This Year's Model Updates:

Ford widens the driver door as a stop-gap measure until the 1999 Windstar arrives with a fourth door. Subtle styling revisions and a new Limited model round out the changes for 1998.

Pros:
  • Powerful engines and roomy interior.
Cons:
  • Offensive shape, lack of suspension refinement.

  • 98 Windstar has been a great car - 1998 Ford Windstar

I bought this pretty basic model Windstar about 7 years and 100k miles ago and it still runs great - a bit scratched-up, but runs great. Loads of power and still a smooth ride.

  • Great Minivan - 1998 Ford Windstar

We bought our 1998 Windstar GL in early 1999 after being returned from a 1 year lease. I was impressed with the power, roominess, and gas mileage this minivan delivered (about 20-23 mpg). We had a couple of early service issues (replaced front "ball joints" and an early oxygen sensor failure), but otherwise the vehicle perfomed very well. We were sorry to lose this vehicle in a rear end collision, but are impressed enough with this Ford to consider replacing this with another Ford. This time with something smaller and with better gas mileage, with the recent sustained hike in gas prices.

  • Works for us! - 1998 Ford Windstar

Got the car in 2001 with 32,000 miles on it. It now has 120,000 miles on it and knock wood, no major problems. Twice replaced the brakes, but considering the mileage, cant complain. The same with the tires, replaced all 4..and keep on top of the fluids. The engine light used to be on all the time, but there were no symptoms so the old addage applied..and eventually it went off. We live in a frigid climate, and the car starts each day without a hitch..we have no complaints..and to be honest, I was afraid to buy a Ford.

  • 125,000 trouble free miles - 1998 Ford Windstar

We bought it new and it has been the MOST reliable car we have ever owned (including Toyota Camry, Nissan Sentra, & Mercedes wagon). This was truly a reliable warhorse, hauling kids, pulling 1,500 lb boat/trailer, long trips or city commuting. The ONLY repair was replacement of failing brain controlling intermittant wipers. Van was totaled last week in 45 mph collision (no injuries thanks to airbags, despite teenage passenger NOT wearing seatbelt). Very sorry to see this one go.

  • Roomy vehicle - 1998 Ford Windstar

My Windstar has given me excellent service to date. I purchased the ESP extended warrenty from Ford and have used it twice. New front wheel ABS sensor and power steering pump. Both after 50,000 miles. Every once in a while a do get a harsh shift in first gear if I come to almost a complete stop then accelerate.

  • Very Satisfied - 1998 Ford Windstar

Bought this 1998 Windstar with 89000 miles on it from a GM dealer. It was on their back row. The price was right. I have put on another 45000 miles with absolutely no problems. The only thing I have replace is tires. I really didnt expect this kind of service. Figured I would have to repair something, but everything keeps on going. Was afraid the lack of a 4th door would be a problem, but Fords stopgap solution of a large drivers door and sliding drivers seat gives adequate access to left rear passenger seat.
