Make Overview:

For more than 100 years now, Ford Motor Company has been selling mass-produced automobiles in the United States and around the globe. Known as one of the Big Three American manufacturers, Ford has attracted millions of loyal customers with a wide range of vehicles that offer considerable value. The automaker's trucks and SUVs have been especially popular. For decades, Ford's F-Series truck has been the best-selling vehicle in America.

The company was founded by Henry Ford in 1903. Ford dreamed of building a car for the masses, and that's precisely what he did, most notably with the immortal Model T of 1908-'27. The latter was bought by 16.5 million Americans during its 20-year lifespan and was affordable enough for Ford's own factory workers to purchase. Ford's early years were also distinguished by its introduction of the moving assembly line. It was the first to utilize this more cost-effective method of production, and its innovation became a mainstay of the manufacturing process.

Ford expanded into the luxury-car market with its purchase of Lincoln Motor Company in 1925. Over the next few years, the company broadened its focus even further by creating the Mercury division to produce mid-priced cars. By the late '30s, Ford had unveiled the stylish Lincoln Zephyr, introduced a low-priced V8 engine and built more than 25 million vehicles.

The 1950s saw the introduction of the legendary Thunderbird. Offering sleek styling and spirited performance wedded to available luxury features like power windows and a signal-seeking radio, the car was a huge hit. Another model of that decade, the Edsel, met with a somewhat less enthusiastic reception. In the wake of abysmal sales, the Edsel was discontinued just a few months into its third model year.

Ford regained its footing in the early 1960s with the introduction of the compact Falcon, a model that was warmly received by the public. By the middle of the decade the automaker had given enthusiasts something to cheer about with the launch of the sporty Mustang, a car that went on to become one of the biggest sellers of its day. Buyers adored the Mustang's low price, available powerful V8 engines and sporty styling. The Mustang even created a brand-new vehicle category: the pony car.

By the 1970s, Ford, like other domestic automakers, was starting to suffer the effects of changing consumer tastes and new government regulations. Many of its cars became shadows of their former selves. But the seeds of rebirth were planted in this decade. In 1979, the company acquired a stake in Mazda; this move would later aid Ford significantly in co-development projects. The company also emerged with a new mindset of global competitiveness.

By the mid-to-late '80s, Ford was showing new strength with its popular Escort and Taurus models while further expanding its empire with the purchase of the Aston Martin and Jaguar brands. Meanwhile, its full-size LTD sedan (later renamed the Crown Victoria) remained a staple of taxi companies and police forces throughout America.

Ford rode a wave of popularity in the 1990s, thanks in part to the huge success of its Explorer midsize SUV. The truck played a huge role in ushering in the era of the SUV. In 1999, Ford expanded its family yet again with the purchase of Volvo's car division, and, in 2000, it acquired Land Rover. For awhile, there was talk of Ford even taking General Motors' spot as the No. 1 automaker in the world.

But the new millennium initially saw a downturn for Ford. Increased competition, a continuing operating loss for Jaguar, legacy costs and a reliance on SUVs for profit took their toll. To compensate, the company sold Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo and introduced a wave of successful new products. Models like the F-150, Fusion, Fiesta, Focus, Flex and Mustang have allowed Ford to regain its health and standing as a very competitive manufacturer.

I car sounds ridicously good gets alot of looks, butits kind of hard to drive in the rain especially going up hill. Car bounces alot on rough surfaces, but on smooth surfaces this car is ridiclously fast. On a tank of gas i can get up to 480kms on the highway and in the city if i drive fast around 270kms out of a tank. The car has had a clutch break down and replaced transmission bearings which ford fixed for free it cost 7300 dollars just in parts. They said they wouldnt have covered it but since it only had 10 thousandkms People either love this car or just dont notice it. On cornering the car feels realyl front heavy

  • Michigan based company finally makes one - 2005 Ford Escape

I bought the car back in October 04. While I personally think it should be getting at least 30 MPG, the 26 and above that I am getting with it is acceptable. It does take time to learn to drive to get the better millage, so Im giving myself time. The handling and quietness of the ride is terrific. The car always has the power available when or if I need it.

  • This is a Ford? - 2010 Ford Fusion

I am a long-time Hondaphile. Have owned Hondas for years. If not a Honda a Toyota. This time around I decided to try a Fusion because of a test- drive offer at the autoshow. HOLY COW. Quiet, smooth, fantastic transmission, very cool design both inside and out. Out went the Accord, in came the Fusion. Driving one would make you a convert too. It really out-Hondas the Accord. Imagine a quieter, smoother Accord and this is the car. The price point is very good too. I saved thousands over a comparably equipped Honda. Lastly, it is a recommended car by Consumer Reports and the reliability ratings have been stellar. I am happy that I tried out a Ford dealership.

  • I Focused on the right vehicle! - 2008 Ford Focus

I love my new car! I am quite the features addict and everything about this car rocks my world. This aint your mamas Ford! Give one a test drive and youll see what everyone else sees. One great little car. I am a former owner of a New Beetle/Turbo and I am not disappointed with the power that this vehicle displays. I was worried about no giddyup, but I worried unneedlessly.

  • A little disappointed - 2006 Ford Fusion
    By -

We traded a 2003 Ford Explorer for a 2006 Fusion to obtain better fuel efficiency, however this was a big mistake. We are only averaging about 19-20 mpg with the Fusion, but have sacrificed a significant amount of space. Our Explorer was roomy and held 7 passengers. The Fusion is small and even with buying the V6 SEL loaded, it is missing some of my favorite luxury features. Also, we purchased the fusion in May 06, then in July 06, Ford offered an extended warranty to all the 2006 models purchased after mid July. What a slap in the face to those of us who took a chance and bought Fords first year model Fusion!

  • Solid and FUN - 2004 Ford Escape
    By -

I picked up a 2004 Escape XLT after test driving a CRV and Liberty. Four words - I love this vehicle!! The CRV is about the same in dimensions however feels cramped and has a terrible 4WD system. The Liberty is too boxy the ride is bumpy and the fuel mileage is terrible. The Escape feels solid is very quick for an SUV, engine sounds throaty, and is extremely comfortable! The controls are logically placed, the seats fold completely flat and the optioned 235 tires along with the 4WD system sticks to snow like dry pavement. The moonroof is large and the cabin feels very spacious unlike the CRV and Liberty. You cant go wrong with this SUV!!!

  • Love my Ford! - 2004 Ford Explorer
    By -

I think the general public has written off the Explorer brand because of the Firestone fiasco. They dont know what they are missing. In my research, I found the Explorer to be the best all around SUV -- all thing considered. The Jeep Grand Cherokee lacked the extensive safety features on the Ford & everything else seemed too expensive. Additionally, when I test drove the Jeep -- they had to jump it both times & I heard squeaking coming from the engine. All other cars were too expensive in comparison with the Ford. I also have been satisfied with the long term reliability of Fords in general ... problems are never major.
