This Year's Model Updates:

Raising the bar for compact vehicles, Ford is offering its stability system -- called AdvanceTrac -- on ZTS Sedans and ZX3 Hatchbacks. Ford has also made previously optional features standard equipment. Highlights include a driver armrest on every model except LX and power windows on SE Sedans and Wagons. SE Wagons also get the Zetec engine as standard and can be ordered with a manual transmission. A new manual moonroof is offered on the ZX3 and new 16-inch wheels are standard on ZTS Sedans and optional on ZX3 Coupes.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful and large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, good selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:
  • Lots of suspension movement, not enough low-end grunt, polarizing styling.

  • Very happy with it - 2001 Ford Focus

I purchased a 2001 Ford Focus SE with 13,000 miles, which is unbelieveably low for that year,. It has 24,000 miles on it now, and been using it for 3 months. It has a wonderful ride and smooth acceleration. Never had any problems with it, previous owner was a old couple and rarely used the car. Still has the new car smell and everything inside and out looks like brand new. The sound system is wonderful! All of my friends loved it and they are thinking about buying one like mine. Although the one thing that Ford needs to improve is the gas mileage because I only get 270 miles on full gas tank.

  • Impressive small Ford. - 2001 Ford Focus

I purchased the car used, with 22500 miles on the odometer. Ive only added 4000 miles since, but the car has had no problems. No stalling, no hesitation, no problems. My SE has the Zetec engine. I know other people have had problems, so maybe they have the "regular" 2.0L engine. The cars ride is firm, but far from harsh. Handling is superb, with steering that is super-sharp...maybe TOO sharp (it responds so quickly that it can feel jerky at times). Ive averaged up to 31-mpg with this car (it routinely gets 27-mpg), so I dont know why others are getting such low figures...must be that heavy right foot. :-)

  • Handling - 2001 Ford Focus

I had a large Town car prior to the Focus. When I test drove this car, I was very surprised on how this car handled. I enjoy a 5 speed and with 16" rims and size 205 low profile tires on a small car car this car handlings is EXCELLENT. Mileage during the summer with the air conditioner on is about 25 mpg. I average about 22,000 a year. My daughter bought a new Focus in 2003. Its a 4 door, 5 speed standard with regular rims and tires. I was surprised her car was even quicker than mine. In general, my next car will be a Focus. You have a great little car here, please continue to move forward with it.

I have only had the car for a year, but its a fantastic vehicle. The driving pleasure is just superb. Handling, acceleration, and ride all congeal to create a wonderful product.

  • Not so satisfied - 2001 Ford Focus

had this vehicle for 3 yrs. and went to dealership 30 times with something or the other mechanical issue. Not good for interstate long drives due to seats so stiff and unconmfortable. Ride is truck like(so much for sport suspension), safety features are ok. handles well at high speed. Heavy exterior noise is very uncomfortable. Some components are build cheap plastics. Fuel Economy is good.

  • PERFECT 1st car for college student - 2001 Ford Focus

I recently bought my Silver 2001 Focus SE and so far I LOVE IT!!! It has power everything, CD player, automatic, (loaded). I looked at Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Honda, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Saturn, Dodge and I kept coming back to the focus. I was glad to hear that it was voted 10 best five years in a row and I could definitely see myself getting another focus, but this time the ZX5 in midnight blue, when Im ready to trade my silver focus in. But that wont be for a long time.

  • Fun to Drive - 2001 Ford Focus

This car was bought for my wife and daughter. They are short and still could see the corners of the car and reach the pedles with ease. The surprise was when I drove it, I had head room and leg room. (Im 6) I love to drive it on our back roads in the area. They are hilly and windy giving you all the opportunity to drive. This car is FUN FUN to drive. We have not had any maintenance problems.

Ive driven other SW and none compare to the Ford Focus. Its really built to last. Confort is outstanding, as well as road handling and overall quality.

  • 87K+ and still going strong - 2001 Ford Focus
    By -

Bought it new in Mar 01 to commute between VA and CT plus a lot of around town. 87,500 miles latter Im just doing my first brake job. Other then oil and gas and the occasional windshield wipers Ive had no, repeat NO, problems. I had the fuel pump upgraded for free at 67K due to the recall, but it wasnt a problem yet. Could always use more power, but its got enough for commuting and I routinely get 30+mpg mixed driving. Oh, Im 62", 230#, so the interior room is GREAT for me solo. My three sons are all teen agers and the oldest is a big 16, so it does get a little crowded with all four onboard. Good enough car to give to the oldest for his first ride.

  • Bang for the buck - 2001 Ford Focus

When I bought it, this wagon was the last one in its size and price range available in the in the US.Drove similar rental in European traffic - was sold. Handles better than Civic previously owned. Driving car every day in DC traffic w/5spd and keeping up w/the flow easily. W/5spd manual and ZETEC it is an interesting and fun vehicle. Interior holding up to 2 kids and big dog. Mileage worse than expected, but in traffic, I should not be surprised. Avoid Sheehy Ford in Springfield.
