This Year's Model Updates:

Ford's replacement for the aging Bronco is the all-new Expedition. Based on the 1997 F-150 platform, this full-size sport-utility vehicle is poised to do battle with the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon.

Pros:
  • Great big truck that can seat up to nine passengers and still fit inside a regular garage. Interior ergonomics are outstanding, and a nice standard equipment list make it competitive with other full-size utes.
Cons:
  • Engine could use a bit more oomph
  • Upshifts are rather abrupt and downshifts should happen a bit quicker.
  • Even the optional 5.4-liter has difficulty accelerating beyond speeds of 70 mph. The transmission could also use some refinement

  • The Ultimate Grocery Getter!! - 1997 Ford Expedition

I love my Expedition! I have three kids and really appreciate the roomy interior. I have had to put 3 car seats across the second row seat. There was plenty of room! I also dont have any problems fitting my double stroller, diaper bags, sports equipment, etc. in the back. I will never go back to a sedan again!!

  • Very Satisfied - 1997 Ford Expedition

We bought this vehicle new and have been very satisfied. We travel quite a bit (with 2 kids) and it is very comfortable on long trips. Weve used it to tow trailers and several occasions and had no problems. Only complaint is that the power door locks would quit working periodically. After trying to get Ford to fix them several times, I gave up and just started buying boxfuls of fuses and replace the fuse when the locks go out. No big deal. Only work done was brakes, tires and regular maintenace for > 100,000 miles

This car is soo much fun....I am a 16 year old who just loves my Expedition...I have the 5.4 L....that car can really take off...The only bummer is when you have 4x4 like my car the gas mileage isnt very good. Especially if you like to drive you car hard and fast. Well leather is crucial for important and it just adds that much the the comfort of the ride.

  • Engine Trouble - 1997 Ford Expedition

After spending $1,500 on three engine repairs before 90k miles, I am not happy with the reliablility of this vehicle.

  • Used but not abused - 1997 Ford Expedition

I bought my Expedition when it was nearly 4 years old and had 60K miles on it. I tow an 8,000lb trailer thats really a little too much for the truck, but I take it easy and the truck does fine. I got the hitch replaced as part of a recall and have regular maintenance done. The truck is a gem and Ill be disapointed to part with it when I finally do trade it in.

My Ford Expedition, bought new in 1997, has been an overall excellent car. The only negative is the somewhat squirrely steering and the fact that it once scared me silly when I thought it was going to roll over when I had to make a sudden sideways move at night on the highway.

  • Great 4WD - 1997 Ford Expedition

Almost has 100K and Ive only had to replace the Alternator. Still have original battery. Also, I just did the 100K service, sprark plugs were pretty bad, it took me more than four hours to change. I would highly recommend this vehicle to any one looking at one.

  • Sturdy truck for travelling back roads - 1997 Ford Expedition
    By -

This car has been several thousand miles into Mexicos highways and back roads and has never given me a problem. If you can stomach the gas mileage and you need a 4WD and/or big car, I highly recommend it. Another word of caution. It can be intimidating in tight corners and parking in major cities. But once you know your truck youll be fine almost anywhere.

factory tires lasted 28000 miles. Check engine light at 32K miles, had to replace transmission sensor pack ($350) although testing indicated nothing wrong with transmission. Check engine light again at 37K .... test indicates "smoke tube" needs replacing.
