This Year's Model Updates:

This year the Windstar has been totally redesigned. The biggest news for '99, in addition to the completely new exterior and interior styling, is a left-hand sliding door. The second- and third-row seats are now on rollers for easier removal/interchangeability and the instrument panel has been redesigned for improved ergonomics. There's also a more powerful and cleaner-burning 3.8-liter V6 plus upgraded suspension, transmission, brakes and air conditioning components. New options include side airbags and a trick reverse sensing system.

Pros:
  • As the most recent minivan to undergo a major redesign, the Windstar is now king of safety and high-tech features.
Cons:

  • "Breaking Wind"-star - 1999 Ford Windstar

Today is emancipation day from my Windstar - truely an occasion for celebration! Never have I had the displeasure of owning a vehicle with more recalls, problems and strange quirks than this poor van. After reading the other reviews, I realized we would probably be considered one of the fortunate ones since our first major money repair didnt occur until @ 35,000 miles. Since then, Its been downhill. Believe me, I will shed no tears as I hand the dealer the keys once and for all to this "mystery machine".

With 25,000 miles and regular maintenance our Windstar Had the engine replaced at the dealer. At 28,000 miles the transmission needed to be rebuilt.

  • Foreign from now on - 1999 Ford Windstar

Have never owned a vehicle that wore down faster. Cheap build quality compared to foreign cars, seats looked worn after 6 mos, sheetmetal is flimsy and dents extremely easily. At 48k, had to replace cracked manifold, paint is peeling just like on the old GM cars, Ford just informs me it is out of warranty, and has no remedy..

  • Should have bought the Oddesy! - 1999 Ford Windstar

Bought the vehicle pre-owned after we found out we were having twins. Did research, safety was great I didnt expect the vehicle to be so awful. Replaced PC Module after 3 months, tranny after 9 months. Have numerous electrical problems, doesnt start on cold days. What a mistake I should have spent the extra money for the Honda. Called Ford Motor Co., and they dont seem to give a hoot. Pretty bad when I work in the car industry myself as a sales consultant. Cant wait for the Saturn Mini-Van in 2005 model year.

  • 1999 Ford Windstar LX Mini-Van. - 1999 Ford Windstar

I Just recently purchased a Ford Windstar LX Mini-Van, and was very impressed with its performance, space, and overall handling. I did my research, compared vehicles, trucks, suvs and vans. After weeks of searching for the right vehicle I have to say that Ford was "The Right Choice". I also have a Wife & Two Boys, and they could not be any happier with my decision.

  • No Fords - 1999 Ford Windstar

Trouble from 60 days after delivery. Passenger door would not open, sliding door would not stay closed. Electrical issue with door locks. Sliding doors would open after locking. Return from shopping, doors would be open. Spark knocking in engine for 3 years. Ford replaced the engine. Knocking persisted in new engine. Another dealer found the issue after "check engine" light came on. The computer airflow sensor. Now Ford refuses to reimburse me for the fix that started under warranty. This vehicle has been in the shop for electrical, engine and computer issues since delivery no less than 31 times.

  • Ticking Bomb Windstar - 1999 Ford Windstar

My first impressions were overall good though the fit and finish of the car when new bothered me a bit cause it was kind of shoddy from the carpet to plastic mouldings all around in the interior. Had to replace front brakes at 29,000 miles. The electrical system from the interior lights, doors and ignition have been problematic since the beginning and the transmission kinda of thumpy. I feel since am just out of warranty very vulnerable to the historical tranny problems and weighing my options. Overall quality and relability issues experienced first hand want me to sell ASAP and reduce losses.

  • Dont buy one - 1999 Ford Windstar

I am almost at the end of my 3 year lease and I cannot wait to give it back. I am so sick of the noisy transmission, wind noice, squeaks, rattles and recalls. It is a good looking vehicle but the quality leaves a lot to be desired. You would think after all these years Ford could build a proper transmission pay more attention to quality.

  • Never buy a Ford again! - 1999 Ford Windstar

Bottom line...LEMON! Just had the Transmission repaired for $1,060 on a 4 yr old vehicle w/ 71,000 miles! Mechanic said they dont this kind of failure on cars with 140000 miles! Spent the holidays driving the 1988 Camry I gave to my Dad when I bought this van (it has 150000 miles!) Have expierenced multiple little problems with the electrical system, doors, and idler control motor. All of which dealers say they find no problems. Have been religious with maintenance/tune ups expecting this car would last 7-8 yrs. Im unloading this quickly and going back to a Toyota!
