This Year's Model Updates:

Minor changes are in store for the 2003 Ford Focus. Two new trim levels increase the breadth of prices for Ford's economy car; a base trim for the three door hatchback renders air conditioning optional and only comes with a manual transmission. For the five door hatchback, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, front reading lights and a center console are available when you step up to the comfort trim level from the base level. Heated front seats are a new option, as is a traction control and ABS package. New colors for the exterior brighten up the color palette, and the interior is freshened with two new fabric trims. Finally, a CD/MP3 player is now standard on the ZX3 and ZX5. A SVT version of the ZX5 is also scheduled to appear later in the year.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful ergonomics, large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, impressive selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:

  • Dissapointed in the focus - 2003 Ford Focus

The focus is a reliable car. The only problem is its too small, very stiff ride not to comfortable. I would think with a car of that stature you would get good gas mileage, I dont. I probably get 18 miles to the gallon when on the sticker it said 27, not even close. I cant wait to get ride of this car, I hate the focus

Great car. Works well in winter with snow tires. Spirited driving brings out the best in it. Clutch assembly problems and poor gas mileage make the car suffer, though. Insurance companies act like its a sports car also. Wouldnt buy this car again.

Ignition replaced 3 times. Exhaust pipe that connects to engine replaced twice. Mechanic said it will have to be replaced again and again because it is a known defect. Brakes replaced too many times. Now engine rattles. My mother has the same car. Same problems. It has been in fender benders twice and a guy driving a stolen truck ran in to the front end and no dents! The other cars had the damage. That is one great thing about the car. There is not a lot of room in the back seat.

I would like to get a new GT Mustang but do not have the heart to sell my Focus SVT to get one (what does that have to say). Its fun to drive, fast for a 170hp and almost 2800lbs, handles like a sports car (which when you drive it, you think it is). The only problem Ive had with it: the clutch assembly had to be replaced due to a rattle sound it made, especially at idle (Ive heard this has been a problem with some because of the complex clutch/flywheel assembly/design). The 17" wheels are somewhat easy to damage if you hit a bad chuck hole (Ive bent one). When I part with it I know Ill miss.

Excellent handling, 28+mpgs (no kidding), wonderfull array of features, comfort is thru the roof. Adults of average height (510"-6) sit comfortably in back seat w/ average height driver/passenger (and I have a moonroof).

Just picked this leftover 03 ZX5 SVT up last week. Tested just about every car in this class, except GM. Less $ than Mini S, better handling than Matrix XRS, less $$ than WRX, better mpg than V-6 Stang and more room too. I traded a 96 GT convt for this and dont miss it one bit. This is way more fun. Ill wait a year before I bolt on the Jackson supercharger, then itll be even more fun.

My ZTW-wagon is the perfect urban vehicle. Easily hauls four adults and four sets of golf clubs. It handles like a sports car, is quiet with no rattles or squeaks, good pick-up for a 4-banger, 30-mph on trips, and is well-equipped. I have 6-CD stereo, 4-wheel disks with ABS, stability control, moon roof, 16-in aluminum wheels, low profile tires, vanity cover for the storage compartment, rear window wiper-washer, leather wrapped steering wheel, and plenty of storage pockets, bins, cup holders. It has over 60,000 miles without a single problem. The Volvo S-40 underpinnings help make it a wonderful car to drive.

At crusing speeds, there is an electrical problem which causes the vehicle to stall whenever I turn on the lights or flick the high beams back and forth. Its been the shop twice to trace the problem to no avail. While I had the vehicle in the shop for the first service, some grease monkey backed into it damaging the rear bumper. They had the vehicle in the shop for 19 days in January. Whenever I flick the windshield washers, I get a strong smell inside the cabin of antifreeze. Theyve replaced one piece and it still occurs. The drivers seat has a loose piece. Theyve also replaced the outside rubber on the drivers side door and the car alarm.

  • used car = wow - 2003 Ford Focus

We have owned our Focus ZTW wagon for almost 2 years. Purchased used with 13,644 miles on it, we got this fully loaded car for a great price and couldnt be happier with it. In this time we have driven 42,356 miles and the only repairs were new brakes and tires just within the past few weeks. This wagon is truly fun to drive on long trips. 795 miles = about $70.00 gas when gas was almost $3 per gallon, and the cargo room is great. This car replaced a 1994 Escort wagon LX that is STILL running. We loved that car as well, but needed something newer. In a nutshell... if you are in the market for a new small wagon, consider looking at a used Focus, its a great value.
