This Year's Model Updates:

The Sport Trac is an offshoot of the SUV. Basically, Ford has grafted a small cargo bed to the back of a heavily revised Ford Explorer.

Pros:
  • Unique combination of cargo bed and regular SUV, strong V6, optional cargo items improve versatility.

  • I Wouldnt Buy Another - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Price & Resale Value (I paid $30k & that didn’t include Leather, Tonneau Cover, Bed Extender, or Running Boards. The day I bought it, 1 yr ago, I had $6k in equity. Been trying to sell it – I’ll be lucky to break even.); Fuel Efficiency; Noisy (Sounds like the drs & windows are cracked w/ the wind blowing thru.); Sun Visors (Sun is always in my eyes no matter how I adjust them.) Overall, not worth the money I spent. Maybe the dealer I used ripped me off. Maybe Ford needs to improve upon this vehicle. Would I buy another? No way.

  • great suv/truck, but small problems - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

i have had my sporttrac for over 2 years (the first one sold at the dealership) i have had numerous small repairs that have had to be fixed, but do recommend the vehicle for purchase. unfortunately, my biggest problem is the brakes. i am on my 4th set of brakes at 71000 highway miles. im hoping that this time it is fixed.

Fun to drive, put a class III hitch an rent a trailer for big bulk jobs, handles towing with ease, nimble, fits in garage, 4wd a must. Overall interior appointments excellent when compared to Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, Dodge Dakota.

Overall a very dependable truck. Agree with postings on brakes going in short order. Also had a clutch slave cylinder go bad (under extended warranty). Other than that, no problems. Has never left me stranded. Exterior design still looks good after 4 years. Balance between crew cab and pickup capacity is perfect. Interior design on base model is very plain (yet functional), but what can you expect in a base model. Pickup bed is great for the hardware store/dump runs, but lacking when you go to get any 4x8s. Yes, this is a compromise, but an acceptable one when compared to cost of a crew cab full size pickup.

  • Good Lookin - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

We think our truck is a "looker". It is great to have a smaller truck with people space and cargo space. Few things can be improved upon, and that is the brakes go really fast and the door lock pinches if you have your arm resting on the edge when the truck is put in drive and the automatic door lock engages.

  • Luckier than Most? - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

I currently have 54,000 miles on my Sport Trac. At 53,000 I had to have the dust shield on the front brakes replaced. Had to have the bolt holding the drivers seat to the floor replaced shortly after I bought the vehicle. The squeeking brakes gets me a lot of unwanted attention -- but the dealer also says that cant be fixed. Just read about the 2 new recalls. I presume that most of you had your hood latch replaced with the first recall.

  • Ah, my sport trac, how I love it. - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

I love my Explorer Sport Trac. It is fun and easy to drive. The problem with most four door trucks with full sized back seats is that they are so darned long, they are hard to drive. I love my Explorer because it drives like an SUV, but I can haul stuff like a truck. I only have two complaints: 1.mine didnt come with a cover for the bed, so if it rains I have to put the stroller in the back seat, and 2.the gas mileage isnt that great.

  • Its.....all right. - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

This is a great truck/SUVcombo for the single person. When you add in two kids and two car seats, you run out of room very quickly.

I am the original owner of my Sport Trac. I have really enjoyed the versatility of the truck. I did have trouble with the belt sounding like crickets. After getting the tensioner pulley replaced the belt doesnt make the noises anymore.

My Sport Trac is very comfortable and fun to drive. Fuel Mileage is decent at 19 mpg average. Although it has ample pep, considering todays technology, Ford could improve performance and fuel economy just a wee bit better. Before I purchased this vehicle I was undecided between an SUV or pickup, but the Sport Trac has proven to be a nice mix of each. Would recommend! You get plenty of looks too.
