Overview & Reviews
For more than 100 years now, Ford Motor Company has been selling mass-produced automobiles in the United States and around the globe. Known as one of the Big Three American manufacturers, Ford has attracted millions of loyal customers with a wide range of vehicles that offer considerable value. The automaker's trucks and SUVs have been especially popular. For decades, Ford's F-Series truck has been the best-selling vehicle in America.
The company was founded by Henry Ford in 1903. Ford dreamed of building a car for the masses, and that's precisely what he did, most notably with the immortal Model T of 1908-'27. The latter was bought by 16.5 million Americans during its 20-year lifespan and was affordable enough for Ford's own factory workers to purchase. Ford's early years were also distinguished by its introduction of the moving assembly line. It was the first to utilize this more cost-effective method of production, and its innovation became a mainstay of the manufacturing process.
Ford expanded into the luxury-car market with its purchase of Lincoln Motor Company in 1925. Over the next few years, the company broadened its focus even further by creating the Mercury division to produce mid-priced cars. By the late '30s, Ford had unveiled the stylish Lincoln Zephyr, introduced a low-priced V8 engine and built more than 25 million vehicles.
The 1950s saw the introduction of the legendary Thunderbird. Offering sleek styling and spirited performance wedded to available luxury features like power windows and a signal-seeking radio, the car was a huge hit. Another model of that decade, the Edsel, met with a somewhat less enthusiastic reception. In the wake of abysmal sales, the Edsel was discontinued just a few months into its third model year.
Ford regained its footing in the early 1960s with the introduction of the compact Falcon, a model that was warmly received by the public. By the middle of the decade the automaker had given enthusiasts something to cheer about with the launch of the sporty Mustang, a car that went on to become one of the biggest sellers of its day. Buyers adored the Mustang's low price, available powerful V8 engines and sporty styling. The Mustang even created a brand-new vehicle category: the pony car.
By the 1970s, Ford, like other domestic automakers, was starting to suffer the effects of changing consumer tastes and new government regulations. Many of its cars became shadows of their former selves. But the seeds of rebirth were planted in this decade. In 1979, the company acquired a stake in Mazda; this move would later aid Ford significantly in co-development projects. The company also emerged with a new mindset of global competitiveness.
By the mid-to-late '80s, Ford was showing new strength with its popular Escort and Taurus models while further expanding its empire with the purchase of the Aston Martin and Jaguar brands. Meanwhile, its full-size LTD sedan (later renamed the Crown Victoria) remained a staple of taxi companies and police forces throughout America.
Ford rode a wave of popularity in the 1990s, thanks in part to the huge success of its Explorer midsize SUV. The truck played a huge role in ushering in the era of the SUV. In 1999, Ford expanded its family yet again with the purchase of Volvo's car division, and, in 2000, it acquired Land Rover. For awhile, there was talk of Ford even taking General Motors' spot as the No. 1 automaker in the world.
But the new millennium initially saw a downturn for Ford. Increased competition, a continuing operating loss for Jaguar, legacy costs and a reliance on SUVs for profit took their toll. To compensate, the company sold Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo and introduced a wave of successful new products. Models like the F-150, Fusion, Fiesta, Focus, Flex and Mustang have allowed Ford to regain its health and standing as a very competitive manufacturer.

Great Car! - 2007 Ford Edge
By Dave Miller - June 15 - 11:53 pmI had been looking at CUVs for some time and then I test drove this car. My drive was mostly on the freeway and I was shocked at the outstanding ride. Bought one on the spot! Have since gone on two short trips and could not be happier! Beautiful exterior topped only by the interior. Vista roof is amazing. Love the 18" chrome wheels. Mileage could be better but this car is by far the best in this class. You owe it to yourself to test drive the Edge and make sure you take it on the freeway as it just glides down the road!

Pleasureable Driving Experience? - 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid
By wnyvet - June 15 - 7:13 pmAbsolutely! In todays hustle-n- bustle world, never thought it possible, to actually look forward to getting behind the wheel! 97 Accord served me well for 13 years, but I was ready to give Ford a go. Thus far, am extremely happy. The rides head-n-shoulders more comfortable/enjoyable than the Accord. Awesome economy; improving daily w/experience. Exceeding 40 MPG combined, and rising, doubling the Accord. Technologys there to achieve awesome results, yet with slightly practiced driving discipline, happiness prevails. Fun to drive: can improve, when not pushed by over-aggressive motorists. Build quality/reliability: too early for an accurate assessment, happy so far.

My 05 Escape - 2005 Ford Escape
By Lon R. Thompson - June 14 - 3:33 pmI have wanted an SUV for a long time, and am very pleased with the comfort, ride, and performance of the Escape. It does everything it is supposed to do without any hesitation. The quality of this vehicle is amazing, and it is hard to beat the price in this level of SUVs. I have driven many different kinds of vehicles, and this is one of the funnest ones I have ever driven. Plus you can throw all your camping gear in it, with the dogs, and have an adventurous weekend, wherever you want to go. I rate the Escape with an A+!

Flexing in my Flex - 2018 Ford Flex
By Shondy - June 14 - 3:27 pmIt’s a spacious car for the money. I never would have thought I’d own a ford, but here I am loving it. Mostly great review of this vehicle, couple drawbacks but they’re minor in comparison.

One Bad Yellow Steeda - 2006 Ford Mustang
By ScubaSteve - June 13 - 2:56 amI just love this car. Its a blast to drive. Add some Steeda magic to it and it leaves the competition wondering "Whered it go?" A few fit and finish issues keep it from scoring higher with me, but I love it so much, Im going to get another. A Grabber Orange convertible will be added to our stable of Fords very soon. Look for its tail lights on a street near you.

NICE and FUN, but not perfect! - 2005 Ford F-150
By james cook - June 12 - 10:10 amPlenty of room for yourself the wife and 2 kids. Looks and drives nice. One breakdown within 6 months. Manifold gasket leaked oil onto sensor and brakes went out. Other than that this truck drives well.

Ford Got it Right! - 2008 Ford Taurus X
By Steve in PA - June 12 - 9:00 amI bought this because I wanted more space to move whatever I have to when necessary, but I dont need to drive around in a huge truck. I have three small kids, and they fit in here very nicely. Its easier to buckle them into the back seats than in my girlfriends minivan. So far the car has been reliable, comfortable, and very practical. On the other hand, the OEM Continental tires handle sloppily- had the same issue with my 03 Mercury Sable, switched to Goodrich, wow! I did have a problem where the Check Engine light would come on; diagnosed as bad camshaft sensors, replaced under warranty and they gave me a loaner car. Timing chain guide was noisy, same deal.

Unexpected Quality - 2007 Ford Mustang
By jerry - June 12 - 3:06 amThe quality is superb, the interior comfy, back seats a bit tight. This thing is super. I highly recommend that anyone looking for a convertible test drive this car last. Fully decked out, it was still $8000 less than the EOS, and the convertible top is flawless. You might like the looks of the Vette, as we have, from the outside, but here the looks are inside too, great seating, and be careful for that accelerator pedal!

Meets Expectations - 2004 Ford Excursion
By victoriacoffeeroaste - June 12 - 2:00 amWe wanted a large SUV to accommodate traveling with three daughters under the age of 5, their stuff, our stuff, and the necessary traveling goodies to keep them entertained. We started with a 02 Explorer, but it filled fast, necessitating the purchase of an external hitch carrier. Compared to the Explorer, the Excursion is a cave and can handle loads of stuff. We recently packed it with two tricycles, two small bikes with training wheels, a stroller, and a duffle bag. Everything fit behind the third seat! Right now we are averaging 16 mpg combined driving.
