As the market for import automotive brands became dramatically larger in the late 1980s, the Detroit automobile companies created their own import-style sales divisions. In 1989 General Motors introduced its Geo division, which became the most successful of these attempts before the division was discontinued in 1998.

Geo re-badged various GM cars made for world markets. Its most notable success came with the Geo Prizm, a version of the Toyota Corolla then being built cooperatively in a California assembly plant by Toyota and GM. The Geo Metro compact car began life as the Suzuki Swift, while the Geo Tracker sport-utility vehicle was derived from the Suzuki Sidekick. The Geo Spectrum sedan was an Isuzu I-Mark and the Geo Storm coupe was an Isuzu Impulse.

The experiment ended because the Geo division was unable to establish a stronger identity than the brands from which its products were taken. Moreover, GM quickly realized that Geo was simply funneling its brand loyalists into the import brands of other companies.

  • Ole Reliable - 1992 Geo Prizm

In case you didnt know, this is basically a Toytoa Corolla. This is a fine car, and Ive enjoyed many miles with it. Ive driven from NC to FL to NV to VA and lots of places in between, without a hitch. I do all my own maintanence, and it is very easy to work on, and the parts arent expensive.

  • Personal Problems - 1995 Geo Prizm
    By -

Replaced the starter once, but I am also now on my second alternator. I sure hope this is not an ongoing issue but only a problem with the first replacement. I would really like to run this thing into the ground to squeeze every penny out of it. Its sort of ironic that the only parts that fail on this car are the American onces. Engine runs perfect, but the electrical system and the interior are falling apart.

  • 4 Wheeled Wonder! - 1995 Geo Tracker
    By -

This vehicle is a disappointment when it comes to riding comfortably on the highway, too much interior niose, is overly affected by wind, has too small a gas tank and didnt get the gas mileage one wouldve thought. However, its four-wheel drive capabilities are awesome as long as it has clearance. Engine had no problems starting in -20 degree weather. Very reliable and definitely takes a beating(but at the risk of denting).Consistantly got 28mpg in city and hwy. This is fun in the snow and on beach with the top down, but dont buy this vehicle for your everyday, highway vehicle.

  • boy is this great - 1997 Geo Tracker

I have had my tracker for almost six years. I know it is getting old but if i sell it, theres no newer tracker to buy. I just gotta keep it.

  • Small, Light, Plastic, but Rock Solid! - 1995 Geo Tracker

There is a lot not to like about this vehicle. Its terrible on the highways, the wind noise is overpowering and the wind will bat it around the road. There is a lot of exposed metal, plastic, and a lack of "finish" inside the car. The gas mileage sucks for the size of the engine, and the range is pitiful. But you forget all of this as a poor student when the thing gets you through high school and college without fail. Never left me stranded, unbelievably reliable even when I just got rid of it (about a month ago).

  • very happy - 1991 Geo Prizm

I have owned my car for 8 11 years now and I am very pleased. No major problems and very good gas milage. Wish it was more stylish.

  • good but bad - 1995 Geo Tracker
    By -

it gives a horrendous ride. its very uncomfortable. its very vulnerable to winds and feels like a wind could take you across the road. the fuel economy isnt bad. the convertible top is a pain to take on and off. however the reliabiltiy is very good.

  • Dont Count on This Vehicle - 1997 Geo Tracker

Many problems with this vehicle. Even though it was covered by the warranty for the first 50,000 miles I had the radio go out, the a/c quit working, the cassette player broke and they refused to fix it, due to the daytime running headlights-the headlights were constantly being replaced. Right after 50,000 miles, the starter and ignition went out and also the transmission.

  • Good runner if you dont mind the rust!!! - 1991 Geo Storm
    By -

This little car is a mixed bag. Worked well mechanically and was quite reliable. Unfortunately it is prone to rusting..BIg Time.. A flaw that seems to be in all Geos once theyre a few years old.. so take note!..I wish someone had told me.
