This Year's Model Updates:

This year the Windstar has been totally redesigned. The biggest news for '99, in addition to the completely new exterior and interior styling, is a left-hand sliding door. The second- and third-row seats are now on rollers for easier removal/interchangeability and the instrument panel has been redesigned for improved ergonomics. There's also a more powerful and cleaner-burning 3.8-liter V6 plus upgraded suspension, transmission, brakes and air conditioning components. New options include side airbags and a trick reverse sensing system.

Pros:
  • As the most recent minivan to undergo a major redesign, the Windstar is now king of safety and high-tech features.
Cons:

I have found this vehicle to be energetic, responsive, and highly maneuverable for a mini-van. I was pleasantly surprised by its agressive acceleration and superb cornering ability. Its interior is very functional, though back seat room is a little tight for me at 6 2". It is comparable to other mini-vans though. Its strongest point has been reliability. It is like an energiser bunny. It just keeps going and going. I have had no maintenance problems!

We bought this van in March 99 to replace an aging Mercury Tracer that our family was outgrowing. We have done long trips each summer that weve owned the van. The only annoying problem we have had is the passenger side power door. It will sometimes refuse to close and needs to be turned off and closed manually. Other than that, the ride is comfortable and it has been very reliable. BTW-this is a 4 door LX with one power door.

The Ford Windstar is a nice looking mini-van, but in our case not very reliable. The van has been plagued by engine and transmission problems. After this 2nd bad FORD experience, we are afraid to buy a domestic made vehicle again. Have had bad luck!

I would recommend buying an extended warranty with EVERY car you buy. I bought a warranty for my 99 Windstar and, at 50,000 miles, blew my engine. The dealership claimed it was a timing chain that destroyed the engine. Warranty covered it and I got a new engine--without the warranty, it would have cost me at least $3500.00!!

I have owned two Windstars, a 1995 and 1999. Both have had major mechanical problems engine blew up in the 1995 van, the 1999 van has had the front end replaced, the transmisson rebuilt, and a multitude of other problems. Both vans were bought because of the functionality of the vehicle to service familly needs. Never again. Ford sells junk!!!!!!

Needed a rebuilt transmission after 60,000 miles. Power steering repaired twice. This car was a grave disappointment.

With a new child we went looking for a safe and affordable minivan we could grow into. However 53,000 miles down the road I am ready to drop my Windstar like a bad habit. First problem was at 43,000 miles - a new transmission. Ford offered to help with 80% of the costs, still thats money you shouldnt have to shell out after 43,000 miles. Then 1,000 miles later the Rack and Pinion steering went out. $700 more dollars. Just yesterday the air intake system went. I would not buy a Ford again unless they offered a 10 year/100,000 bumper to bumper - on everything from light bulbs to engine block. Be afraid - be very afraid.

People love to knock the Windstar. Before I bought one, I talked to a Ford mechanic I knew and to a salesman who drove one constantly. The salesman said that you can drive 800 miles in the Windstar and it feels like 250 miles. I found this to be true. It rides well on long trips. The mechanic said that since it has a T-Bird engine, it runs hot and needs some repairs at 60K I havent found that out yet, but I bought the extended engine/transmission warranty so I wouldnt worry. This car has been great. Ive driven a friends Odyssey on trips - Ill take the Windstar (and so will he) any day.

Bought the van because of size and safety rating. It always has problems. The power doors work intermittently, the automatic headlights dont work, rattles. Best of all, I have to use premium to keep the pinging down.
