This Year's Model Updates:

The Sport Trac is an offshoot of the SUV. Basically, Ford has grafted a small cargo bed to the back of a heavily revised Ford Explorer.

Pros:
  • Unique combination of cargo bed and regular SUV, strong V6, optional cargo items improve versatility.

I purchased my Sport Trac used, it had 36,000 miles when i got it. It has over a hundred thousand now. I have had it for about 6 years and I love it.I have hauled everything I needed to haul on it.I have the roll down window, I just stick lumber right through the window if it is too long for the bed.I have had very little repair over the years and it still looks and runs great. I love the body style and it is a rugged little truck.I look forward to at least 6 more years with it.My truck is an automatic, this site did not give me the option to pick auto trans.

  • Good Vehicle - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

I have put 28,000 miles on this vehicle already, and it has not been in the shop for ANYTHING. I change the oil regularly with Amsoil (synthetic). It has been a lot of fun and I enjoy the flexability. The only drawback is that the bed is small. I like the fact that it has a plug in the bed of the truck and the rear window is a power window. Overall I am very happy with this vehicle.

  • Excellent Choice - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

The 2001 Sport Trac is amazing. Its smooth running v6 engine is quiet and powerful. The ride is very improved from the 2000 explorers, it rides more like a luxury car than a truck. Its fuel economy, all though not great, isnt bad at all (I average about 19 city, 22 hwy)its very comfortable and stylish. I reccomend it to any and everybody.

  • Not Bad - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Bought my sporttrac in June 2000 and like it more as the time goes by. Looks very sporty and still get accolades from acquaintances concering its style and functionality. I commute 100 miles daily and this vehicle can hang with the best of them. Im certiantly well represented driving my Sporttrac. I did have to put on a set of brake pads and turn the rotors at 55K miles. Visibility is poor when backing. Turning radius is rather large.

  • Not Sure What To Think - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Consumer Reports gave the Sport Trac a big thimbs down, ranking it one of the worst vehicles. I use to think there was something to their annual report, but I have 2nd thoughts now. I bought my Sport Trac in Dec. 00, a co-workers husband bought his 3 months later, a friend bought his that same month, and someone I talk with via work bought one this past summer. With the exception of me getting the Firestones replaced (all the others did not have the Firestones), neither of our vehicles have been returned to a dealership for anything (well the co-workers husband does use the dealership for routine service)

I think Ford made a mistake widening the body width after 2001. This car slides into parking spaces with ease, and the performance and ride is better than most. Currently have over 90,000 miles and cant find a better replacement. The utility of the open cargo area is the best thing since sliced bread, and the rear seat fold down is also handy. Long lumber can be transported by sliding down the electric rear window -- a really slick feature.

  • 2001 Best multi purpose vehicle - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

My friend said that I should submit my review on the Sport Trac. So, here it goes. Overall this is a very good truck. I dont know how most people drive, but here I get an average of 21.8 mpg highway and 18.6 city. In my eyes thats pretty good for any truck. That is in 2wd, which is what I drive it in most of the time. The 4wd comes in handy for Michigan winters! I am also impressed with the ride quality, performance and workmanship. Next time Im shopping for a new truck, Ill look at the Sport Trac again.

  • All I Can Ask - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

It amazes me how many questions and stares I still get when the roads are full of the Sport Tracs. I could not ask of more from a vehicle this size. It carries 5 and their luggage in comfort on vacation, it hauls dirt/lumber/plants/etc. and washes clean without scratches, it carries a trailer loaded with 4000 lbs of trees 50 miles without straining, and it commutes to work getting about 20mpg. Must admit, Ive been very happy with this vehicle of choice.

  • what more could i want? - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

I did not buy this as a "performance" vehicle, and with the versatility of the truck-suv-touring car, I can not fault it at all. Love the ride and comfort on long 500 mile + trips, the fuel milage is better than my better halfs Liberty. The four wheel drive works very well, brakes could use an upgrade. There are many aftermarket items to sport it up, michelin tires make all the difference over the original goodyears. Needed new ball joints after 20,000 miles, original ones not sealed properly.
