  • Its Falling Apart - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Just came from the dealership and it needs new ball joints and seals at 55K highway miles. Estimated cost = $600. Dealer said it was a normal "wear" item. Already had paint (black); 4WD control; oil pan; oil sending unit; and seat bolts replaced under warranty. Have not had trouble with brakes -- yet. Has been in the shop in the last 2 1/2 years more than my 7 previous GM trucks/SUVs were in the last 16 years. Will be my last Ford. I am not putting a dime in thise crate after reading what I may be in for in the near term. Doing research on a new vehicle right now.

I love the truck. It is my first truck so I wasnt ready for the extreme fuel consumption. It fits my needs perfectly however. I looked at all of the competetors and chose this truck. I am not one to purchase a vehicle on impulse. It performs all of the duties that one could ask of such a vehicle. It handles and rides in an acceptable manner for a vehicle of this type. ( If you want a Caddy buy one )The build quality is excellent when compared to other mass produced vehicles.

  • Fun to drive. No problems. Treats me well - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

I have only owned mine for a few months, but going from a 95 Ranger to this, is great. It runs great, never had any problem, had to replace rear main seal, and just got new brakes all around. It treats me well and looks awesome on the road. I love the versatility it has, I can haul 5 people and lots of stuff in the bed. If you dont have one, get the bed extender, its great and gives you the extra space you need. I just moved and carried tons of furniture in it. I love this truck!

Always runs well, designed with ordinary maint (brakes, oil, etc.) in mind. Very simple to work on. Fun for offroading, but fairly low clearance. Several safety recalls, but no problems under warranty.

A new car to me..I soon discovered the problem Black 2001 Ford SUVs/trucks can have with paint Someone else wrote about this here too. The surfaces are "crowfooting" or "crazing" like old pottery. Hood, fenders and roof! Ford customerservice said theyll cover cost.Whew! Dealership agreed to paint. Said there was anotherin the shop right then.Gonna take 7-10 days but will give loaner. Its a hassle but Fords standing behind it without argument. Luckily, its still under warranty--one more month!

  • Good Design-Marginal Quality - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

A intermitent rattle around the pasenger door has never been found. Ford engineer just denied hearing the rattle, so now we people ask what the rattle is I tell them that there is no rattle. The brakes are horrible, rotors warp at 10,000 miles, at 32K I am having up graded rotors & a third set of pad installed. I understand that this is a problem Ford has been having but the dealer / Ford, in the true form is denying any problem. I love the design & functionally of the vehical, just wish the quality was there.

It will be going on 8 years since we have bought our truck used from a ford dealer. It was a year or two old. Since then it has been a pretty great companion. The only Problems are fuel economy, Braking System and Steering. The brakes have to be replaced or fixed often, the fuel economy is 14mpg, and the steering can get shaky meaning that you have to replace the control arms. Other then that its been a companion. Only a few years ago i found out that t was loaded with options. All i dont have is the moonroof and leather i think. Came with towing package, all exterior option, 6 disc changer, automatic tranny. Good truck. Repairs have never exceed 500 dollars when u DIY

  • No Problems At All - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Have owned this since it first came out. Have camped, hauled, went out on the town with it. Always gets stares from people and many questions. 3-5K miles between regular oil changes and normal rotations and mtce. Good brake wear, good tire wear, no squeaks, noises or rattles. 4WD works in snow and mud very well.

During summer enjoy rolling rear window down, open sun roof, feels very open. Negative is poor gas mileage. Have over 90,000 miles on it; had to replace A/C & front end parts. When in 2WD in rain or snow it gets pretty scary without weight. 4WD has a ghost, turns on and off by itself. Nice looking truck though. Bought 100,000 mile warranty; havent spent much on repairs because of that.
