This Year's Model Updates:

Four new Focus models debut for 2002: the ZX5 five-door hatchback, the well-equipped ZTW wagon, the sport-tuned SVT hatchback and the Mach Audio ZTS. No matter what Focus you pick in 2002, a power moonroof can now be ordered. The high-end ZTS Sedan loses its standard ABS and crummy fake wood dash trim while gaining a rear spoiler. An in-dash six-disc CD changer is standard on ZX5, ZTS and ZTW but optional on all other Foci except the LX Sedan.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful ergonomics, large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, impressive selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:

  • Great Car - 2002 Ford Focus

We bought the car new with sunroof, leather, 5 speed, black, and 6 disc CD. We have put 82k in the last 3 years and just blew the hydraulic clutch slave cylinder. Gieco warranty picked up the tab and have not had any other problems. Wonderful handling, the car is very well balanced and predictable (and I have pushed it to the limit). I would suggest the car to anyone.

Engine wire pulled loose while driving car stopped running and had to be towed. Engine sensor broke car would not run over 30 m.p.h. Tires worn out after 25,000 miles over $120 each to replace (Ford used a non-standard size). Rear brake pads worn out after 30,000 miles. While replacing pads, discovered bearing hub cap was never installed on one side. Tailgate wont stay open. CD player ate CDs and then stopped working (twice). Screws to open CD player require a special tool to remove. Ignition switch broke at 30,000 miles - key would not turn, could not start- drive car. Ford refused to pay for fix, despite dozens of owners reporting similar problems on websites.

It is a blast to drive, a big difference from my 01 Focus. Interior looks a lot nicer and I grew to love the red exterior color I have. Bought the car with issues (bad previous driver), there are quite a # of TSBs on the car but nothing major.

  • Ford figured it out - 2002 Ford Focus

The Ford Focus is one of the best economy compacts out there, period. Fine build quality, comfort for four adults, a joy to drive and great mileage (36.5 highway). It is every bit as good as its Japanese counterparts and thousands less, for a fully equipped car. Mine cost $10,027 for power everything (not seats), ABS, alloy wheels, front & side airbags, DOHC engine and a good sound system. Great commuter car, good first car for a teen driver or choose the wagon for a family in the making. Cant think of any negatives about this car.

  • They could have had a winner!! - 2002 Ford Focus

Ford could have a winner if it would abide by its own slogan "Quality is Job #1" Ive had a water leak through the windshield that necessitated a new carpet being ordered. Gas mileage is atrocious. Ive had quite a few other annoyances, but by far the worst happened last week. I only have 10,500 miles on it and the dealer just told me that I need new brakes on all 4 wheels!! After doing some research, I found a web site: www.fordfocusbrakeproblem.com That says it all. You know there is a problem when a site has had over 60,000 views. There also was a class action suit filed in California. I called Ford to no avail.

  • I love my Ford Focus - 2002 Ford Focus

The first thing I noticed about my Ford Focus was how solid it feels. I owned an Oldsmobile Achieva previously and loved it. The Focus feels as solid as the Olds. The steering base is small and it takes corners easily. The design inside and out is outstanding! I love this car!

  • Great value this ZX3 - 2002 Ford Focus

I love this car. Its roomier than my Taurus. It has every option. The car is nimble for driving around the town and on the freeway. Ford could lose the middle console. Its useless. Seatbelts are designed for child safety & you have to dig for the latch end thats sandwiched between the seat & the console. Tires were replaced with with Pirelli tires at 40,000 miles & should have been 10,000 miles earlier. New front brakes @ 32K. Rotors are disposable. Rear hatch key gasket keeps falling out in car washes. Rust is starting form on the bottom of the hatch. Thats not FOMOCOs fault. Thats from a dealer who repaired the car when my wife tried to move a concrete pole with rear bumper.

I bought a 2002 Focus ZTS with an automatic a week ago and am very impressed. The car feels very solid, rides well and has excellent handling and traction. The weather this past week has tested the traction control and the advance-trac. Both did good. I got the car for about $400 over invoice and it came with all the options that I wanted including the 6 disc changer.

Bought as a leftover & paid $15,000. Needed snow tires for N.E. winters. Had 3 alternators, numerous horns, loose heat shields, and car felt like it had lost its snap. Brought to dealer who discovered a broken intake manifold control valve. Part was on backorder so had to wait about 3 weeks. Had rental with extended warranty. When I got the car back it was like new again with the power. Battery light came on day after I came home with it due to a bad connector at alternator. Dealer fixed immediately when I returned. Idle was high but I think the new control valve fixed that. Brakes are awful in the wet. Front brakes replaced @ 40,000 miles & same results. I do love the car but engine light has been on. Great on long trips.

Best handling/driving car Ive ever driven. Not a luxury car by any means, but superior luxury/comfort value to any other car. More comfortable than many larger more expensive cars.
