Overview & Reviews
The 1998 F-150 gets a 50th Anniversary decal affixed to the lower left corner of the windshield. Other changes include making the locking tailgate standard on XLT and Lariat trims, optional on XL and Standard models. Foglights become optional this year on all four-wheel-drive models except for the Lariat, which gets them standard. An STX package featuring 17-inch tires, aluminum wheels and color-keyed grille debuts as an option for the XLT 2WD. The Lariat receives a color-keyed steering column, leather-wrapped steering wheel and outside power signal mirrors. Silver Metallic paint replaces Silver Frost paint, and Light Denim Blue replaces Portofino Blue.
- Best-in-class interior styling, powerful engine choices, and great on-road handling make this one of our favorite full-size trucks. Does pretty well off-road, too.
- Exterior styling has too many swoops and dips for our liking. Hard-to-see fenders make parking this thing a chore.

F150 Lariat - 1998 Ford F-150
By gil - February 21 - 10:04 pmBought used. Have driven for 5 years and no major repairs not covered by warranty. Fuel economy not good but improved with K&N filter. Pull trailer with 2 ATVs and have no problem with 4.6. Paint still looks and shines like new constantly getting compliments and offers. Would definitely buy another Ford truck.

Ford Tough - 1998 Ford F-150
By aaron - January 26 - 4:01 pmThis isnt my first Ford truck, and Ive been very happy with them. I am a country boy and Im probably harder on my trucks than most people. This truck drives circles around my brothers Silverado out in the muddy fields, and I have had less repairs than he has. The only major repair has been a new clutch, which was my fault. I down graded from the 5.4 to the 4.6 this truck, and wish I had my 5.4 back. This is still a tough truck that is built solid.

Dont buy the 4.2 V6 - 1998 Ford F-150
By Pete - September 14 - 12:47 amI had this truck for 7 years and its been reliable until it reached 89,000 miles. Both head gaskets blew, but I found out this is a very common problem for 97-99 F150s with the 4.2 V6. STAY AWAY FROM THE 4.2!

165,000 Miles & Strong - 1998 Ford F-150
By Roxanne - August 28 - 10:33 pmMost reliable, trustworthy vehicle I have ever owned. As original owner and at 165K, I have had less than $1,000 in repairs in 8 years. Maintenance costs have been very reasonable. Mine is a manual with V6 -- gets about 17 mpg city & 20 mpg highway. Highly recommend this over the Silverado. Still has tight steering, great suspension, great ride, no rattles -- after many camping trips on unmaintained roads.

Best Vehicle Ive Owned - 1998 Ford F-150
By Sam - June 16 - 10:04 pmI bought this truck used it was four years old then, and now Ive had it four years. Ive done nothing but routine inspections and change the oil and filters regularly. It has never been to the shop for anything. Even the battery lasted eight years. Only 75k miles on it, but this truck has been nothing but a joy to own. I will never ever consider buying a Chevy again.

Top Quality - 1998 Ford F-150
By lespitz - April 30 - 1:23 amI have 175,000 miles on this truck and never had anything go wrong this is a top quality truck. I abuse the heck out of this truck driving daily from 4000 ft to 8000 ft in the mountains. The 4WD system gets abused 9 winter months of the year. An excellent truck.

My Red F150 - 1998 Ford F-150
By Hannable - March 12 - 9:08 pmBought just after 9/11. It has been a good truck. I used it as a commuter, until I got a job with a company vehicle. Now it is my around the weekend truck. Like the folding rear seat, like the 60/40 bench seat in the front.

Stone Cold Solid Truck - 1998 Ford F-150
By sclass_benz - February 1 - 3:18 pmThis a very solid, reliable vehicle. Always starts and runs strong, will never leave you stranded. Excellent 4WD capabilities. Very comfortable and a pleasure to drive for a truck. Supercab has more room than most cars.
