This Year's Model Updates:

Raising the bar for compact vehicles, Ford is offering its stability system -- called AdvanceTrac -- on ZTS Sedans and ZX3 Hatchbacks. Ford has also made previously optional features standard equipment. Highlights include a driver armrest on every model except LX and power windows on SE Sedans and Wagons. SE Wagons also get the Zetec engine as standard and can be ordered with a manual transmission. A new manual moonroof is offered on the ZX3 and new 16-inch wheels are standard on ZTS Sedans and optional on ZX3 Coupes.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful and large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, good selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:
  • Lots of suspension movement, not enough low-end grunt, polarizing styling.

  • Dont Buy A Focus - 2001 Ford Focus

I bought my Focus new. I am also very good with the maintenance. Nothing but problems from the start. Rotors and brakes were a problem from the manufacturer. Then came sensor troubles. Too many recalls. Next was the 4 times I had to have the stereo replaced due to a battery that was going bad..it took 4 tries to figure that out? Then went the air compressor at 36,000 miles only to follow 2 months later with the evaporator core in the air conditioning. ($1,000.00 each!) Next went the faulty alarm system. Lastly, if you turn the radio up loud enough, you cant hear the horrible vibrations! The worst part is the fact that the car has NO value!! Going shopping for a Honda now!

  • Be warned!!! - 2001 Ford Focus

I was just informed that my focus is corroding from the inside out. Nice huh? The first door went this week, they told me at the dealership they could fix it, but next time (not IF it happens again, but WHEN it happens again) the whole latch assembly will be replaced. The same symptoms have already started on two other doors. This is all besides the O-ring being replaced, the Oxygen sensor dying, and a cylanoid being replaced as well. Anyone want a focus?

  • Depends on when you ask me - 2001 Ford Focus
    By -

I have often been asked about how I like my car. It looks good and Im in a Ford town. Well, it depends on when you ask me. I find the performance and the handling very good. I had a Miata and i dare say it is somewhat similar. However, I have been plagued with ticky tack problems. Seats, seatbelts, rear defogger, turn signals.....Very disappointed from that standpoint.

  • Ignition Cylinder Locks - 2001 Ford Focus
    By -

Ive had this car in for the same problem 4 times. The ignition cylinder locks up and leaves me stranded, and the only option is to having it towed. 6months later back in the dealer same problem, old part number again. 3months later same problem but new part number.(as if a new part # really helps) They say the key is the problem and thats what causing it to lock up. Itll cost $150 to cut new keys. This of course isnt under warranty..If they had any custumer service this wouldnt be an issue and would of all been handle at the inital repair process.

  • horrible car 2 be your first - 2001 Ford Focus

i thaught it was nice but really it has been nothing but problems.Like: engine shaking and dropping,a whole in transmission, air conditioner stop working, engine light come on,made entire front shake, trunk pop open going over railraod tracks, key control entry stoped working, leaks in car so carpet got mildewd, brake light would come on for no reason, the gaslite would go on when i had just filled it,cd player act silly.the problems go on and they still wont replace it.

  • Build Quality an Issue - 2001 Ford Focus
    By -

2001, bad year for the Focus. Build quality issues. Simple things like rivets and screws, failing or missing entirely. 36,000 mile warranty not near enough for scary quality issues. Fuel economy is not as advertised. Expect 20-25mpg, not 30+.

  • If I knew then what I know now - 2001 Ford Focus

Ive had a love/hate relationship with this car. Its been at the dealership 15 times for all kinds of repairs. I cant get rid of it, since its resale value is really low. I am stuck with a car I dont want. Ford put a bitter taste in my mouth. I think newer models are much better.

  • Quality and engine disappoints - 2001 Ford Focus
    By -

I have driven over 25k miles in my ZTS. Problems so far included: squeaky dash replaced at 5k, squeaky rear brakes replaced at 17k, broken alternator at 17k, seized rear wheel bearing at 23k. Current problem is with too low idle - engine almost died a few times. Persistent problem is weak engine in hot-dry weather.

  • Yellow Focus Looks Like, No, IS a Lemon! - 2001 Ford Focus
    By -

My 2001 ZX3 was the latest of 8 Fords Ive had. At 500 miles the engine was acting like it wasnt getting enough fuel. It ran rough between 2300-3000 RPMs. I felt this most in 3rd gear. I went to the dealer and they didnt find a problem. I returned to the dealer at 750 miles and they said this was a known problem with the onboard computer and as soon as a new program was available they would "Flash" the new program to the computer. 9 months later, still no fix. I just filed with the State of Texas for assistance under the Lemon Law. I like this car, but if Ford wants me to keep me as a customer they need to replace this lemon. If not, Ill be on the waiting list for the new Mini Cooper S.
