This Year's Model Updates:

Raising the bar for compact vehicles, Ford is offering its stability system -- called AdvanceTrac -- on ZTS Sedans and ZX3 Hatchbacks. Ford has also made previously optional features standard equipment. Highlights include a driver armrest on every model except LX and power windows on SE Sedans and Wagons. SE Wagons also get the Zetec engine as standard and can be ordered with a manual transmission. A new manual moonroof is offered on the ZX3 and new 16-inch wheels are standard on ZTS Sedans and optional on ZX3 Coupes.

Pros:
  • Thoughtful and large interior, smooth ride, sharp steering, good selection of body configurations and features.
Cons:
  • Lots of suspension movement, not enough low-end grunt, polarizing styling.

Have had car since new, few problems. Nice roads manners and driveability for compact car. Would not have a problem buying another. Needs a little more horse power, 50 more would be good. :) I thought the ZX3 design was cutting edge in 2001, now all manufacturers have one that looks like the ZX3. Average 21-22 mpg city, 28-29 highway.

  • The factory didnt tighten WHAT?? - 2001 Ford Focus
    By -

I bought my brand new 2002 ford focus on a thursday... by the following monday (only 200 miles later) i was experiencing a popping/grinding noise coming from the front right which appeared to be suspension related. So took it back to the dealer. Well it seems the factory forgot or just didnt tighten the sway arm links on the front passenger side, not only that i did find a rubber moulding that wasnt properly installed. The factory needs to employ people who dont forget to tighten up STEERING components. This could have been a fatal accident waiting to happen. Needless to say the dealership paid for the rental for a day and didnt charge me a dime to fix my car.

If I were out for a new car, I would buy it again. Very good car in any sense. Had just a few glitches in these five years. The original Goodyear Eagle RS tires provided a smooth ride but started to slid and hydroplane too soon. The new TOYO tires make the Focus a beast with gentle heart.

I have experienced quite a few mechanical issues with this car and I would not buy another.

  • Great Car/Bad Brakes - 2001 Ford Focus

Great car, but watch out for the brakes especially the front brake pads that go quickly. Also the radio tend to be cheap. My wife and I both own 2001 Focus cars and have found that they both experience the same troubles at almost the same exact time. I have enjoyed this car, but hate the dealership and the service they provide.

  • Focus a Lemon...Last Ford for me! - 2001 Ford Focus

I bought a 2001 Ford Focus in 2003 after hitting 185k on my Escort. I thought it was a cute car with great gas mileage (which was important because I commuted 1 1/2 hrs to graduate school everyday). The brake pads and rotors had to be replaced 3 times (Im not a fast driver, Ive only replaced the brakes once in my 99 Subaru). A spring in the front rusted out and for some reason wasnt included in the recall. The trunk latch was recalled, but no Ford dealer has the part. To make matters worse, the car all of a sudden started stalling and slipping gears. Now it wont go up hills (great to have in New England!) or accelerate. The car is useless for city driving. This car is a LEMON!

  • Dont buy this year - 2001 Ford Focus

Since I got this car I have had to replace a fuel pump (recall but still stunk), and am now having to mess with my transmission. I dont know if it is just my car or all 2001 Focuses, but I hate it.

  • Great looking, fun car to drive! - 2001 Ford Focus

After reviewing and test driving several of the smaller cars, civic, neon, etc. we decided to purchase the ZTS Focus. We have been very pleased with all aspects of this car. The design, layout, and way this car drives made me an instant fan of Fords newer efforts. The interior ergonomics, materials, handling, and pleasantly refined Ztec twin cam motor has made the purchase one we have been quite pleased to have made.

This is absolutely the worst car I have ever purchased. The title says it all.

  • Its costing me now - 2001 Ford Focus

This was the first car I ever bought. I researched it and got a fairly decent deal. However Ive had a lot of mechanical problems with it. It was at the dealer for a week cause it wouldnt start. And more recently it hss taken to not starting and sporadically stalling. I took it to 1 dealer and they claimed the stalling was from a faulty fuel pump and fixed it under warranty. Two weeks later it was still stalling and I took it to another dealer, because I moved, and its been there for over a month and they have no clue whats wrong with it. A real mind boggler they said. Ive spent a fortune in rental and repairs and its still broken. All I can say is Im never buying Ford again!
