This Year's Model Updates:

Four new Focus models debut for 2002: the ZX5 five-door hatchback, the well-equipped ZTW wagon, the sport-tuned SVT hatchback and the Mach Audio ZTS. No matter what Focus you pick in 2002, a power moonroof can now be ordered. The high-end ZTS Sedan loses its standard ABS and crummy fake wood dash trim while gaining a rear spoiler. An in-dash six-disc CD changer is standard on ZX5, ZTS and ZTW but optional on all other Foci except the LX Sedan.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful ergonomics, large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, impressive selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:

  • $160 for a new KEY - 2002 Ford Focus

Purchased this car in 9/2003 as a lease return. Its been a good car thus far, save the flat tire, or the bad seat belts, the arm rest coming apart, and last but not least the $160 new key.

  • Great body- crappy engine - 2002 Ford Focus

On a recent trip to California I was actually kind of excited when the guy at Hertz said I was getting a ford focus. I really like how the focus looks and as shallow as it may sound, they have a great ad campaign. However, my opinion instantly changed when I got the thing on the road. I wasnt expecting sports car performance, but this car is so underpowered I found it dangerous on the California freeway. The engine also whined like an annoying comedian whenever I attempted to accelerate. It was significantly worse than four cylinder fords Ive owned in the past. It might be a little better with a stick shift.

  • Dont even bother - 2002 Ford Focus

This is the only car I know of that has probles that even the dealer has never heard occur. The car has a radio faceplate attach with electrical tape at the factory (still not replaced), horrible electical gremlins (like inoperable headlights), alignment issues, will roll downhill while in gear with the parking brake on and 1 or R engaged, trunk come open while moving, seats make even 150mi drives end in a bachache, strange buzzes abound, and the power door lock have failed to work on numerous occasions. Nothing has been fixed in the nearly 3 years Ive had the car, and it has been to seven dealers. Last Dec it required 6 services to fix what the dealer had broken while fixing the alignment.

  • plus and minus of the SVT focus - 2002 Ford Focus

There are multiple postive remarks I have for the SVT focus, the car gets up and hauls butt! Fun to drive, awesome features for the $20,000 price tag! 170hp plus 6 gears to play with! Downsides, has been a trouble some car! From valve cover leaking oil, to t-stat housing leaking coolant 2 times. Car has stalled several times for no reason and dealer is unable to diagnos the issue! However Ford continues to service this vehicle as if they were trying to sell me another car (another words works hard to keep it perfect!) Overall this car is amaizing! SVT did a great job designing this sports compact, sorry to see it goign away in 04 though!

This car does whatever I tell it to do. Excellent handling, good brakes, doesnt wallow, even in heavy rain. Fun to drive. Used it to tow a trailer [I moved last month] for 700 miles, 80mph wholeway, smooth as butter and nary a burble from the car.

  • I want OUT!!!!! - 2002 Ford Focus

My steering rack blew two weeks into my having the car. Then the transmission started leaking. Then I had to have my rotors and pads replaced at 19,ooo (a VERY common, and expensive, problem for the Focus). Ive heard I have this to look forward to every year. This morning my calipers got stuck and melted my brakes. Too many problems in too short a time.

  • Love my ZX5 - 2002 Ford Focus

Ive been very happy with my ZX5 so far. I bought it because of the the great ride and handling. It is a lot of fun to drive. Im very happy with the exterior looks and I think the quality of the interior materials are top rate. The 2002 interior is a big improvement over the 2001. My only complaints are that it is a little loud on the highway and I dont think the ZX5 drivers seat is that comfortable.

  • How can Ford make money selling this car - 2002 Ford Focus
    By -

If you are in the market for a "Hot Hatch" look no further. 170 hp of usable power in a four cylinder until now did not exist. Fords SVT team has done it. My previous car was a ZTS that I had turned into a good looking and performing economy car with a few simple modifications, but it cant compare to the SVT. The ZTS is a very nice car dont get me wrong, but for $3500 more you can get an elite vehicle that is unmatched in its segment. The only trick is getting one, they are only supplying 7500 to the american market. Good Luck!

  • A true pureists sports car - 2002 Ford Focus

Honestly. Im not an over excited, 20 something year old yelling, "look at the best thing I own". Im older and still enjoy a great sports car. OK just to recieve some validation from you out there Im 40+ and have been a car guy for a while. Ive owned many sports, luxury sport and sporty cars and I must admit this is one of the finer handling sweetest engined vehicles Ive owned.
