This Year's Model Updates:

The 1998 F-150 gets a 50th Anniversary decal affixed to the lower left corner of the windshield. Other changes include making the locking tailgate standard on XLT and Lariat trims, optional on XL and Standard models. Foglights become optional this year on all four-wheel-drive models except for the Lariat, which gets them standard. An STX package featuring 17-inch tires, aluminum wheels and color-keyed grille debuts as an option for the XLT 2WD. The Lariat receives a color-keyed steering column, leather-wrapped steering wheel and outside power signal mirrors. Silver Metallic paint replaces Silver Frost paint, and Light Denim Blue replaces Portofino Blue.

Pros:
  • Best-in-class interior styling, powerful engine choices, and great on-road handling make this one of our favorite full-size trucks. Does pretty well off-road, too.
Cons:
  • Exterior styling has too many swoops and dips for our liking. Hard-to-see fenders make parking this thing a chore.

  • Great Truck! - 1998 Ford F-150

I have only had this truck a few weeks but I have always wanted an F150. This is one tight truck. 10 times better than the Dodge Ram, my last truck. 92,000 miles and just as tight as my fiancees 05 Pontiac. Third door is great! Fuel economy is a little poor but its a truck, get over it! 4.6L is still a very strong motor. I have no use for the 5.4L.

I love my truck because of the utility reliability and the looks. I have spent $420 in repairs in 6.5 years and 142k of use. A truck gives me the independence I like. I can move things without having to get any help. I am a pretty big guy and like the space. My family of 5 can fit in for short trips.

Factory Quality Rebuilt engine required after one year. Left windshield wiper refuses to clean window properly. Premature tie-rod repair. Lifter noise unless premium gas used.

This pickup has always been reliable, even in severely cold weather. I have had no problems with it. It still has no rattles, squeaks or wind noise. It runs smoothly and the automatic shifts well. The only improvement that could be made is to reduce the cabin noise level. This pickup is much quieter than my previous F150 but could be better.

I love this truck, and it loves me. I have driven 43,000 miles in this truck, (owned 2.5 years)and it has 111,000 at the moment, and all I have had to do was replace the front disc brake pads. This truck is relentless in making sure I am never stranded anywhere. I abuse the heck outta the poor thing, yet it takes it like a real truck should. The only problem I found is the paint is cracked, (sniff!) which seems to be a common problem with these trucks. But I still wax the heck outta it anyway.

  • Good Truck - 1998 Ford F-150

I had 1999 Chevrolet Z71. This truck is better all around. Rides better, more power, sits higher, etc. The only area it gives up ground to the Chevrolet is in off-road performance. That is mainly due to the rear locker that was standard equipment on the Chevy.

  • A Durn Good Truck - 1998 Ford F-150

I used this truck for towing my motorcycle trailer and for general all- around driving. It has been highly reliable and functional. I bought the smaller V-8 thinking it would get better mileage than the larger engine. It didnt and that was disappointing. A great around truck, but not good for large range commuting because of the mileage (about 13.5 MPG).

Ive owned this truck since it was a year and a half old, it had 30,500 miles on it when i bought it and have had only 2 occasions to ever have it in the shop for mechanical reasons other than routine maint. Im exceptionally pleased with this truck and would only hope that my next is as reliable and as good a truck.

The pickup is good on the highway we usually make road trips every year of about 4000 miles going and coming. Performance is decent but thats because it has 170,000 miles on the odometer. The pickup has only had minor problems, the biggest problem it has faced was the starter and the flywheel going bad but thats about it it Has been a very realiable and bad ass truck too drive.
