This Year's Model Updates:

Raising the bar for compact vehicles, Ford is offering its stability system -- called AdvanceTrac -- on ZTS Sedans and ZX3 Hatchbacks. Ford has also made previously optional features standard equipment. Highlights include a driver armrest on every model except LX and power windows on SE Sedans and Wagons. SE Wagons also get the Zetec engine as standard and can be ordered with a manual transmission. A new manual moonroof is offered on the ZX3 and new 16-inch wheels are standard on ZTS Sedans and optional on ZX3 Coupes.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful and large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, good selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:
  • Lots of suspension movement, not enough low-end grunt, polarizing styling.

The Focus has been a good solid car. No major problem but seems to heading for the repair shop more now that it is off warranty. I would suggest to get the extended warranty if possible. Problems with the radio volume control and trunk leaking.

I am the original owner of my Focus. I have been driving it for 3-4 years. It is not the fastest car at the light, but you knew that. It is however, a great deal: once it gets going, it really goes reliable, responsive, handles extremely well (I live in the midwest and laugh at many when I pull easily out of snow), and easy at the gas pump. All in all, a great little car.

The only reason we bought this car was because it was 0% interest. There have been many parts replaced because the metal used was cheap. Its been in the shop every year since weve had it. I am not happy with this car. The extended warranty only covered 1 part any time weve had problems. The warranty seemed to do nothing for us. The ignition and fuel are the biggest problems. Its loud from the noise outside especially on highways. There isnt much leg room in the back seats. The stereo system is TERRIBLE. We replaced our ignition and key 3 times! Loud muffler. This is a noisy, break down car. Id suggest against getting one. Ford never helped me at all with any problems.

  • Should have bought a Civic - 2001 Ford Focus

I have had my fill of ford dealerships. Having nothing but problems with my car from stalling for no reason to the check engine light going on at least once every two months, I would not recomend a Ford Focus! Possibly I got a lemon, but I know a few friends who have had quite a bit of problems with the Ford dealers service departments.

I just got this car on August 2, 2003. It is my first car, and I am a guy, but it is pretty sporty, the 2Dr ZX3 Hatchback. I wish I could of gotten a Chevy Camero Z28 310 Hp, but I ended up with this pretty darn good car with 59,064 miles on it. I know a good car when I see one.

More fun to drive than any other car Ive owned. Would buy a new car if I could find one more fun to drive.

  • Squeaky brakes - 2001 Ford Focus

I purchased this car after driving a rental focus when I totalled my escort. Since the day I got the focus the brakes were an embarrassement. They squeaked so loud, it sounded like I needed a full and complete brake rehaul. Very embarrassing to drive when the car was only a year old. If I parked for 5-10 minutes, the brakes squeaked just as loud. Did not matter what the weather conditions were. They finally had to replace the brake lining, which improved the noise, but it was still there. Have had the car in for a few recalls in 2003. Did not have good luck with the ford escort either. Dont know if I want to go with a windstar or not?

  • worst car in the history of cars - 2001 Ford Focus

This car is the worst car Ive ever had. I bought it used in 2013 with 60k miles on it and I thought I was getting a good deal. But EVERYTHING has gone wrong with this car! It could have partially been because it was possibly poorly maintained by the previous owner, but it has been an absolute nightmare! The radio stopped working after about a month, the fuel pump went out within 2 months, the timing belt, serpentine belt, motor mounts, spark plugs, radiator hose, thermostat, and alternator all went out within a year and now the cooling fans are out. When I replaced the alternator it then went out again a little over a year later too. This car has left me stranded 3 times!!! I have done all necessary maintenance on time since owning it, but there is always a new problem to be had. The electrical issues have been the worst problem, it took several mechanics and 2 alternators, pigtail connectors, and a new battery cable harness just to keep it from dying and yet it still has electrical issues. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR!!! I cant stress it enough!

  • Outstanding Driving Dynamics - 2001 Ford Focus

Pros: The vehicle has excellent steering while the suspension provides a good combination of ride and handling. The engine likes to rev, but provides good low end torque. The interior materials are higher quality with many details (5sp "metal" shifter knob, "metal" accents in doors, "metal" dash plate, etc) than I would expect for this price range. My cars build quality is great. Cons: Ford saved money on the areas you dont see like the absence of inner wheel wells in the rear and a splash guard in the engine compartment. I dont like the Dash Panel.

  • Dont Buy A Focus - 2001 Ford Focus

I bought my Focus new. I am also very good with the maintenance. Nothing but problems from the start. Rotors and brakes were a problem from the manufacturer. Then came sensor troubles. Too many recalls. Next was the 4 times I had to have the stereo replaced due to a battery that was going bad..it took 4 tries to figure that out? Then went the air compressor at 36,000 miles only to follow 2 months later with the evaporator core in the air conditioning. ($1,000.00 each!) Next went the faulty alarm system. Lastly, if you turn the radio up loud enough, you cant hear the horrible vibrations! The worst part is the fact that the car has NO value!! Going shopping for a Honda now!
