Overview & Reviews
The 1998 F-150 gets a 50th Anniversary decal affixed to the lower left corner of the windshield. Other changes include making the locking tailgate standard on XLT and Lariat trims, optional on XL and Standard models. Foglights become optional this year on all four-wheel-drive models except for the Lariat, which gets them standard. An STX package featuring 17-inch tires, aluminum wheels and color-keyed grille debuts as an option for the XLT 2WD. The Lariat receives a color-keyed steering column, leather-wrapped steering wheel and outside power signal mirrors. Silver Metallic paint replaces Silver Frost paint, and Light Denim Blue replaces Portofino Blue.
- Best-in-class interior styling, powerful engine choices, and great on-road handling make this one of our favorite full-size trucks. Does pretty well off-road, too.
- Exterior styling has too many swoops and dips for our liking. Hard-to-see fenders make parking this thing a chore.

Ford F-150 = The most reliability ever!! - 1998 Ford F-150
By Fordlvr - February 11 - 2:00 amWe got this truck in february of 2002 and it is february 11 2004 and we have not had 1 problem except for the dual exhaust breaking, and thats it, the 4.6 V8 sounds awsome up in the 5,000ks and it rides smooth like a car, the 6 cd changer is a great amentity and the speakers are impossible to blow and sound great. the truck is at 114k now and runs like brand spanking new, if you see one of these trucks for sale and you need a truck, HERE you go, buy it.... X GM Man - 1998 Ford F-150
By Former GM owner - December 27 - 2:00 amWhat was I thinking? I grew up with the old man driving Fords, but after I left the house I switched to Chevy. After buying this 98 I realize what I was missing out on.Build and quality are FAR superior to anything with a bow tie or sheeps horn.Interior is night and day difference, and at 122k miles drives much tighter than my brothers 2001 Chevy with 65k miles.I would only go back to a GM truck becuase I am more familiar with the powertrains, but only because they needed a little of TLC for maintenance.I have the 4.6 with police engine(bought for state use originally),and think power is good.

Discouraged - 1998 Ford F-150
By Why me - December 18 - 2:00 amTires went at 35000, new brakes about the same time. U-joints replaced at 40000, and 10000 later the rear-end needed new gears and spline replacement. The backend feels like it is going to drop out during normal acceleration at stop lights. The rear window doesnt seal well and dust is a problem along with water. Not giving up the ghost yet...Thank God for the extended warranty.

After 5 years - 1998 Ford F-150
By carlwm - November 15 - 2:00 amThe only proble ever experienced was a minor adjustment in transmission shifting that was under warranty. Extremely solid, reliable, safe, vehicle. Drives even better when loaded. V6 has plenty of pep and torque. Unless towing a LARGE trailer, V6 is all that is needed. People who buy V8 waste money.

built ford tough! - 1998 Ford F-150
By bigboy - August 23 - 2:00 ami found everything i wanted with this truck. it has yet to have any repairs needed at 70000 miles-great reliability. i have, of course, done some performance improvements to it (headers, hi-flow cats, flowmasters, air intake), but they added to the reliability more than anything. i ahve a manual five speed with 4.6 v8-amazing gas mileage for a 4x4!! 14-16 mpg in city and 17-18 mpg on highway! towing and hauling is great, too-have trouble remembering its a 1/2 ton. this truck is truly built tough! ford tough!

1998 XLT F150 Ext. Cab w/ 3rd Door - 1998 Ford F-150
By T/R S - August 18 - 2:00 amIn November, 2003, our F-150 will be 5 years old. At first we had a problem with the sensor that tells whether a door is open/closed and above lights on/off. The F-150 was still under warranty, so they fixed it and it has never happened again. We have 120,000 miles on it and have never had any other problems, until 115,000 miles and the alterernator went out. It has been a tough truck and we haul big loads of pigs, and its still going strong. doesnt

Over 100,000, Still happy. - 1998 Ford F-150
By Lou44 - August 13 - 2:00 amMy over all experience with this vehicle has been a good one. Experienced a slight hesitation when traveling between 50 - 60 mph during 33,000 - 55,000 miles (right after warranty). Two dealers, two evaluations, perfomed one repair and problem went away by itself after 55,000 miles.
