Should I have the water pump replaced? - 1996 Ford Probe
By jahmn - July 19 - 10:25 pmThis car has been fantastic. Now I have my 1st original part to replace per maintenance - the timing belt at now 60,000 miles. The mechanic suggested doing the water pump also, but there is no indication of wear or imminent failure. A logical suggestion, but are water pumps a problem with this car? I drove it down to the local classic car/hot-rod parade and got waved into it. There were people asking how it could be a Ford (never seen one). They could not believe Ford made such a good looking car. I am the original owner and ordered 5-speed manual, hot-rod red, 16" wide/chrome wheels. It still gets lots of looks. Nothing corners as well as this car - freaks people out.

Best thing I have owned sense my 70 Mav - 1996 Ford Probe
By David Johnson - July 9 - 12:30 pmI purchased my SE in Nov 2005 and this car has done nothing short of giving me its all. I tested it on the highway and it got 37MPG 5speed standard is the only way to go with one of these cars. I have sense then installed a turbo upgrade from a Mazda 626 kit that makes this little car a tiny monster. I am pushing 300HP at the front wheels and still get 30MPG when I drive it like I have some sense. The only car that I have ever owned that came clse to as much fun as this little car is my 1970 Maverick that I put a 1969 302 BOSS in. If you can find one in standard shift it is worth buying for a single person to get around in. Dont have any room in the back seat for anyone older than 7or 8

96 Probe GT - 1996 Ford Probe
By bill - April 3 - 4:02 pmMy GT was bought new. Have had little problems outside normal maintenance. Had to have a new engine put in at 187,000 miles, thats right 187,000! Due to a teenage driver not checking oil. The car now has 210,000. I have a 5 speed, be nice if it was a 6 speed.

A great car. - 1996 Ford Probe
By JS2Music - June 10 - 2:00 amI bought my GT four years ago, and now must part strictly because of cargo space. Its a very peppy car with great handling and an amazing stereo system. My car has a factory sub which adds really nice low end. The Factory CD played is/was terrible, it eventually had to be put out to pasture. Beyond normal maintance, my water pump cracked (a pricey fix-up) And both CV joint cases had to be replaced (possibly my fault). Watch the alignment if not youll go through tires pretty quickly. This was certainly my favorite car so far.

Still A Gem - 1996 Ford Probe
By JohnAllan - December 19 - 2:00 amHave owned my 5-speed GT since new following a Base 92 Probe. Have only had to replace spark/ignition wires and front half shafts in 6 years/5800 miles. A thrill to drive every day with a beautiful engine and exhaust note. Considered trading last year but car sales rep was so interested in buying it from me personally ("Its like new"), I realized I couldnt replace it for less than 5 times its trade value and it is still more comfortable and fun than most new cars! I still love its looks and acceleration - especially in passing situations!
