Overview & Reviews
Ford's entry-level car gets new colors, new interior fabrics and revised options. An AM/FM stereo with cassette is now standard on the Escort SE. An interior trunk release is now standard on all models. The sedans and wagon get all-door remote keyless entry added to their standard equipment lists. An integrated child seat is no longer available.
- Economical, loaded with features, and frugal at the gas pump. ZX2 coupe offers surprising performance.
- Sedan and wagon are not too pretty, ZX2 is downright funky.

Excellent Commuter Car - 1999 Ford Escort
By scortracer - April 18 - 1:32 pmJust got this car not too long ago but it has been in the family for about 3 years. I dont really have to do anything with it besides change the fluids and get new brakes ... just normal wear and tear. The car has about 78K on it and I expect another 100K more at least. The tranny sometimes shifts rough and it idles shaky but I heard those are normal Escort traits. It gets great gas mileage and is quite comfortable to ride in and also handles a lot better than most other small cars. I had a 96 Escort and this generation seems worlds better. I dont know why people are running out and getting Japanese cars, Id take my little Scort over a Corolla or Civic any day. The build quality is great.

Ford Zx2 is a good practical car. - 1999 Ford Escort
By Yanno - April 14 - 10:00 amIf given the choice between this and a Focus or Honda again I would still choose the Zx2. The car is very fun to drive, work on, its very quick and outruns most cars on the road including some V8s yet still if babied I can get 37 miles the gallon and carry a lot of cargo. Its always been reliable and multi-functional. I went from an SUV to this and will never go back. Truly can not get a car this fast, this practical for this amount of money. Quite possibly one of Fords best cars. If this was in Europe or the UK the raving would never cease.

The Little Car that Could... - 1999 Ford Escort
By Hbgguppy - March 22 - 2:13 amI bought my Escort in a pinch. I had just bought my first house and very quickly realized the expenses of home ownership. I traded in my Ford Expedition and bought my Escort, cutting my car payment in half. Having owned SUVs for years and years, I wanted another "full cabin on frame" vehicle. Nothing car be more frustrating than trying to wedge a book shelf in the back of a sedan in the IKEA parking lot. I soon fell in love with the "little car that could". 4 years later and Im still attached to "Fred" as hes now known. I particularly enjoy the visibility while parallel parking and making fast lane changes during rush hour traffic. Hes been a darn good car to me.

By Blair - February 1 - 2:30 pmThis was my first car that I bought. I really like it but seem to always have a problem with it. It has always gotten me from here to there.

Mediocrity at its best - 1999 Ford Escort
By Kuri - January 3 - 3:13 amBought my 99 Escort with 24k on it, thinking it was a good buy. Less than a month later I had bad vibrations in the car during idle. Had to rip out and replace the motor mounts, a problem that Ive read other people having online. Horrible console design, cup holders wont hold anything bigger than a 20 ounce cup. Bad acceleration and Im already having transmission problems thanks to it. For some reason gas mileage plummets with city driving from 30-35 mpg to about 25 or so. I like small cars so this is actually a bit big for me Id have preferred a ZX2 if anything. Back seat has no room for comfort. My issues with the exterior looks were solved with a body kit. Speakers didnt even survive 2 months.

So far, so good! - 1999 Ford Escort
By Dover ZX2 - December 27 - 10:53 pmSporty, quick car thats fun to drive! I bought my ZX2 with 30,000 miles in 2001 for $8K. I have put 90,000 more miles on it in 4 years. This car gets great gas mileage on the highway my best was 39 mpg. Some gripes: tends to drift on concrete pavement. Engine is loud over 70 mph. I agree with a few reviewers, this car has a mind of its own. My cruise control will stop working randomly. The horn went off by itself I had to pull the fuse! I bought an extended warranty which was a great investment it covered the cost of replacing the entire AC system, alternator, radio/cassette, tie rod, and horn.

Good Little Car - 1999 Ford Escort
By matt - December 23 - 1:20 amWe bought this car with only 61K. It needed nothing from the dealer and currently needsnothing besides brakes. Its been a solid and reliable car. Acceleration is only adequate and it idles quite rough. The interior is comfortable although theres not a lot of room in back. Fuel economy is definitely a plus.

Wicked Little Ride! - 1999 Ford Escort
By anubisankh1031 - October 23 - 2:50 pmMine has 58,500 miles. Been hearing some squeaks. Strange vibration near the drivers side front when I turn the wheel all the way to the left. Transmission has a "hop" in it when starting from stand-still off the line. Had a 92 Escort LX and at 57K it did the same thing. MAINTAIN YOUR TRANSMISSION! Also, rotate tires & maintenance alignment regularly or it will PULL SHARP to one side because it is so light. Hydroplanes when wet out. Put weight in trunk to prevent this during winter. Engine run better on premium grade fuels. Fuel injectors cause drag if you use cheap fuel over time. Other than those typical high-mileage issues -- its fast, fuel-economical, and stylish.

Not a fun car - 1999 Ford Escort
By Bob995 - September 12 - 10:00 amI have a 99 Escort SE and I hate it. It is very uncomfortable. It is so slow I have trouble pulling into freeway traffic. Forget about anyone but very small children riding in the back seat for more than a couple minutes.
