Overview & Reviews
For more than 100 years now, Ford Motor Company has been selling mass-produced automobiles in the United States and around the globe. Known as one of the Big Three American manufacturers, Ford has attracted millions of loyal customers with a wide range of vehicles that offer considerable value. The automaker's trucks and SUVs have been especially popular. For decades, Ford's F-Series truck has been the best-selling vehicle in America.
The company was founded by Henry Ford in 1903. Ford dreamed of building a car for the masses, and that's precisely what he did, most notably with the immortal Model T of 1908-'27. The latter was bought by 16.5 million Americans during its 20-year lifespan and was affordable enough for Ford's own factory workers to purchase. Ford's early years were also distinguished by its introduction of the moving assembly line. It was the first to utilize this more cost-effective method of production, and its innovation became a mainstay of the manufacturing process.
Ford expanded into the luxury-car market with its purchase of Lincoln Motor Company in 1925. Over the next few years, the company broadened its focus even further by creating the Mercury division to produce mid-priced cars. By the late '30s, Ford had unveiled the stylish Lincoln Zephyr, introduced a low-priced V8 engine and built more than 25 million vehicles.
The 1950s saw the introduction of the legendary Thunderbird. Offering sleek styling and spirited performance wedded to available luxury features like power windows and a signal-seeking radio, the car was a huge hit. Another model of that decade, the Edsel, met with a somewhat less enthusiastic reception. In the wake of abysmal sales, the Edsel was discontinued just a few months into its third model year.
Ford regained its footing in the early 1960s with the introduction of the compact Falcon, a model that was warmly received by the public. By the middle of the decade the automaker had given enthusiasts something to cheer about with the launch of the sporty Mustang, a car that went on to become one of the biggest sellers of its day. Buyers adored the Mustang's low price, available powerful V8 engines and sporty styling. The Mustang even created a brand-new vehicle category: the pony car.
By the 1970s, Ford, like other domestic automakers, was starting to suffer the effects of changing consumer tastes and new government regulations. Many of its cars became shadows of their former selves. But the seeds of rebirth were planted in this decade. In 1979, the company acquired a stake in Mazda; this move would later aid Ford significantly in co-development projects. The company also emerged with a new mindset of global competitiveness.
By the mid-to-late '80s, Ford was showing new strength with its popular Escort and Taurus models while further expanding its empire with the purchase of the Aston Martin and Jaguar brands. Meanwhile, its full-size LTD sedan (later renamed the Crown Victoria) remained a staple of taxi companies and police forces throughout America.
Ford rode a wave of popularity in the 1990s, thanks in part to the huge success of its Explorer midsize SUV. The truck played a huge role in ushering in the era of the SUV. In 1999, Ford expanded its family yet again with the purchase of Volvo's car division, and, in 2000, it acquired Land Rover. For awhile, there was talk of Ford even taking General Motors' spot as the No. 1 automaker in the world.
But the new millennium initially saw a downturn for Ford. Increased competition, a continuing operating loss for Jaguar, legacy costs and a reliance on SUVs for profit took their toll. To compensate, the company sold Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo and introduced a wave of successful new products. Models like the F-150, Fusion, Fiesta, Focus, Flex and Mustang have allowed Ford to regain its health and standing as a very competitive manufacturer.

So Glad I Purchased a Ford - 2010 Ford Fusion
By PresentlySurprised - December 12 - 11:20 amI am so glad that I did not read the bad reviews before I purchased my car, it might have swayed me not to buy. However, I could not be more pleased with this car. I test drove an Accord, Camry, and Altima before I bought this car. I was almost going to purchase the Altima, until my husband convinced me to drive the Fusion. The Fusion has way more extras than the Altima and the Camry for the same price. I get great gas mileage (so far averaging 32 mpg). The 2010 model is so sporty looking and I love, love, love the USB port and the fact that I can just hook up my Ipod and play all of my music. The interior is super easy to clean (a plus with kids). So glad that I made this purchase!

The Little Truck That Could - 2002 Ford Ranger
By kevy002 - December 12 - 10:00 amI purchased this truck a month ago and use it everyday for work. I put a box cover on it and store all my eqipment and parts back there. The 4 doors help a huge amount when trying to get to things in the back of the cab. My first new truck, and it rocks!

Impressed - 2002 Ford Focus
By jayandrew - December 10 - 11:06 pmI bought a 2002 Focus ZTS with an automatic a week ago and am very impressed. The car feels very solid, rides well and has excellent handling and traction. The weather this past week has tested the traction control and the advance-trac. Both did good. I got the car for about $400 over invoice and it came with all the options that I wanted including the 6 disc changer.

Great Vehicle - 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid
By WNKent - December 10 - 7:50 pmI have had this vehicle for almost 2 months and have put 3300 miles on it. Milage has been as advertised, about 29 mpg on the highway and 30 in town. I have learned to coast into stop signs and traffic light so that the electric engine takes over. After trading a F-150 pick up truck for this SUV I feel as if I am driving a sports car.

Screaming Yellow (A Lemon?) - 2005 Ford Mustang
By Lorie - December 9 - 11:01 pmWe waited patiently for our Mustang to arrive. Three other individuals waited behind us in case our purchase did not go through. We drove away the happy owners of the 2005 Mustang GT Premium in Screaming Yellow. We chose to add the racing stripe package to complete the look. We get lots of compliments, with most people saying the Screaming Yellow looks the best. After a few weeks of driving it, we began to notice a popping noise coming from the front wheel area. The noise was most noticeable when turning slowly or backing and turning. Service department adjusted steering but noise continued to increase. Problem turned out being the upper strut bearing assembly which the service department replaced.

My great Escape - 2005 Ford Escape
By Ginny - December 9 - 11:36 amThe Ford dealer and the great vehicle make this the best vehicle I have ever purchased. The Escape does everything a big SUV does. I looked at the CR-V and a RAV4 and they just did not match up to the Escape.

best hatchback for the money - 2004 Ford Focus
By racerjae - December 9 - 10:00 amThis car is worth every penny, especially with the generous rebates. All the magazine reviews are correct. The car handles and brakes like a race car. Although the SVT Focus is sluggish at low rpms, it comes on forcefully (like a turbo) at mid to high rpms. It has a nice exhaust note thats not offensive like aftermarket ones, and the telescoping and tilting steering wheel allows for the perfect driving position. The performance, practicality, utility, and fun to drive aspects of this car are unmatched. If you can find one without the unnecessary options, buy it. I got mine (no options) for only $16,700 out the door! Definitely a no- brainer.

Pocket Rocket - 2002 Ford Focus
By fsovctu0s2 - December 9 - 12:43 amBought as a leftover & paid $15,000. Needed snow tires for N.E. winters. Had 3 alternators, numerous horns, loose heat shields, and car felt like it had lost its snap. Brought to dealer who discovered a broken intake manifold control valve. Part was on backorder so had to wait about 3 weeks. Had rental with extended warranty. When I got the car back it was like new again with the power. Battery light came on day after I came home with it due to a bad connector at alternator. Dealer fixed immediately when I returned. Idle was high but I think the new control valve fixed that. Brakes are awful in the wet. Front brakes replaced @ 40,000 miles & same results. I do love the car but engine light has been on. Great on long trips.

Superior comfort - 2006 Ford Crown Victoria
By billg - December 8 - 7:56 pmThis is my 3rd Crown Vic. They have to be one of the greatest values out there. They are dirt cheap to insure (~$700/yr for FULL coverage) and maintain. Fuel economy is not outstanding, but decent (18mpg in typical suburban driving). The ride is supremely comfortable and the car handles respectably for its size. My 2nd CV (a 94) has NEVER had any mechanical trouble or been in for other than routine service. The reliability of these cars is amazing and comfort level is top notch.
