Midsize SUVs are some of the best-selling vehicles on the market, as families and singles alike seek out their just-right compromise of space and maneuverability. The GMC Envoy had been among the eligible candidates in this segment since 1998. It was completely redesigned for 2002, and the result was additional size, power and refinement, though the Envoy was still thoroughly eclipsed by its rivals. Its last year of production was 2009.

A platform twin to the Chevy TrailBlazer (as well as Buick, Oldsmobile and Saab models), GMC's Envoy was a traditional body-on-frame SUV offered in two-wheel-drive (2WD) and four-wheel-drive (4WD) configurations. Apart from styling, there were subtle differences between it and the Chevy, however. For example, the Envoy offered an optional rear air suspension (which provided a more isolating ride and balanced out heavy loads), which the TrailBlazer didn't. Engine choices included an inline-6 (with 270-291 horsepower, depending on the year) and on some models, a 5.3-liter V8 (with 300-302 hp, depending on the year).

Among traditional midsize SUVs, the GMC Envoy got lost in the pack. It had all the right features to compete in this segment, as well as a comfortable ride and decent power. But it was sullied by sloppy handing and below-average interior build and materials quality. Furthermore, although the Envoy's safety features looked up to date on paper, the SUV actually performed poorly in crash tests. For some used car shoppers, the Envoy may still be an appealing choice, but most would be better served by its more refined rivals.

Most Recent GMC Envoy Models
The second-generation Envoy debuted for 2002 and didn't change much throughout its 8-year model run. Initially, it was offered only with the 270-hp (increased to 275 hp for '03) inline-6 engine in two body styles: regular five-passenger and extended-wheelbase Envoy XL, which provided seven-passenger seating and considerably more cargo capacity. A 5.3-liter, 300-hp V8 became available on the Envoy XL in 2003 and on the regular Envoy (as part of the Denali trim) for '05. That year also saw head curtain airbags replace the front side bags. A more powerful (291-hp) inline-6 came for '06, as did newly standard stability control and cruise control. The Envoy XL was discontinued for 2007 and the Envoy itself was gone after '09.

The most common trim levels were the base SLE and leather-lined SLT; however, in '05 the ultra-plush Denali trim debuted, bringing standard V8 power, a unique grille treatment, more sound insulation and heated seats.

An unusual model called the GMC Envoy XUV was offered in 2004 and '05. The XUV was an Envoy XL stripped of its third-row seat and fitted with a retractable roof over its cargo bay. The result was a vehicle that could function as both a true SUV and a pickup. In practice, though, the multitalented but odd-looking Envoy XUV proved to be a tough sell to consumers.

The first-generation GMC Envoy was sold from 1998-2000 (there was no '01 model). It was little more than an upscale version of the midsize GMC Jimmy, which debuted in '95, and was equipped much like today's Denali. The extra amount of features didn't mask its aged chassis and old-tech V6, however, and the two together delivered a mushy ride quality and lackluster acceleration at highway speeds. Other complaints included numb steering, a large turning radius and poor brake feel. Although these early Envoys are inexpensive to buy on the used market, subpar reliability keeps us from recommending them, even to buyers interested in an old-school, truck-based SUV.

  Lost the Suburban - 2005 GMC Envoy

  Got really freaked last year when gas started towords $3. We had a 99 4WD GMC Suburban (which I loved), but at $132 a tank twice a month, we figured get rid of it while we could. We wanted a Highlander at first but it was major small on the inside. Then because a GM dealer was nearby we popd in to look at the Envoys. After having test drove Highlanders, Hyundai Santa Fes and Pathfinders we were pleasantly surprised by the Envoy. The interior and ride were far superior to all the other SUVs we test drove, and quite! That in addition to the ride and power sold us. Room was an issue after having had a Suburban but we have adapted nicely.

  Im buying another one - 2002 GMC Envoy

  My wife rarely let me drive it! We sold it due to an overseas job transfer but were returning in July 06 and have already contacted the dealer to get another one. We had some trouble with the A/C however, the dealer fixed it pretty quickly. With the current high fuel costs, Ill get a REAL good deal this year. The 02 SLT was nimble and quick. We averaged 18mpg over 2 years. Not too terrible for a 275hp truck but always room to improve.

  Gas Hog - 2005 GMC Envoy

  While the GMC is a sharp looking SUV, the gas consumption is terrible. No where near the quote on the window sticker. And for the amount you pay, youll have to choose between the payment or the gasoline. Just make sure you check out the service dept. of the dealership. All that is promised in the sales pitch isnt necessarily going to be full filled by the service dept.

  What a great MidSize - 2006 GMC Envoy

  The Envoy rides incredibly smooth and handles quite well. I read the reviews prior to buying and wasnt expecting much in the way of handling so maybe my expectations were low However,I think the Envoy handles quite well for a vehicle of its size. I am equally impressed with the power. It accelerates very smoothly both from a stop and highway driving. The tranny shifts smoothly and its tough to even feel when it "kicks down" to pass. The interior is roomy, quiet, and comfortable. Controls are easily accesible and the Bose stereo system is flawless. The interior looks very nice, but I can see quality becoming and issue if it is abused, but normal use shouldnt be an issue.

  Be Careful! - 2003 GMC Envoy

  The seats on this car, while attractive, are very stiff and not comfortable on long trips. The biggest problem, however, has been the noise - sounds like there is a valve "tapping". Local dealers have claimed that they dont hear the noise and that nothing is wrong. I will be stuck at time to trade/unload! Stereo has been replaced a couple of times. There were 2 recalls from the factory. Seatbelts also stick!

  Update - 2002 GMC Envoy

  I gave a review earlier loving my GMC Envoy SLE 4WD, I do still love it but after driving it for about 1,200 miles my gas line disconnected while driving on a busy highway. Luckily I pulled over in the breakdown lane. The problem was easily fixed but should never have happened. I consider this pretty serious and hope it is not an indication of other problems. Will keep you updated. Also, rear passenger does not shut as easily as others.

  Inside road noise annoying - 2002 GMC Envoy

  My only complaint with my Envoy is that you can hear the road noise penatrate through the vehicle. It sounds like the tires or wind blowing though the rear windows. We also have an air leak on the drivers window. You have to crank up the radio to tune out the noise.

  Female Point of View - 2005 GMC Envoy

  As a short female, this vehicle isnt totally adaptable to my size, but it does have great handling abilities. I have owned SUVs for years and this is very comparable to the top of the line Jeep I used to own. It has tricks and gadgets that even fascinate my husband. I am glad I own this vehicle.

  Excellent Balance - 2002 GMC Envoy

  Not perfect but it dusts the competition. Especially quiet at cruise and a ride that equals/exceeds all competition. Inline six has a nice sound but not as wonderful as all the magazines portend...again, though, better than the competition (though not up to BMW standards).

  I have had the Envoy for four months. No problems. Ride is excellent and much quieter than the 1999 Bravada traded in. I think the interior design is outstanding compared to the Explorer or the 4Runner.
