For more than 100 years now, Ford Motor Company has been selling mass-produced automobiles in the United States and around the globe. Known as one of the Big Three American manufacturers, Ford has attracted millions of loyal customers with a wide range of vehicles that offer considerable value. The automaker's trucks and SUVs have been especially popular. For decades, Ford's F-Series truck has been the best-selling vehicle in America.

The company was founded by Henry Ford in 1903. Ford dreamed of building a car for the masses, and that's precisely what he did, most notably with the immortal Model T of 1908-'27. The latter was bought by 16.5 million Americans during its 20-year lifespan and was affordable enough for Ford's own factory workers to purchase. Ford's early years were also distinguished by its introduction of the moving assembly line. It was the first to utilize this more cost-effective method of production, and its innovation became a mainstay of the manufacturing process.

Ford expanded into the luxury-car market with its purchase of Lincoln Motor Company in 1925. Over the next few years, the company broadened its focus even further by creating the Mercury division to produce mid-priced cars. By the late '30s, Ford had unveiled the stylish Lincoln Zephyr, introduced a low-priced V8 engine and built more than 25 million vehicles.

The 1950s saw the introduction of the legendary Thunderbird. Offering sleek styling and spirited performance wedded to available luxury features like power windows and a signal-seeking radio, the car was a huge hit. Another model of that decade, the Edsel, met with a somewhat less enthusiastic reception. In the wake of abysmal sales, the Edsel was discontinued just a few months into its third model year.

Ford regained its footing in the early 1960s with the introduction of the compact Falcon, a model that was warmly received by the public. By the middle of the decade the automaker had given enthusiasts something to cheer about with the launch of the sporty Mustang, a car that went on to become one of the biggest sellers of its day. Buyers adored the Mustang's low price, available powerful V8 engines and sporty styling. The Mustang even created a brand-new vehicle category: the pony car.

By the 1970s, Ford, like other domestic automakers, was starting to suffer the effects of changing consumer tastes and new government regulations. Many of its cars became shadows of their former selves. But the seeds of rebirth were planted in this decade. In 1979, the company acquired a stake in Mazda; this move would later aid Ford significantly in co-development projects. The company also emerged with a new mindset of global competitiveness.

By the mid-to-late '80s, Ford was showing new strength with its popular Escort and Taurus models while further expanding its empire with the purchase of the Aston Martin and Jaguar brands. Meanwhile, its full-size LTD sedan (later renamed the Crown Victoria) remained a staple of taxi companies and police forces throughout America.

Ford rode a wave of popularity in the 1990s, thanks in part to the huge success of its Explorer midsize SUV. The truck played a huge role in ushering in the era of the SUV. In 1999, Ford expanded its family yet again with the purchase of Volvo's car division, and, in 2000, it acquired Land Rover. For awhile, there was talk of Ford even taking General Motors' spot as the No. 1 automaker in the world.

But the new millennium initially saw a downturn for Ford. Increased competition, a continuing operating loss for Jaguar, legacy costs and a reliance on SUVs for profit took their toll. To compensate, the company sold Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo and introduced a wave of successful new products. Models like the F-150, Fusion, Fiesta, Focus, Flex and Mustang have allowed Ford to regain its health and standing as a very competitive manufacturer.

  • 05 Stang is Awesome! - 2005 Ford Mustang
    By -

I pre-ordered this car back in May 2004 on the first day that dealers could take an order for an 05 Stang. Mine is a loaded GT premium - upgraded red leather, aluminum wheels, interior upgrade package, side airbags, alarm. The power, handling and build quality are great. I love this car!

  • New F150 - 2010 Ford F-150
    By -

This is my first F150 after owning in the past 8 years F250s. Im amazed how the ride comfort is. Also the towing capability over the mountains in East Pa is above the 06 5.4 powered F250 I traded. It has to be the lighter weight and the 6 speed auto in the 2010. My last F150 was a 1995 XLT. That truck I thought was a very comfortable truck after driving a 1985 XL for 10 years. Heard the term "country caddy" The 2010 F150 fits the bill and is ready to work. I hauled a compact tractor from Pa the upstate Ny.

  • Pleased - 2003 Ford Taurus

Only 3500 miles thusfar, but I have been surprised with its excellent overall handling and quietness. The 200 HP Duratec engine is impressive. No complaints or problems to report.

  • Awesome car - 1990 Ford Probe
    By -

I am the original owner and absolutely I love this car. I have the Ford V6 engine & trans with 191,000 on it & the car is still going strong. I have never had any trouble with the engine & trans and this car has never stranded me. Its fun to drive and handles well. The car has its original black paint and still shines like a new car. Well done Ford. I hope to keep it forever.

  • Love my hybrid - 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid
    By -

We were lucky enough to get this hybrid off the truck as there were none left in New England. I have not had trouble with my car at all. I do take it to required check-ups and oil changes. It gets out of alignment about once a year but Im sure my new drivers are responsible for that. They love to take the hybrid because their sporty cars are gas hogs. At first the mileage was just average but as it ages it gets better and better. The interior is driver friendly, its good in snow and warms up super fast on icy days. After three years and 72,000 miles, I love it and will replace it with the same thing when it gets too old to go.

  • Excellent Car - 2007 Ford Edge
    By -

I was rear ended by a Dodge Ram going 70 mph while I was at a stop. This car was awesome! My passenger and I walked away a little sore, but we walked away. My car is totaled now but Im in the process of buying a new one, unfortunately they dont make the Dark Amethyst in the 2008s.

  • Best car byord so far - 2005 Ford Five Hundred

I like very much the interior, trunk space, handling, very comfortable seats, very good visibility, air conditioner works very well as do the instruments on the display. I love this car.

  • First Ford Product - 2008 Ford Edge
    By -

The Edge is my first Ford product. We have been very happy with it overall. We looked at about every crossover/SUV out there. The Edge best met our needs and we have had no regrets, concerns or problems with it in the three months we have had it. The final selling point for us was the rear seat roominess. We really like the Edge. It is a winner!

  • So far love it! - 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid
    By -

I have had my Cmax for 15 days today! My best trip so far has netted 52.8 mpg, with an average of 42.7 mpg. I bought this car for the looks and how much fun it is driving! I can and have followed all of the hints and tips regarding driving a hybrid, and reaped those benefits, 52.8 mpg! I have also enjoyed zipping around town, and still am getting fantastic gas mileage. Will follow up in a few months!

  • Great Car, great price! - 2006 Ford Explorer
    By -

I looked at a lot of SUVs before I purchased the Explorer, and Im glad I picked the Explorer. Great ride, very quiet, good pickup, turns on a dime. Im 64" and have plenty of room. I cant say enough about the Explorer. The only negative is gas mileage around town at 14mpg, highway is ok at 21 if you keep it under 75.
