This year the Windstar has been totally redesigned. The biggest news for '99, in addition to the completely new exterior and interior styling, is a left-hand sliding door. The second- and third-row seats are now on rollers for easier removal/interchangeability and the instrument panel has been redesigned for improved ergonomics. There's also a more powerful and cleaner-burning 3.8-liter V6 plus upgraded suspension, transmission, brakes and air conditioning components. New options include side airbags and a trick reverse sensing system.
- As the most recent minivan to undergo a major redesign, the Windstar is now king of safety and high-tech features.

Unreliable - 1999 Ford Windstar
By dsp - April 22 - 7:33 pmBought off lease with 15,000 miles, ran fine until warranty ran out. Around 60,000 miles had constant check engine lights. Would replace one sensor and then the following week it would be another one. Power steering rack started going out and traded it for a Toyota Sienna. I hate to admit but I will never again buy another Ford product.

Start Saving for a New Transmission - 1999 Ford Windstar
By LGW - March 24 - 5:07 pmMy 1999 Ford Windstar will be the last American make vehicle I ever purchase. Despite following recommended maintenance guidelines, this vehicle has required: four new O2 sensors, replacement of front end bearings, countless recall fixes and the coupe de grace, a completely new transmission and I have only put 68,000 miles on this vehicle. Now Ive noticed that the automatic locks are disfunctioning, there is a short in the electrical panel and the horn doesnt work.

By Jim - February 26 - 10:52 amWe have had several problems with this vehicle. The paint started to flake off the roof at approximately 65,000K with Ford denying any widespread problems with paint. The electrical system has been problematic causing the dash to flicker and door locks to work erratically. The valves have made noise since we bought it, with Ford unable to find a problem. We have also had front suspension and power steering work. When called about the paint problems, the dealer said I would have to call Detroit...but claimed NOT to have Fords 800 number! I AM THROUGH WITH FORD PRODUCTS!

Big mistake.New transmission at 45k miles, front end noise that cannot be diagnosed, bouncing sensation at highway speeds, many minor repairs later, will never have another Ford in the driveway. I highly suggest TCO not price when buying a vehicle.

If I had researched the Ford Windstar more thoroughly, I would have known about its history of transmission system failure due to poor design. Ford could not be more apathetic. Ive read numerous tales of enraged consumers who have appealed to Ford only to have Ford Customer Service reps turn a deaf ear. My 99 Windstar is curently no more than a lawn ornament. I cant afford to put a THIRD transmission in it. (Yes, I did say the transmission has already been replaced once, at 43,000 miles. It just conked out at 74,000 miles.) DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY!

Not Without an Extended Warranty! - 1999 Ford Windstar

By mark - January 3 - 5:46 pmBought this ‘99 Windstar new took it into the dealer at 1,500 miles for an oil change, and it came back with a new transmission (under warranty). Need I say more. Terrible quality. In most other ways, an average boxy minivan.

So-so - 1999 Ford Windstar

My only complaints were that the interior was less roomy and not as nice as the Caravan and the transmission seemed to shift "hard". Roughly at 5K the interior lights started intermittently flashing. I brought it in for warrantee work but they were never able to solve the problem. With only 2500 miles left on warrantee the transmission blew. The Windstar was in the dealship for over a week. Would I buy another Windstar? Probably not due to many of the problems Ive seen (including 4 recalls)plus the fact the gas mileage is quite poor.

Piece of junk! - 1999 Ford Windstar
By calfano - December 14 - 6:18 pmWe bought this as a 1 year old car. Got extended warrenty through 7/04. Three weeks later transmission went at 68,000 miles. Is in shop as we speak for the A/C problem. Constant alignment issues. Front end replaced. Back windows dont work. My dealership did pay for half of the transmission, but I was still out $1,200. My husband and I will NEVER own, drive or even ride in another Ford again. I dont care what kind it is. I have spent more than this is even worth! Ford, wake up and smell the coffee. Renaming it a "Freestar" doesnt fool anyone. The car is a piece of junk!

By statchick - October 6 - 10:00 amI fell in love with the styling a year and a half ago too bad it has never run right. Replaced the brakes at 25,000, needed new tires just to keep on the road without sliding off. Transmission needs replacing at 50,000. I am dumping this one asap and never buying Ford again.
