Make Overview:

As the market for import automotive brands became dramatically larger in the late 1980s, the Detroit automobile companies created their own import-style sales divisions. In 1989 General Motors introduced its Geo division, which became the most successful of these attempts before the division was discontinued in 1998.

Geo re-badged various GM cars made for world markets. Its most notable success came with the Geo Prizm, a version of the Toyota Corolla then being built cooperatively in a California assembly plant by Toyota and GM. The Geo Metro compact car began life as the Suzuki Swift, while the Geo Tracker sport-utility vehicle was derived from the Suzuki Sidekick. The Geo Spectrum sedan was an Isuzu I-Mark and the Geo Storm coupe was an Isuzu Impulse.

The experiment ended because the Geo division was unable to establish a stronger identity than the brands from which its products were taken. Moreover, GM quickly realized that Geo was simply funneling its brand loyalists into the import brands of other companies.

  • Built to last and last - 1995 Geo Tracker

I bought my GEO new back in 1995. My GEO has NEVER seen the inside of a mechanics shop. This car is very easy to maintain. Ive replaced the alternator in 2007, clutch cable in 2007, my water pump in 2008,Ive also replaced my hubs and rear shocks. All of which I didnt mind doing myself. Parts are very inexpensive and this engine / car is very easy to work on yourself. I currently have over 120k on it and it still runs very strong. Im still averaging 30+ MPG. With gas being so high Im gonna hold on to my GEO as long as I can...

This is a good car, if, youre fortunate enough not to get a lemon. It seems that the geo is an extremely good or extremely poor purchase. If you have one, heres some advice: Dont dog it, its all about using your gears, I climbed Mt. Ashland at 75 mph, since its a roller skate, the trick is momentum.

I bought my 3-cylinder, 5-speed new in "94. In 314,000 miles I have replaced the water pump, radiator and starter. Thats it. The motor is as tight as a drum. Mo leaks or burning. I"m still regularly getting around 42 MPG. Its nothing more than an upholstered tin can, but it sure keeps running.

  • No care that is more reliable - 1996 Geo Metro
    By -

I bought this car brand new in 96, I drove this car 45 miles to work and back every day for years. The car logged over 260,000 miles before I gave it to my son. I even rolled the car on its side in a ditch and never had to do any major repaors other than body work. The engine and trans worked like they did they day I bought even after 260,000 miles. Amazing, great gas milage, great reliabilty, great car. If you can find one of these cars that have been taken care of I would recomend it.

  • Love it!!!!!!! - 1994 Geo Metro

This little geo was handed down to me from my parents who bought it new in 94. this car is very reliable as long as you keep up on the maintenance. Its on it 3rd engine, 1st one the oil drain plug didnt get screwed all the way in and feel out dumping all the oil, 2nd one was a used engine and wasnt good to start with, and now the 3rd is running good and has been for over 60,000 miles. engines are very tough for their weight (you can pick up the whole thing by yourself). and if you want more power just search for swift performance as its really a Suzuki Swift.

  • love it - 1993 Geo Tracker

I have owned a 89 sidekick 4wd and this 93 tracker. I have loved them both! from May until Sep I take the top off (in MN) and drive. only complaint is it can be a handful in strong winds or on winter roads so you must be vigilant. Is most at home on a two lane road or around town cruising. The highway is a little fast for it. My girls love to go for rides with dad with the top down so it gives us good bonding time. I would buy another without reservation and find it a better buy then the Jeep Wrangler and comes without all the problems. It is so easy to work on and simple in its design that it has few problems to deal with.

  • gas prices bad but not with this car - 1994 Geo Metro
    By -

This car is a great car if you want to get good gas mileage. Mine is a 3 speed automatic and is very easy to work on. If you dont know much about cars this is a good learning tool. pros: great heater, it heats up fast/ good gas mileage/can go on the freeway and get up to speed fast enough. Cons: makes a lot of noise due to lack of insulation/cheap interior/oil leaks/battery drainage/rust in the crevasses of the car/not a very safe car as far as getting hit by another vehicle.

  • Great Car - 1996 Geo Prizm

A great car for a beginner, not a lot of power but gets you from here to there safely. Since it was my first car ive beaten it, and it has lasted. I yank up the e-brake, do burnouts, and power shift it and it still runs the same with no problems. Very fun car to mess around in for very cheap. I got the car for 1700 with 137,000 miles on it and now im up to 153000. In this time, ive had 2 flat tires which happens to all cars, an oxygen sensor, and a new belt.
