to sell it. Although, I only paid $1,500 for it.

1998 Honda Civic - 1998 Honda Civic
By arcticman1 - April 12 - 11:00 pmI have not been very happy with this car. From the paint peeling to the door handles breaking and wiper motors not working. Now at 155k, a deep knock in the engine (most likely a rod) Im done with Honda!

Still Going Strong - 1998 Honda Civic
By PSUEng - March 9 - 8:33 amI wrote a review on this car back in March 2008 after I purchased. I currently have 102,000 miles and this car is still cranking out the miles. Since last August(95,000 miles or so) I had a front passenger axle replaced due to CV boot/joint failure AC system serviced brake system serviced (but no new pads/rotors needed!) over the axle pipe on the exhaust replaced new spark plugs and my oil pan gasket was leaking. All this totaled about $800 parts/labor at my indy mechanic. I may have a front crank seal leaking and the clutch is going, but well see. It burns no oil and has yet to leave me stranded. Started every time this past winter in frigid outside temps. Fantastic little car.

Disappointment! - 1998 Honda Civic
By Dan - June 28 - 1:13 pmBought my automatic 98 civic hatchback in 99 because they had great reviews in terms of reliability. It was fun to drive and got great mileage. Looked good and was small and nimble. I did not wash often enough, but body held up well. I drove about 13000 miles/yr. Lousy stereo. My AC compressor and transmission both died when it was 5 yrs old. The interior felt cheap, rattled, and wore out quickly. Tail lights leaked water and got inside the spare tire area. My manifold cracked after 6 years and had to be replaced. Driver side manual window crank broke after 6 years. Engine lacked power, uphills it dogged.

Great Little Car, Cheap to Own - 1998 Honda Civic
By PSUEng - March 31 - 9:54 pmI bought my 98 EX last Sept. from my old roommate in college--he bought it new and at 79,300 miles, runs great. He maintained it very well and soon after I got it, the battery died (original), and the muffler rusted out. Other than that, no problems--AC is cold and heater is hot and everything works. I consistently get about 33 mpg highway and around 30-31 combined in my driving cycle. While its not a sports car, it is cheap to maintain and easy to work on. The engine will outlast the rest of it.

no more CVT - 1998 Honda Civic
By Jake - June 13 - 10:58 amhave this car for a while. if youre planning on buying an used HX, DO NOT buy one with CVT transmission. its like the worst tranny ive ever seen. it gives you no performance, car is slow, tranny belt slips and weird noise from the tranny as it ages. it also makes the car idle like crap especially when its cold. other than the transmission, its a very good car. engine still runs smooth (my car has 140k miles already), AC still blows cold, quiet interior, very good gas mileage (33mpg, all i do is city driving).

What happened Honda? - 1998 Honda Civic
By Love-A-Nissan - July 8 - 10:00 amMy fiancee owned the car for about two years before finally getting rid of it after the transmission went out with less than 50000 miles on it. If this had been just about any other import car the rapairs would have been covered under the powertrain warranty, but not on a Honda. The exhaust manifold had also cracked on the car about a year earlier. I have a friend with a 2000 Accord coupe that is aslo having transmission trouble. Where is that Honda quality I always hear about? Ill stick with Nissan. They build more exciting cars at a better value and I have never had aproblem with any of my Nissan vehicles.

Dont Understand Why All the Praise - 1998 Honda Civic
By vabiker - December 13 - 10:00 amI dont have too many positive things to say about this car. I bought the car to get a reliable, high mileage, AT car. The car has always gotten low mileage (25/31) in mixed driving. Never higher than 32mpg in 100% Interstate travel. The trunklid is a guillotine despite the installation of a special spoiler-supporting trunklid torsion element. The exterior paint is eggshell fragile. Alternator was warranty replaced at 10K miles. The 92 Saturn SL I owned for 10yrs. was a better car than this one. We bought the Honda for its glowing reputation, and based on my experience, I have to wonder how it was ever acquired...
