This Year's Model Updates:

The Sport Trac is an offshoot of the SUV. Basically, Ford has grafted a small cargo bed to the back of a heavily revised Ford Explorer.

Pros:
  • Unique combination of cargo bed and regular SUV, strong V6, optional cargo items improve versatility.

  • Could be much better!! - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

When driving the Sports Trac around town I had noticed a squeeking sound when stopping but did not think of it as a problem. But about 1000 miles later I found out i had no pad or rotor left in the front disc brakes. Also during Highway driving i had to listen to a annoying wissling sound comming from the drivers side and passengers side windows. But over all the truck is fine just need to have better fuel mileage and fix the brake and wind noise problem!!

  • Ford should recall Sport Tracs - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Only complaint on the interior is the lumbar support on the drivers seat. Love the floor (no carpet), plenty of room, lots of adjustability. The exterior is great. Fuel mileage has been as expected (15 city, 19 highway). Good power. Rides like a truck, but it is a truck. Mechanically, Ford should issue a recall for brake problems. At 70,000 miles, its on its 4th set of brakes and 2nd set of rotors. Our Honda just had brakes for the 1st time at over 100,000 miles. We dont drive off-road, weve had no accidents, and we dont tow anything. We dont ride brakes, and we dont slam on them. This is clearly a Ford problem.

This vehicle was purchased to tow small trailers and it performs fine. Gas mileage is not acceptable as it is well below the advertised sticker quote. Workmanship is poor. Have had problems from paint and loose body parts to major mechanical problems. All were promptly taken care of by the dealer, but some are reoccurring and the vehicle is no longer under warranty.

  • Not that bad - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

No matter how I drive, I always get 15.6 to 16 MPG. Some times brakes makes noise (The dealer cannt help), A strange noise on my side windows (Dont know where its coming from). Anyway other then those probems, its not bad.

  • 2001 Overall A Disappointment - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

I purchased the truck with approximately 20,000 miles on it. The power rear window was a selling feature to me along with the looks and versatility of a SUV/truck. The ride is rough but after all its a truck so that is ok. The disappointing features are as follows; paint bubbling up and popping off the hood at 35,000 miles, Ford did pay for the repaint though. Lower Ball joints at 50,000 miles (told normal wear), horrible gas mileage (15 mpg mixed driving, 16-17 on highway), moisture in the headlights, annoying timing chain slap noise, slow/low torque motor and now transmission problems (which I was told is common). My 91 Explorer was bulletproof for 175K miles, doubt this one will make that.

  • Maintenance Nightmare - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac
    By -

You name it. It had to be fixed. Leaks transmission fluid like a sive. Major transmission problems. Complete replacement at 5,000 miles, pan gasket replaced too many times to count, major transmission repair ($2,000) at 75,000. ABS sensor failure - warrany, windshield replacement - warranty, plus a ton of other stuff. Worst truck Ive owned. Would not buy again.

  • Wish I owned stock in ford parts dept. - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Before 53,000 I had front axle seals, brakes and rotors, iap sensor, oxygen sensor, intake manifold gaskets, transfer case, power steering pump, and lower balljoints replaced. All of which the dealership said was normal. Granted this is the same dealership who recommended this vehicle for ease of maintenance.I am currently getting ready to trade it off as the dealership has offered to give an exceptional deal after showing them my full maintenance list.

  • Needs improvement - 2001 Ford Explorer Sport Trac

At 35,000 miles this vehicle has had the wheel bearings, and u-joints replaced three times. A new waterpump at 30,000 miles, brakes at 27,000 miles. Brakes at two days old squeak continuously - dealer cant do anything about it and suspension is very loose. Great design, but lacks in performance. All these issues are leading me to trade in for better European or Japanese imports.

Purchased with 75 mi on it, now at 160000. Bought Gold Warranty, will never purchase again, it covered nothing. Transmission came "unsealed" at 16k mi, said it was normal wear and tear. Continued transmission issues, gaskets come unsealed often and the electrical issues are huge. Windows wont roll up and down, door locks wont work, even manually (can only get in through passenger manual key lock). Constant repairs.

It will be a year in June 2008 since I bought it. Have had trouble with bad vibration in the whole truck, in the steering, and front end. Mechanic said the owners of the truck who had purchased it new had under the new warranty to get it fixed. The power steering pump has to be replaced with a bigger valve in it along with some other things concerning the pump. This is what is causing the vibration. Could cost me at least $1000 to fix it. Not a happy camper.
