As the market for import automotive brands became dramatically larger in the late 1980s, the Detroit automobile companies created their own import-style sales divisions. In 1989 General Motors introduced its Geo division, which became the most successful of these attempts before the division was discontinued in 1998.

Geo re-badged various GM cars made for world markets. Its most notable success came with the Geo Prizm, a version of the Toyota Corolla then being built cooperatively in a California assembly plant by Toyota and GM. The Geo Metro compact car began life as the Suzuki Swift, while the Geo Tracker sport-utility vehicle was derived from the Suzuki Sidekick. The Geo Spectrum sedan was an Isuzu I-Mark and the Geo Storm coupe was an Isuzu Impulse.

The experiment ended because the Geo division was unable to establish a stronger identity than the brands from which its products were taken. Moreover, GM quickly realized that Geo was simply funneling its brand loyalists into the import brands of other companies.

  I just passed 185,000 miles and its still going strong. Its a great car to drive down to the beach. Just drop the top and cruise. Its especially nice considering it only takes me 3 bucks in gas to get to the beach and back. Great little mini sports car.

  This is the second Prizm I have owned. Traded the first at 184,000 miles. The 97 has 186,000 miles and just wont quit. The salesman at the dealership was right "Youll get sick of looking at it before you need to replace it". Most reliable, fuel efficient vehicle I have ever owned. Fun to Drive!

  No problems here - 1994 Geo Prizm

  I bought this car used at 64,000 miles (after owning a Geo Storm and never having any trouble with that vehicle at 120,000 miles) and have had to do nothing but routine maintenance. Im now at 125,000 and could not ask for a more reliable car. This vehicle really holds up over the long term with little maintenance and a lot of reliability.

  Good car - 1993 Geo Prizm

  This was a great car, very reliable and took two rear-endings and one drivers side impact accident in five years and kept going strong. I pushed it with the number of miles I put on for my work, but with normal maintenance it performed very well.

  Great little car. It was the first "new" car I ever bought with 52K miles on it. Ive put 68K on it since the purchase. The handling, creature comforts and overall performance has been outstanding. Negatively speaking, I did have to replace a master cylinder twice, at 65K and 112K, and at 115K the starter and alternator both went out within 2 months of each other, so I decided to have the timing belt replaced when the alternator was replaced. The repair costs were not very expensive. All in all, I am very pleased with this car and plan on driving it for a few more years.

  Tracker was very reliable, fun to drive in college. Never had any problems besides normal maintenance. Kept it for probably a year or two longer than I would have if I didnt like it so much.

  Most reliable, smooth drive, sporty feel (with 5 speed manual). Cant get anything better for the price.
