This Year's Model Updates:

Four new Focus models debut for 2002: the ZX5 five-door hatchback, the well-equipped ZTW wagon, the sport-tuned SVT hatchback and the Mach Audio ZTS. No matter what Focus you pick in 2002, a power moonroof can now be ordered. The high-end ZTS Sedan loses its standard ABS and crummy fake wood dash trim while gaining a rear spoiler. An in-dash six-disc CD changer is standard on ZX5, ZTS and ZTW but optional on all other Foci except the LX Sedan.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful ergonomics, large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, impressive selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:

  • The Only Hot Hatch - 2002 Ford Focus

I love this car! SVT has outdone themselves! This car blows away the Matrix XRS, and the new Civic Si (and I am a Honda fan!). Definitely worth the extended wait for delivery. Audiophile stereo system is better than any stock system I have ever heard. I cant believe Im driving a hatchback! This car wants to be driven fast. I would recommend it for anyone with a boring commute who wants an affordable rocket. I get more looks in this car than in my modded 97 Honda Prelude.

I have owned my Focus for nearly three years. I have replaced the tires twice. I have had two brake jobs. The wheel bearings have been replaced on every wheel. CD player was replaced, steering rack and steering pump replaced. Now it sounds as though the frame is falling apart. I am so fed up with this car, I am going to trade it in. Oh yeah, resale value stinks!

Delivers to expectations. Performance is good, fuel economy a bit less than expected. Good on the expressway, more comfortable seating than expected.

Ive own a lot of cars, built here, in Europe, and Japan. You cant beat this car for the money. I drive a combination of stop and go city and highway miles every day and get 27 - 28mpg. Very reliable. I also got rid of the Firestone Firehawk tires and put on 4 new BF Goodrich Traction T/As. Better handling and superior rain and snow handling. This car handles better than most cars costing over $35K. Nice trasmission, smooth engine needs more power. 150hp would be just right.

  • A good unfinished product - 2002 Ford Focus

My 2002 Focus SE-Sport sedan is a practical, spacious and enjoyable car. However, Ford did not "push the envelope" when delivering this car in 2000. The fit and finish are probably the biggest problem: materials are of ok quality but various parts are not well adjusted. The Ztec engine provides sufficient power for this class but its too noisy and has low fuel efficiency considering its only a 2.0 litre. Still, I enjoy my Focus very much and am looking forward to the next generation due to appear later this year.

  • Awesome bang for the buck sportscar - 2002 Ford Focus

I was set on buying the wagon version of the Focus. On a whim, I test drive the car I bought, a ZTS sedan, and was instantly smitten with this car. The ride quality and handling was noticably better than the normal Focus sedans, and much better than the wagon. I drove away with it two hours later and it has been the perfect car. So far, there are 10,550ish miles on the clock, and theres not been one, single problem. Its still as fun to drive as the day it was bought--highly recommended.

I enjoyed my Ford Focus ZX3, but... It has been in the shop every month, for unscheduled repairs, for the last 4 months (three additional times during the year prior). It has left me stranded twice (once in a bad part of detroit). It has proven too unreliable in the long run. I was hoping for 160k like I got in my 91 Ford Escort GT, but it looks like I wont make it past 65k in the focus. This is my last ford purchase, ever. It has just proven too unreliable, and Ford customer service is simply awful.

Transmission started slipping at 20,000 miles. Tires worn out by 30K. Transmission now leaking fluid. Low gas mileage.

This car has been great! Fun to drive, lots of goodies, plenty of pep, especially with the manual transmission and Zetec engine. I recommend it to anyone!
