This Year's Model Updates:

The Freestar is an all-new minivan that replaces Ford's aged Windstar. Recognizing the increased competition in this segment, the company has incorporated must-haves like a fold-flat third-row seat, rear DVD entertainment system and a power liftgate, while adding new items like side curtain airbags that cover all three rows of seating and an available large-displacement V6 for hauling heavy loads.

Pros:
  • Plenty of safety and convenience features, sharp interior design, torquey V6 engines.
Cons:
  • Unimpressive fuel economy numbers, less horsepower than top competitors.

  • Ford KNOWS the transmission SUCKS! - 2004 Ford Freestar

This is a dangerous, nightmarish, horrid and horrible vehicle. Broke down yesterday in the middle of a major highway intersection- slipped out of gear and would not get back in gear. Took 20 minutes and a lot of praying to pull it off the road. Its in the shop AGAIN- just had to replace the tranny less than 2 years ago at less than 60k miles and replaced cam shaft sensor as well just a year ago. There is a class action lawsuit out because of the trannys- but like most of my fellow co-owners, who among us has the $$$ to get the lawyers Ford has at its beck-and-call. There was no warning- just accelerated through intersection and it stopped- the motor was still on, but no gear! SCARY!!!

  • Recent Purchase, WARNING DO NOT BUY! - 2004 Ford Freestar

While driving home, my driver side window quit working. The buttons on my radio quit working, although it randomly kept trying to reprogram "preset 2". Finally, at 65mph on a busy road, I rapidly lost all acceleration. Almost exactly like many of you have explained with the erratic RPM. I flushed the transmission fluid, hoped that it was a fluke. Fixed a loose connection on the driver side door, got the window working again. The radio was still acting up, but feeling confident I hopped into my ‘NEW’ van only to have it NOT START AT ALL. Last September my wife and myself purchased one of these dang vans, well folks in been nightmare after nightmare. Well put a whooping $5000 in repairs in the van to this point. Oil cooler lines and cooler. transmission, oh and another thing the three back spark plugs where ceased in the motor. And they where the original plugs. And then was the brakes. Another nightmare and another $1900. Yeah, if youre rich and want to get poor fast, then purchase on of these crappy, money taking vans. But dont say I didnt warn you. Run. If the dealer trying to sell you one. Fast! Are you running yet!

  • Stay Away From This Car - 2004 Ford Freestar

After only 70,000 miles, the transmission of our 2004 Ford Freestar broke down. I was in the middle of traffic during rush hour with the car suddenly driving backwards after a brief red light. However, it didnt stop there. My car was towed to the dealership where they neglected it for a week. In total, they said that it would cost $3,600 just for fixing the transmission AND that didnt cover rental costs. All in all, I would definitely not recommend this vehicle to anyone. Buyer Beware.

  • Ford needs to step up! - 2004 Ford Freestar

We got our Freestar in October of 2004. We were told it was new and that only the dealer had drove it. We ended up paying full brand new price, when it had over 16,000 miles on it. We get it home and immediately started seeing problems. The side mirror had been glued on, the door handle on the back gate kept coming off, we was supposed to had a bumper to bumper warranty on it, but when I took it in to get handle put back on we was told it would cost us a minimum of $300 just to get it looked at! There is something wrong with all the wiring, it dies all the time, door locks wont work, and driver window wont roll down. Engine light stays on, and brakes and tires cant last long on front end. All in all this is not a good vehicle. Do not buy!
