Overview & Reviews
The 1998 F-150 gets a 50th Anniversary decal affixed to the lower left corner of the windshield. Other changes include making the locking tailgate standard on XLT and Lariat trims, optional on XL and Standard models. Foglights become optional this year on all four-wheel-drive models except for the Lariat, which gets them standard. An STX package featuring 17-inch tires, aluminum wheels and color-keyed grille debuts as an option for the XLT 2WD. The Lariat receives a color-keyed steering column, leather-wrapped steering wheel and outside power signal mirrors. Silver Metallic paint replaces Silver Frost paint, and Light Denim Blue replaces Portofino Blue.
- Best-in-class interior styling, powerful engine choices, and great on-road handling make this one of our favorite full-size trucks. Does pretty well off-road, too.
- Exterior styling has too many swoops and dips for our liking. Hard-to-see fenders make parking this thing a chore.

A REAL truck!!!!! - 1998 Ford F-150
By Jasonmonroe - August 10 - 2:00 amI purchased this truck in late 2001 with 61K miles, and now its 8/02, and I only have 66K miles...so I dont drive much. But I can tell you its the best truck Ive ever had or seen. Tons of power (especially torque), the stereo sounds great, more room than anyone would ever need, quality built with awesome styling, and a super comfortable ride. Add a flowmaster exhaust system, and the sound of the 5.4L Triton really comes to life! Other full size trucks have their positive points, but Ill take my Ford anyday. You wouldn beat it! Quality is STILL job 1 at Ford.

Almost Perfect - 1998 Ford F-150
By Bill A - June 14 - 2:00 amBought this truck new, and now have about 82K miles on it. It Drives, and rides well, and is still tight after all these miles. I have the 4.6 with a 5 speed manual. The transmission needed main bearings at around 70K. This was the only problem Ive ever had with this truck, but it was expensive to fix. Gas mileage averages around 17mpg with a mix of highway and country road driving. There are no rattles, the steering is tight, the brakes are smooth, and the transmission shifts well. The build quality is very good, materials seem of high quality. This truck was screwed together in the Norfolk Va plant which is know for its assembly quality.

By fordcountry - June 11 - 2:00 amIve had rear brake problems since it was new. Since then Ive had the rear- end torn apart 3 times. Also the door cracks ~3inches above mirror. Finally I had a tie-rod break without any prior notice. (sealed socket)

Big Truck - Fun Truck - 1998 Ford F-150
By trace clawson - June 10 - 2:00 amIts a great truck to drive. Very comfortable. Ive got the 4.6 L engine- adequate power but excellent highway mileage 16-20 mpg depending on speed. This baby sits up high. Can be difficult for short people to climb in. The rear bench seat is fine for Children- Adults.. you dont want to be back there for more than an hour at a time. The rear bench seat sits in a very upright position. My only problem: one of the catalytic converters failed at 40000 miles... covered by warranty.

Great truck - 1998 Ford F-150
By chris0987 - April 19 - 2:00 amI had great experiences in it and it took me places where I wasnt able to go with any of my previous trucks. Towing my boat has been fun and the truck is been running great. Oil and filter change is the only maintenance this truck needs.

By Dan Stearns - April 16 - 2:00 amOrdered truck from fleet manager and took delivery two months later. Had a few paint flaws which were taken care of. In the four years Ive owned the vehicle the only mechanical problem was an air conditioning valve.

My First Ford Product - 1998 Ford F-150
By Ron Watson - March 19 - 2:00 amI bought this truck new in March ,1998. My first Ford product in over 30 years. What a delight! This truck has 65000 miles on it today, and other than oil changes, and filters (normal planned maintenance) I have only replaced the tires.

Nice looking truck but bad engines - 1998 Ford F-150
By Jvernon73 - March 16 - 8:18 amI like the looks of my Ford F-150 but Im experiencing what Ford calls piston slap and Ford would not do anything about it. I was told that the 97 -2000s with Windsor engines have some badly engineered pistons which causes them to slap against the cylinder walls when first started up. It sounds like the engine has a defective rod.
